“No, I just think you have a soft spot for me,” she baited, fighting back a tiny, satisfied smile.

But it was mostly serious. She wanted to see if he would deny or admit it, and the curiosity she had for his answer grew exponentially. Her words triggered a shift within him, effectively derailing their conversation. Perhaps that was her intended effect when she saw his gaze glint with something predatory.

“Don’t think for one second I’m going soft on you.” One of his hands slid across her jaw, his grip firmly holding her in place. His eyes settled upon her mouth with obvious intention as he leaned in slightly.

A tingling warmth skittered across her skin with the simple touch, stealing her next breath. Conflict seized her mind once again in response to his proximity, and she knew there was only one outcome to the way they were rather intimately arranged.

He shrugs indifferently, accepting the photograph from her. Sakura nervously watches his face morph into one of confusion and bewilderment. “This is—”

“Us.” Anxiety pricks up her spine when she blurts out exactly what she’s been thinking for the past two hours. There is no mistaking what is captured as plain as day on that photograph of them dancing at the wedding reception: their gazes and smiles intimate, the faint blush on her cheeks, and the way he stares down at her like she is the most precious thing to exist. “You, Hatake Kakashi, are in love with me,” she accuses, stabbing his chest with a finger.

He catches her hand to give it a sweet kiss before tugging her into the circle of his arms. “And you are in love with me,” he rebukes easily, gesturing to the shy rendition of her face.

“So that settles it, we’re even.”

Summary: She existed as the reality of his atonement. Around him, her smiles were fewer, her joys similarly absent. The guilt that suffocated him begged a single question: how would he repent to the heart of someone he tried to kill… twice?

Excerpt:

Suffocating remorse pricked its way up his spine and constricted across his chest, suddenly making it hard to breathe. "Sakura… we can forego weapons," he conceded eventually. Sasuke turned away unthinkingly, intending to set the weapon aside. He made it all but a few steps before the hairs on the back of his neck rose in alarm. A charge of footfalls rushed him in an instant. Acting upon mere instinct, Sasuke spun around, blocking the kunai Sakura intently aimed for his throat.

The clash of metal on metal echoed piercingly, reverberating against the trees, leaves, the infinite blades of grass at their feet, and the swaying branches around them. She was so close . He could smell her—something floral and delicate. He could feel the ghost of her breath—warm and skin-prickling. He could see the severity etched into each plane of her face—resentment intense and patent, her eyes wild and fierce. In a match of strength, her weapon barely grazed his neck before Sakura fell back only to rush him again.

“Indeed, you have. Tell me again, Sakura.”

The woman blinked. “You, Sasuke, are an arrogant, egocentric man.”

Sasuke smirked, taking a hold of her hand. “And who exactly is dating this arrogant, egocentric man?”

Sakura blushed scarlet when he pressed a warm kiss to her knuckles. “The luckiest girl in Japan.”

“Exactly.”
