How to draw from a reference photo:
I usually use references as super basic guidelines for my drawings, but when I feel like I need to practice my proportions, draping, whatever, I like to try to use references more accurately like this. It usually doesnāt turn out exactly how I want but I find that it helps me improve my skills. This is going to be a long post but hopefully it helps some of you. By the way, Iām not saying thereās a correct way to draw or anything, this is just how I do thingsā¦
First, I do some really basic blocking. (I use MediBang for all my drawings and my phone, no stylus). I donāt have a specific brush for this, but for this I just used pen and then Iāll reduce this before drawing another layer on top of basic line art.
This next layer always makes me want to give up because it never looks good enough to me but itās just meant to add some structure before I do my final line art. For this layer and the next I use the pen (sharp) tool at around 77% because itās more forgiving than the normal pen tool and I just like how it makes my lines look.
Now I do my final line art, usually in a color that goes with the drawing. I shouldāve chosen more of a red shade for this but it still worked out okay. Most of the time I use black and overlay it later but Iām trying to change some things around. I usually copy this layer so it strengthens my lines a bit, which just looks better in the final drawing.
Next Iāll create a closed palette based off of colors from the reference itself, itās easier than guessing and helps me remain more consistent. I start off with base colors and go in with the shading later. Usually Iāll do all of the skin tone first, then hair, then clothing, but for this I decided to lay down all base colors before I started shading.
Next I add shading. For this I use the watercolor (wet) brush at a really high(?) opacity (more sheer). I usually do shading on a separate layer Incase it comes off too strong. Iāll start off laying down some base colors, stronger at first, and then blend them out with the colors around them.
Next for some finishing touches, I copy the line art layer again and hide it and then overlay the original over the drawing. Usually this alone does not provide enough structure so Iāll unhide the normal copied layer and just reduce it so itās about 50%.
I hope this all made sense and helped some of you guys out! Sorry this was so long lol. If any of you are curious about certain steps or want to see another tutorial (?) let me know!

How do you draw doors and windows and glass man i am lost
Not too proud of this but I wanted to try different shading techniques (12/24/18)
Some art from the beginning of this year to the end (I think? I kind of guessed the dates??) that drawing of maja in the magicianās realm is still the best thing Iāve ever done. I think mostly I just got better at adding deapth and shading. I also started overlaying my lineart after I finished shading which made a world of difference.
Ignore this horrible drawing of Muriel lmao it doesnāt even look like him and I was not about to draw all of the chains and shit but whatever, I wanted to make a new apprentice character for the other routes because I canāt really see Maja with anyone except the main three (and maybe Portia). I donāt even have a name for her⦠maybe Elodie? Idk.
aragorn and legolas but theyre tired camp counselors
A porn bot literally just followed me (of course I blocked like always lmao) but my old art blog was muted? Tumblr really isnāt doing their job here come on. Is anyone even responding to all of the complaints from users on this site?

A very messy portrait I did today.
I found this really amazing photo on Pinterest and I really wanted to paint it but Iām not the best painter and skin tones are a huge weakness for me. When I started this it was the complete wrong skin tone and I was about to give up but instead I decided to embrace it and try to make a semi finished piece. It still needs some touch ups but Iām pretty happy with it. I keep over analyzing it and finding the smallest flaws but itās all part of my journey to improve as an artist so I thought Iād post here. If you guys have any painting tips Iād love to hear them.
