DJenks' confirmation that the 'Trust No-One' tattoo was intended to have been a new addition between s1 &s2 has me thinking about Ed's relationship to trust.

The impression I have of Ed is that he is a man who wants to trust. He trusts Izzy to be a competent first mate (even when he begins to openly defy him as s1 progresses), he trusts Calico Jack when he shows up out of the blue, and of course, he trusts Stede. His trust of Stede is particularly noteworthy because, unlike Izzy and CJ, Ed has no prior history with Stede. Yet right away, he hands over his weapons to him, even falling asleep next to the man who is still armed with his weapons.

At his core, Ed has a trusting soul, despite no doubt being given many reasons throughout his time as a pirate to trust no-one.

Then, of course, Ed's trust is betrayed - by Stede, yes (he says as much on the couch at Anne & Mary's - "I trusted you. I trusted us"). But also obviously by Izzy who brought the English navy down on his head. And if he can't trust Stede or Izzy, then who can he trust? No-one.

So now he's stuck in a situation where he's forced to live and work with one of the people who grossly violated his trust, while the other person he trusted so fully has vanished in the wind, with no explanation.

His ability to trust is so shattered at this point that he felt the need to tattoo those words into his skin. Because if he doesn't trust again, that trust can never be betrayed.
