The semestral break has arrived. While other students revelled in the idea of spending their leave vacationing in distant states and countries, Agnes usually treated the occasion with a more mundane view; it going to feel like just another weekend-- and an extremely long one at that. For once, though, being in school sounded far more exciting.
The young teen saw the familiar black sedan first before the woman who waved at her. Another assistant. An intern? Possibly. There was skepticism in Agnes' large, expressive eyes as she approached the lady. "Dad couldn't make it again, hm?" It was a dumb question; she admonished herself in her thoughts. Of course, he's busy as usual. She thought she would be accustomed to it by now, being accompanied by someone else in her father's stead. But a guardedness lingered that always prevented her from letting complacency take full hold.
"I've learned that being in school isn't always terrible. Sorry you had to come all the way here. Does Dad always have you run his..." She paused. A sadness snuck momentarily with the faint quiver of her lips before she cleared her throat. "His minor errands?" She furtively waved her hand, opting to keep her backpack and suitcase to herself. She deflected and downplayed her feelings. In fact, school was far more exciting which she found quite pleasantly rare, but that was something she felt was too much to share.
Even though she kept a straight face, May couldnβt help but feel bad for the teen. From her tone and word choice, it was evident that someone else instead of her father picking her up was the norm. Growing up, she couldnβt imagine someone other than her grandfather picking her up after school. It was their routine and going to the ice cream shop on Wednesdays (when they had a BOGO) was their little secret.
βI was actually kind of excited to get to leave the office for a while, so thereβs nothing to be sorry about,β she admitted as she started to lead the way to the car. βHis assistantβs out on maternity leave. The temp should be starting next Monday.β She didnβt really know much about her bossβs personal life, other than him having a daughter. He never came across as the type of person who would be open to sharing information beyond what was strictly necessary, so she never dared to ask.
βOh, trust me, youβre not a minor errand.β The comment had come across as self-deprecating, so May tried her best to turn it around with some humor. βUnless you were being funny because youβre under 18β¦β Her voice was soft and she donned a smile as she unlocked the trunk. βThat must be heavy, I can put it in the trunk for you.β Hands outstretched, offering to help Agnes with her things.

she has played this game many times before. they buy her a fancy dinner, they have some wine or another type of fancy drink that shows how much money or influence they have. after a few glasses, thatβs when they make the offer, tell her what they really want, because no one does this without wanting something. sheβs curious, intrigued even, about what a politician like @ladyintree could possibly want from her. a good search engine scrub? dig up dirt on an adversary? she has a feeling sheβs about to find out soon. βbottleβs empty, iβm ready to hear your pitch.β

She looked at @alfean directly as she dramatically rolled her eyes and let out an audible sigh. βYou canβt be serious. You really want me to work with this brick?β she said, gesturing at the computer on the desk that was meant to become hers. βThis doesnβt even have enough RAMβ¦ I can work with it, but Iβll need a small budget for upgrades. Howβs that?β

The drive to the academy had been peaceful. Not as peaceful as a good coding session, but driving with nice jams and tasty snacks was pretty cozy. The blurs of orange and browns as the road took her away from the city and deeper into the surrounding suburbs and small towns were beautiful and reminded her of the scenery back home in Tacoma. She hadnβt been to visit her family in two years now, but the thought was always there: going back home for a visit, or maybe staying and recapturing the joy of night-long coding sessions fueled by Monster and Top Ramen in her parentsβ basement.
She parked the car out front and then headed to the courtyard. May sat on one of the picnic tables, feet flat on the seat as she watched students leave the building accompanied by their guardians. Recognizing the teen from afar, May waved at her, and hopped off the table with ease. βHey,β she smiled. βYour dad sent me. He couldnβt make it, but that just means the drive back to your place will actually be fun, huh?β She stretched out her arm, offering to take some of Agnesβ belongings. βSo, did Nevermore teach you anything new?β

