“Oh, Nigey, I wish you could see it,” she whispered, her eyes sparkling with the reflection of the stars. Everything was still, save for the grasshoppers and the comforting, low rumble of Nigel’s snores. “It’s so beautiful. The planets, the stars—Earth looks like a dream from a distance.”

Lizzie looked down at her lap, a small smile tugging at her lips. He looked so peaceful. It felt like forever since she’d seen him this relaxed. Between the missions and the constant work on the treehouse, he was always moving, always planning.

He hardly ever took a breath for himself, let alone a moment for the two of them.

“It’s quiet in space,” she murmured, leaning close to his ear. “No noise. No missions.” She leaned forward until their foreheads touched. “Just you and me. I wish I could take you there, Nigey. Show you my world as you’ve shown me yours.”

She looked up, her lenses caught the tail end of a shooting star.

“I wish…”
