mariah plopped down onto the sofa, keeping a comfortable distance from the uncomfortable stranger. “hey, are you watching this? toddlers and tiaras is on and i wanna feel better about myself.”
“Kinda,” Cody shrugged a little, not really minding if she wanted to watch something else. He was only half watching, and it wasn’t like he hadn’t seen this a million times. He passed her the remote with a small smile.Â
“That was him! Oh man, he isn’t such a bloody prick to whoever those presents were meant for.”
“That’s good. And rude customers don’t come here too often. I think you’ll like it here. Who’s your roomate?”
“I hope not, or he’ll need a lot more than a present to make up for it.” Cody scratched his cheek gently. “Um, Alex? And his daughter Lily. And James.”
“Whatever, aren’t you a little too old for disney anyways?” he asked instead.Â
Cody raised his eyebrows a little and looked over at him. “I guess there’s no age limit on being an ass.”
“You kidding?” Alex laughed and shook her head. “I bet it was the same guy. Next time we should tell him to wrap it himself. But you do like working here nevertheless, don’t you?”
“Probably was. Tall, loads of tattoos?” Cody smiled a little at her comment, nodding. “I like it, it’s pretty cute. Just don’t like the rude customers so much.”
“Good!” she answered with a nod. “I knew you’d have a good taste. I love Disney Classics but I’m not a fan of all this new stuff like Frozen and those TV shows, nah.”
Cody scrunched his nose up a little. “Don’t even get me started,” he murmured and shook his head. “I don’t like Frozen. With a passion. A lot of the new TV shows aren’t great either. I love the older ones more.”
“Da bist du ja- (There you are-),” Alex began as he walked into the room but stopped in his track when he saw Cody instead of his daughter Lilly sit on the sofa. At least he thought his name was Cody. “Oder nicht.. (Or not…) You don’t happen to be hiding a six year old under the sofa, do you?” he asked him.
Cody laughed softly at the man, nodding ever so slightly. He uncurled his legs and set his feet on the floor, pointing a sweater covered hand at the little girl hiding beneath the sofa.
Alex rolled her eyes and spiced her coffee with cinnamon after she’d added milk. “Oh Jesus, some people really need to calm down. One complained about the way I wrapped a present and had me re-do it. I was close to throwing it into his face.”
Cody rolled his eyes a little and sipped his hot chocolate. “That happened to me a couple of days ago. It’s kinda ridiculous.”
“Just Disney?” She raised her eyebrows, walked over to the couch and sat down in respectable distance. “There is good Disney and bad Disney and something in between but everybody likes at least some Disney… don’t you?”
“I love Disney,” Cody murmured, looking at the screen and then over at the girl. “It’s Peter Pan.”
“Was I the only one who had a bad day or were all the customers exceptionally rude today? I miss working with kids…” Alex complained whilst pouring coffee into a mug in the kitchen.
Cody took a sip of his hot chocolate and shrugged. “A lot of them were kinda rude, I don’t think it was just you. One guy almost threw a fit when I said we were out of copies of The Hunger Games.”
“Right, of course it was already on. You do realise there’s such a thing as a controller which you can use to change channels though right?” he said, shaking his head.Â
Cody wasn’t sure what this guys problem was. “But I didn’t want to change the channel...”
“TV night, huh?” Alex asked as she leaned into the living room with a smile having heard the sound from the kitchen. “Anything good?”
Cody smiled over at her. “Just Disney.”
Jesse was on his way to the kitchen when he caught sight of the TV and couldn’t help but raise his eyebrows. “Nice choice of movie”, he said, trying to keep himself from laughing. “A classic and all.”
Cody rolled his eyes slightly, not overly appreciate of the sarcasm. “It’s Disney,” Cody muttered, looking back over at the guy. “And I didn’t chose it, it was already on.”
Cody sat on the sofa, knees pulled up to his chest, eyes half-focused on the TV. He glanced down at his phone every so often, texting back before looking back at the movie. Cody smiled shyly at the people passing by, not sure if he was meant to befriend his new roommates or keep to himself.
