The MKEBKE Underwear Ride, July 2012... Huge turnout, body paint, electrical tape, slow rolling, storm the Bastille, flat tires, police escort, friends on motorcycles undressing in the street, whiskey in Washington Park, more flat tires, BMX bandits, fire escapes... The sweet smell of summer in Milwaukee...

âStop that guy! Stop that guy!â I heard shouted from the top of the hill. The Powderhorn 24 was in full swing with only a few hours to go when a commotion started on the Minneapolis Greenway, just outside of the Freewheel Bike Shop. People looked around and soon realized what was happening.
Several people lunged and chased to try and grab him, but he just barely dodged their fingertips until, WHAM! one racer jumped at the man on the freshly stolen bike and tackled him to the ground.
The two got up, but there were shouts not to touch him (for legal reasons) and a few of the guys tried to quarantine the perpetrator without violence. Others called 911. The perp walked around, trying to dodge out of the way, trying to escape the 300 eyes that were now locked on him. He was pleading for everyone to âLeave me alone!â and suddenly bolted up the stairs, grabbing a bag on the way up.
More guys took chase in their clipless shoes, tired after 18 hours of racing. He crested the top and ran around a wall. We waited, wondering if he got away. Several seconds passed and the perp rounded the corner once again, peacefully detained and surrounded. Cheers erupted.
He was brought back down to the Greenway where he was surrounded by hecklers, while he pleaded, âI didnât do nuthinâ.â I got up in his face with my camera, smiling and taking pictures. âAre you going to put this on YouTube?â he asked. Others had their cameras trained on him too. I didnât want evidence of who he was. I only wanted him to know that his face was going to be plastered on the internet as a fucking douchebag bike thief.
Soon the police arrived and took over from there. âI thought it was my bike,â he said.
Hereâs some analysis of how stupid this guy was:
He is stealing a bike in front of 300 witnesses.
He is stealing a bike from people who LOVE their bikes.
He is stealing a bike from people who are faster than him.
His route to take the bike was through the largest group of people. Had he turned the other direction, away from the race, he may have had a chance at getting out (provided he wasnât spotted, after which he would have had an aggressive mob hot on his tail).
As he was fleeing the scene, he tried to steal another bag, which basically confirmed he knew what he was doing.
He was caught by weary cyclists in cleated road shoes.
He had apparently stolen a car stereo, just before attempting to steal this bike.
As I was snapping his picture I was thinking of Patton Oswaltâs rage at the loud-mouthed audience member on âWerewolves and Lollipops.â That inexpressible incredulity of meeting somebody who just doesnât get it. âIâm gonna be a douchbag forever!â
I havenât been able to find a police report for the incident yet, but when I do, Iâll be sure to tag his name.
âNobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, itâs just not that good. Itâs trying to be good, it has potential, but itâs not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesnât have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone Iâve ever met. Itâs gonna take awhile. Itâs normal to take awhile. Youâve just gotta fight your way through.â â IRA GLASS ON STORYTELLING

Richmond hosted the annual North American Cycling Courier Championship over Memorial Day weekend. Bike messengers from around the continent converged for a weekend of competitive delivery. The races consisted of a closed circuit around Chimborazo Park in Church Hill as well as an open course...
