TBHK: Nene’s Connection to the No. 8

The number 8 has been associated with Nene on multiple occasions. This has been connected to her in her name, which, in Japanese is 八尋寧々 and the kanji for 8, being ‘八’.

This is one of the ways the number eight is associated with Nene, it has also been connected to her in the chapter 28 cover art; not only does the chapter number have an eight in it, the number is represented several times in the cover art itself. For example, we see that the flowers on the top are in fours, then if we add that together there is eight flowers all together. On the board game, Hanako is the eighth and last stop that Nene needs to make. Additionally, on the dice one of them has the number eight on it, there is also a seven on it which represents Hanako as he’s the seventh of the seven mysteries and because he’s at the last stop as her goal was to see Hanako. The last association to her in this art is the other dice, if we count all the dots together it adds up to eight - so, in total, there is four connections to her.

In the anime opening called ‘No. 7’, one of the lyrics states that, “Is it the first? The eighth? Wait, there’s no eighth” can imply that there could potentially be an eighth school mystery.

Knowing that the number eight is connected to Nene, it does suggest that it could be her; for example, in chapter 73 she asks that, “You mean... he could turn back time... and get Aoi and Hanako-Kun back...!?”, which can imply that Kako himself can turn back time but with Akane’s reply it’s somewhat uncertain to whether he’d potentially do that. Though, if Kako does reverse time it does imply that since it will go back ‘before the sleepover’ then it’s most likely that the lifespan swap will be reversed as well, thus Nene’s lifespan will be what it was before the severance - this could all be quite likely, to an extent but I am unsure of this.

In the Kamome Monster Nursery AU, egg 8 was shown to be Nene and she was assigned to Researcher T. She is presented to be a monster, along with egg 3 and egg M - as they’re monsters, it implies that they’re all supernaturals here; egg 3 being Sousuke, school mystery No. 3 and egg M being one of the Mokke. Both of them are supernaturals and are not of the living, contrasting to Nene as she is a human and is one of the living. Though, her egg was not the first letter of her name, N, but the number 8 instead just like Sousuke’s as his one is the same number as his seat as one of the seven mysteries and this can foreshadow that Nene may possibly become one of the school mysteries herself - specifically No. 8 because that would end up being her seat number.

Overall, the number eight has been connected to Nene on multiple occasions and even foreshadowing the potential of her becoming one of the school mysteries herself. Though, I think this could all be quite likely.
