For centuries, the only way up to Meteora was by rope ladders and nets hoisted by winches.

When were the ropes replaced? Legend has it, **when God allowed them to break.** In the 1920s, steps were carved into the rock. This photograph was taken atop those very cliffs.

Cats have lived in these monasteries for centuries. They’re the ones protecting the centuries-old Byzantine manuscripts and provisions from mice and rodents.

The anachronism in the painting is intense since the painter has not depicted them with the equipment and the fighting style of the Bronze Age, but with equipment and fighting style of the 15th century (and older). Achilles wears a scaly chest or a chest with plates, while Hector wears chain armor. It is interesting that Achilles does not employ the Western way of fighting with a pole where the pole is under the armpit, but with the old Greco-Roman way where the pole was at the height of the ribs. This is very interesting because in the 15th century AD the Western way had prevailed while here the ancient one is presented. It is worth noting that the defense of Hector, who holds the pole with both hands and deflects Achilles' attack, is the Byzantine way of fighting with a pole and is called "Roman deflection" (or sometimes Syriac) and is recorded in a Mamluk manual of Armaments which was written in Arabic by a Greek deserter.

It is hard to read those old writing styles so I can only discern for sure the names and the ending phrase which is "λαμπερού αχιλέως" (=of brilliant / illustrious Achilles).