(rage meets ruin, scars meet salvation β and the noise never really stops)
πππππππ
βItβs like I canβt tell where the pain ends and I begin.β
βYou said you could fix me. Tell me β howβs that going so far?β
βEvery time I try to silence it, it screams louder.β
βDo you ever feel like youβre both the fire and the match?β
βI broke myself to feel something again.β
βThereβs comfort in the chaos β thatβs the only thing that ever made sense.β
βIf I let you see the real me, youβd run.β
βIβm not okay, but Iβve learned to make it look like I am.β
ππππ π
βYou said love was supposed to heal β so why does it still bleed?β
βIβd rather be haunted by your memory than forget your voice.β
βIf you loved me, why did you leave me with all this silence?β
βI kept your picture. Not because I want to, but because I canβt throw it away.β
βEvery time I close my eyes, I see the way you walked away.β
βYou buried me long before I stopped breathing.β
βDonβt promise to stay when youβve already started to fade.β
βI still taste goodbye on my tongue.β
ππππππππππππ
βYou talk about peace, but you thrive in destruction.β
βWe built this world on lies, and now weβre choking on the ashes.β
βYou think you can control the fire β but itβs already eating you alive.β
βYouβre no saint. Neither am I.β
βEvery time we fight, it feels more like home.β
βWeβre both too broken to walk away, and too proud to stay.β
βThe only thing keeping us alive is our hatred.β
βYou wanted a war β so here I am.β
πππππππππ (ππ. π & ππ)
βYou werenβt real, but I loved you like you were.β
βI made you out of loneliness, and now I canβt let you go.β
βYou exist only in my memory, and still, you wonβt leave me alone.β
βI could still see her in the corner of my mind β quiet, still, perfect.β
βI canβt remember where the dream ended and the obsession began.β
βYou never noticed me, but I built my world around you anyway.β
βEvery time I close my eyes, I feel her breath β even though sheβs gone.β
βYouβre the ghost that doesnβt know itβs haunting me.β
ππππ ππππππππ
βThe past has claws, and mine wonβt let go.β
βI thought time would dull it, but I still hear your voice in every quiet room.β
βI canβt tell if Iβm remembering or reliving it.β
βYou said weβd move on. You lied.β
βSome nights, I wish I could forget everything we ever were.β
βYou carved your name into my heart, and now it wonβt stop bleeding.β
βI keep walking through ghosts of us.β
βIf I could bury the past, Iβd still dig it up just to feel something.β
πππππππππ
βYou think Iβm the villain, but you never looked close enough.β
βForgiveness doesnβt mean Iβve forgotten.β
βYou call me unholy β maybe thatβs what you made me.β
βEvery time you prayed for my redemption, I fell deeper into sin.β
βYou canβt save me, but I like watching you try.β
βIβm not the person you once knew, and maybe thatβs for the best.β
βHeaven turned its back on me β so I built my own hell.β
βIf Iβm damned, at least I earned it.β
πππ πππ π π πππππ
βI canβt remember what peace feels like.β
βDonβt ask me to forgive you when youβre still bleeding me dry.β
βYou left scars where promises used to be.β
βI used to believe in us. Now I believe in nothing.β
βYou talk about moving on like itβs that easy.β
βEvery apology feels like a weapon.β
βYouβre the reason I donβt trust warmth anymore.β
βIf love was supposed to save us, why did it destroy me?β
ππππ πππ πππππ
βI canβt tell if Iβm alive or just pretending to be.β
βThe mirror doesnβt recognize me anymore.β
βEvery night, I wake up tasting iron and regret.β
βIf you could see whatβs inside me, youβd never come close again.β
βThereβs beauty in the breakdown, but itβs killing me slowly.β
βI bleed just to remind myself itβs real.β
βThey told me to breathe β I forgot how.β
βThe painβs familiar. I think I missed it.β
ππππ ππ
βI burned everything I touched, and Iβm still cold.β
βYou said I was dangerous β you were right.β
βI destroy what I love before it can destroy me.β
βEvery lie I told was to keep you safe from me.β
βYou smelled like smoke and forgiveness.β
βIβm tired of being your monster.β
βYou keep calling me back, even when Iβve turned to ash.β
βThereβs nothing left but the fire.β
