ADULT STUDIO ART WORKSHOP—HELEN FRANKENTHALER: GIVING UP ONE’S MARK

Albright-Knox art Gallery Saturday January 15, 2015 1:00-3:00pm

$22 for nonmembers $18 for members

This event begins with a guided tour of Helen Frankenthaler's exhibition of her 17 works from the 1960's and 1970's in which she transitions from oil to acrylic paint. Following the tour participants will create a landscape that is inspired by Frankenthaler's works. They will use a "wet on wet technique" that "will allow participants to experience a similar process to that of the artist."

Verbal Description Sensory Tour at Albright-Knox Art Gallery

Thusday January 15, 2015 2:00-4:00pm

This free event is designed for blind or partially sighted adults who wish to experience special exhibitions at the gallery. This tour provides an in-depth tour that gives a verbal description and allows for those attending to possibly feel the works. Those attending are able to experience select and special exhibitions with senses other than their sight.

Those wishing to attend are asked to register prior to the event because of limited enrollment.

Art and Yoga for Fun and Relaxation at Albright-Knox Art Gallery

A hour long class of a connection between yoga and art led by certified yoga instructor Leanna Oldenbrook. The class begins with an overview of the artwork that the class will view during their session. Yoga mats and music for the class is provided but participants are asked to dress comfortably.

John Oliver: UB Distingished speakers

This event will take place on November 18th, at 8pm in the UB Noth Alumni Arena. John Oliver is a comedian, political scientist and host of HBO's"Last Week Tonight." He is the undergraduate choice distingushed speaker.

For over 30 years UB has invited speakers to come to the uniersity to open debates and discussion on important foreign and domestic issues. The central belief of these programs are to bring the community closer and inspire students to become knowledgeable and engaged as citizens.

Good Night, And Good Luck Screening

A screening of the movie Good Night, And Good Luck will take place November 5 2014 at the Burchfield Penny Art Center's Peter and Elizabeth C. Tower Auditorium from 7 to 9 pm. This movie shows the fight between CBS newsman Edward R. Murrow, Senator Joesph McCarthy, and the "CBS Hierarchy." The movie takes place during the early 1950s when the country was being influenced by Senator McCarthy's attacks on the American people that we now call McCarthyism. The senator would have citizens put on trial for any communist connection of their past of the past of those who they know.

After this movie Jim Heaney and another fellow journalist will discuss Morrows actions and the legacy that he left for our country.

Alton Brown Live- The Edible Inevitable Tour

The television host Alton Brown will be bringing his act, that he has been preparing for close to a decade, to Buffalo this fall. Brown has written his own musical acts that will take a comedic look at food.This will be an interactive show that includes comedy, live music, puppetry, and "extreme food experimentation." The show takes place on November 16th at 7:30pm in the Universtity of Buffalo Center for the Arts Main stage Theatre.

Festival of Architecture

The Buffalo Architecture Foundation will be holding a weeklong celebration (September 29th- October 4th) for the World Architecture day, on October 6th. This celebration will foucus on the architecture in Buffalo and how it influences our daily lives. This festical will take place in various locations around the city.

The Buffalo Arcitecutre Foundation, along with many other local organizations, will provide educational programs, community activities, lectures and discussions, which will celebrate Buffalo's beautiful architecture. The BAF will be hosting fundraisers to support their future programs as well. From this weeklong festival the BAF hopes to enocurage other organizations to take part in this celebration and for those living in or around the city to learn more about the design and culture surrounding Buffalo.

Stonehenge

The Stonehenge is possibly one of the most famous prehistoric monuments, and is a timeless tourist location attracting visitors from all over the world. Located in Wiltshire, England it was completed about 3500 years ago after what historians and archaeologists predict took approximately 1500 years to complete. Made of 100 massive stones in a circular form it is believed that this site was once used as a ceremonial burial ground, but remains a mystery to this day over the actual meaning of its creation. One astronomer Gerald Hawkins thought that this structure could have been created as an astronomical calender, but this theory was disregarded even after it caused quite a bit of attention. Many historians do not understand how this massive structure could have been made in a time without modern technology or even the wheel.

Today the Stonehenge attracts nearly a million people each year and has undergone construction to prevent the stones from breaking (many have been set in concrete.)

Albright-Knox Art Gallery is hosting the special event Anselm Kiefer and Janne Siren: A Conversation on September 27th from 4:00 until 7:30 pm. General admission is $50 and Albright-Knox members will be charged $30 to get into the event. Anselm Kiefer will make a rare appearance in the country to discuss with Albright-Knox director Janne Siren his exhibit Beyond Landscape. This exhibit shows explores the connection between history, identity, and landscape through several of his major works including: der Morgenthau Plan (The Morgenthau Plan), die Milchstrasse (The Milky Way), and Memel, von der Etsch bis an den Belt (From the Maas to the Memel, from the Etsch to the Belt). These works show Kiefer's "career-long explorations of nationalism, identity, and cultural memory." Together the art works "invoke the politics of landscape—the precarious relationship between nature, history, and aesthetics."

After the conversation with Anselm Kiefer and director Janne Siren, there will be a reception and the book launch for the Beyond the Landscape catalog. The Buffalo Chamber Players will also be performing at this event.
