I’m starting to think that the rule for the Dark Cacao Kingdom where ‘You only eat bitter foods when you reach a certain age’ is more of a requirement to get used to bitter foods.
When you think about it, Dark Cacao doesn’t mind if anyone eats sweets, like for example: Affogato before betraying him.
While arguing at The Wall. Affogato basically argues that they should stop working on the wall so that he could remain eating SWEET rainbow jellies, instead of the plain unflavored ones. Dark Cacao denies this by arguing if the Wall isn’t reinforced, they will not EAT AT ALL. Let’s clarify that:
Dark Cacao doesn’t reprimand or correct Affogato about eating sweets, actually, he doesn’t bring it up at all. He doesn’t mind when Hollyberry or Pure Vanilla eats sweets, and at the Council most of the foods there were mostly sweets. Sure there were Raisins, but raisins have a tacky yet sweet flavor to them. He doesn’t reprimand Gingerbrave for giving the Cream Wolf sweets, so in actuality, he doesn’t actually mind any of them eating sweets.
Heck the guy has a literal Milk Village in his kingdom, his son tastes more sweeter than him, and most of his friends are sweet. Heck when Hollyberry forces him to eat an Ice Cream, she remarks ‘One Time doesn’t count!’ Somewhat implying that Dark Cacao might have eaten something sweet at least once.
So why does the rule exist? Simple: Survival. According to Crunchy Chip in chapter 2 of Cookie Odyssey, when they were discussing how the Creme Republic treats the Lower City, Crunchy Chip says that the Dark Cacao ‘SURVIVES’ together equally, aka, Dark Cacao’s kingdom thrives out of survival, which is not a surprise.
Considering in some translations, the Dark Cacao Kingdom is pretty much poor, provided that Affogato had to buy the sweets during his small time as king, meaning that if the kingdom were to survive on sweets, they’d have less money to pay for it. And looking at the land, it is less likely that the people could make that many sweets for themselves unlike the other kingdoms. The Dark Cacao Kingdom is snowy and rigid, the waters are most likely to be frozen, with the only sea being known to be dangerous. And it is quite hard to grow crops or jellies in a harsh and snowy environment. So the rule there is to keep people alive rather than a tradition.
So the whole ‘You eat mostly bitter sweets when you’re older’ is mostly for survival, considering Dark Cacao’s way of leadership and the environment the Cacaoians live in.
