Fantasy Island (ATEEZ Pick Your Path)

Puffy pink clouds like cotton candy floated into your vision, materializing out portholes serving as your office windows until you couldn’t see any of the sky past them. You knew their cool, fluffy texture would be covering the entirety of your pirate ship, floating its way through the glorious morning sky towards your destination, the destination you’d been searching your entire life for: Fantasy Island.

Outside on deck, your crew sailed the ship on through the morning, maneuvering their way effortlessly through the morning sunrise, the pink clouds turning an orange-y magenta as the sun rose. The crew's voices carried into your office, singing merry tunes of the sea and sky. Inside, the mood was less whimsical.

You drummed your fingers thoughtfully against a large map spread along the length on your large oak desk. The map's curling, crinkly paper was inked with the known regions of the island, which wasn’t much. You’d spent your entire life, pillaging the skies and seas with your loyal crew, hearing drunken tales of old pirates and sailors, crafting the legend of Fantasy Island.

The Island was said to be magic, each region rich with its own special kinds of magical creatures and treasures. Gemstones, gold, dreams, and wishes; any sort of bounty that could be thought of, any sort of booty a pirate could fathom in their wildest dreams, could be found on the island. And for so long, it had all been some old sailor’s tale, until it wasn’t. Until you and your crew had followed the legends of the island until you’d ridden all the way into the stars; until the island was soon to be materializing right underneath your very boots.

The map’s surface had been crinkled from tirelessly long nights pouring over the facts of its contents locations. There was a long gouge in its left side, where you’d thrown your silver dagger in a fit of rage when the island seemed to be a hopeless destination.

Now, an old bronze compass swirled on top of the inked paper, pointing towards true north as you tilted it one way, then the other. You were debating the final destination in your mind: what region you and your crew should set down ship.

Lined up at the top of the large map, the main objects of your undivided attention were posed, sentinels of your internal debate. For each region, gathered over time from an entire life’s worth of legends, was known to produce a different sort of bounty.

The tiny gems lined up on your map, the most beautiful stones and jewels you’d ever seen in your life, were your life’s work: tiny flecks and shards collected over the years, passed from sailor and stolen from pirate. The jewel shards had exchanged hands so many times, their true owners were all long dead. But you’d taken it upon yourself to find these jewels, to prove their place of origin was real, and then to find the bounty that it would offer up to you.

There was a sliver of a vibrant gold coin, a fleck of opal so small it could rest under a fingernail, but was so vibrant its glow, every shade known in the rainbow, was cast around your office room. Each tiny shard and sliver of gem and treasure you’d stolen and pillaged over your life, each coming from a different region on the island.

And now, you needed to choose. You needed to pick a gem, pick a prize. You had to choose which of the eight known regions on the island you would fly to. Your first mate would be coming to you soon to find out the crew’s final destination, and what prize they would be able to fill their pockets with.

You glanced at the line of gems and treasures on the top of the map. With a shaking hand, you took a deep breath and reached for the shard of…

Mermaid Lagoon

“A pearl that is supposed to do what?” Yunho gasped, flicking a large, iridescent green frond leaf out of his face. He was clomping behind you through the copse of thick vegetation, the sound of rushing waterfalls beckoning you closer and closer in the distance. A bird cawed overhead; the pink sky beamed down on you from above as you and Yunho continued your trek.

“Cures illness. If we’re able to catch one of the mermaids in the lagoon, she’s supposed to give us her pearl,” you called back to him as you checked your compass, more out of habit than out of guidance; the waterfall’s roar was leading your way forwards.

You and Yunho trampled forward in silence, the vibrantly rich colors of the forest glistening around you: greens, blues, purples, pinks. The island you and your crew had landed on radiated color like the most vibrant of rainbows. The colors, if not so iridescently beautiful, were enough to make one nauseous.

