We are an Arizona Desert based family of Wandmakers, bringing you wands of the finest indigenous woods. Wood of any kind is scarce in the desert so the trees here are full of an inner strength and power that lets it survive in one of the driest places in North America.
Our Cores come from the most powerfully magical creatures of the North American South West. We mostly use Jackalope Antler, Thunderbird and Quetzalcoatl Feathers, and Gila Dragon Claw and Scale.
So it’s getting late and I was getting a little frustrated with it because it’s basically exactly what I wanted except it’s not quite “delicate“ enough. I wanted to thin the whole thing out a bit more, but then I went back and re-read the description of the commissioner and realize that not only is she 6 foot tall but also she wears heels and so I feel like having it like this is just about perfect. So here it is pretty much done in the rough. I just need to do some cleanup here and there and then do the finish sanding and polish sanding and give it a couple coats of something shiny to make it nice and glossy and protect it. In any case I’m really excited for this and how it turned out it’s very firm in my hand beautiful wood and in the couple of spots where I have polished it up experimentally the wood absolutely glows!
Got a commission for 14 1/4” Beech for a college graduation present for a young woman who prefers dresses and heels over tee shirts and jeans. I have a short deadline and picked up the wood at a cool new place on Saturday. Crazy weekend and stomach bugs for the whole family but I finally got to start tonight and this wood is beautiful and I’ve got the rough shape done! Phew! The “arm” needs to thin out a bit but I want to leave it long and straight. The handle will also thin out proportionally but it will be symmetrical diamonds (I’ve used this style handle a lot in the past and it’s so beautiful when I leave them cut sharply). I had to start the whole thing so thick so that i would have the width I wanted for the hilt in the middle. I’m not certain what I want to do there but I have an idea and I’m pretty excited about it. But what a pain to grind it down this much! I even used the table saw on the arm but that just leaves me so nervous so I didn’t do it on the handle. All in all I’m excited because this is already a beautiful wand in my mind and the grain is nice and even so I’m pretty sure it will be exactly what I have in my head as long as I remember to keep thinking a step ahead. Anyway, see what I meant about the color? Beech is not a dark wood at all.