Suddenly, the greens of the trees began to bleed into purple cliffs. The waterfalls’ roar was so loud you could almost taste the cool liquid on your parched mouth. Yunho, free from the vines and fronds of the fading forest, bounded on his long legs right to your side.

“Do you think this is it?” He whispered in wonder, his eyes sparkling in awe at your accomplishment. You grinned over at him, the tiresome journey here rolling away from your body as your excitement grew.

Suddenly, Yunho threaded his fingers with yours. Before you could be taken aback by a member of your crew holding your hand, Yunho’s long legs suddenly strode forward into a run, tugging you along with him.

“Come on, Captain! We’ve got a pearl to find!” Your heavy boots thudded into the dirt, growing heavy in your strides as the earth gave way to soft, powdery sand. Yunho carried you forwards, moving quickly towards the crystal blue water shimmering before you.

When the two of you finally stopped on the bank of the lagoon, your heart was threading quickly inside of your chest. You could hear Yunho’s quick breathing beside you, and then realized your hand was still clasped in his. Unknotting your fingers from his, you took one step closer to the water, letting the slow waves lap at the very edge of your boots.

Protruding from the crystalline water was large, purplish rocks that mirrored the cliff faces surrounding the water; the cliffs held the roaring waterfall that guided your path to the water’s edge and tumbled into the lagoon.

“Where do you think the mermaids are, Captain?” Yunho asked, his voice carrying a tinge of wonder as he took in the surroundings you found yourselves in. Taking out your handheld telescope, you closed one eye and gazed around your surroundings. Yunho took a step closer to you, apparently to get his own chance of gazing through the telescope’s lens. You tensed slightly as you felt the warmth of his back against yours, even through the fabric of your thin, billowy shirt. Heat flushed into your cheeks again, and you tried to hide the slight tremble from your hands as you raised the scope slightly upwards so Yunho could bend forward and take a look.

“There’s a cave under the waterfall. Why don’t we try there?” Yunho took up his step behind you, and the two of you were able to amble over the powdery soft sand to the base of the waterfall. Water droplets splashed onto your cheeks from the fall’s crash into the surface of the lagoon, and you couldn’t help but feel the chilly spray as you ducked behind the water’s curtain and into the damp cave beyond.

Yunho gasped out loud as his large frame crashed in behind you, and you immediately slapped a hand over his mouth, your own surprise almost getting the best of you. Your hand trembled, and you slowed your breathing, but the mermaid sleeping on the wet rock at the water’s edge inside the cave didn’t seem to stir.

You put a finger over your mouth, tiptoeing forward just slightly. The sentiment was short lived; Yunho took one step forward and sent a small rock by his foot crashing into the water right beside the sleeping mermaid.

Her eyes immediately shot open. She took one look at you, held your gaze for a moment, and then shot straight into the water. You sighed, defeated, and turned back to Yunho to snap something at him in frustration. Before any words could come from your open mouth, however, the water bubble beside you and suddenly an arm was extended, followed by the orange hair of the mermaid.

“Technically, I let myself be caught, so this now belongs to you. Take care of it,” she plopped a warm, shimmery rock into your hands and then once again plunged into the water.

“This… I can’t believe…” you gasped, gazing down at the object the mermaid had given over to you.

“You found it, Y/N!” Yunho whispered, childish glee and awe shining in his eyes as he rushed over to you.

“We found it,” you said, breathlessly. The pearl felt warm in your hand, the most beautiful thing you’d ever seen. Yunho placed his hands around yours, cupping them and the pearl in his giant palms.

Looking down at the beautiful gem in your hand, at the undiscovered world of wonder around you, you couldn’t help a blush from creeping into your cheeks. Yunho’s eyes met yours, his turquoise hair flopping into his face as a slow grin, a different sort of grin spread across his face.

“And that’s Captain Y/N to you,” you said, a lilt of teasing in your voice. With the pearl clutched in yours and Yunho’s hands, his eyes gazing into yours, you suddenly wondered if you’d found something even more beautiful and precious here on the island than a gemstone.
