I wanted to take the silent medium of gifs and add some “sound” to them by taking clips from some of my favorite music videos. Elemental Mother

Time is elusive. It sneaks up on you in a rush and disappears just as quickly. Unless you are presently within consciousness of the current channel of time, it moves along unnoticed and undisturbed. big bang Series is a digital collage interpretation of the inevitable passage of time through elemental change; figuratively and literally. Water flows, fire burns, wind blows, earth grows, and life forever propels forward through space; a continuous succession of events pieced together one element at a time. When does time begin, and when does it end? Why do we perceive time to be in flight for moments and more stationary for others, when it is of equal measures for all? Time is finite and time is infinite. Time is love and loss. Time is a resource and IS of the essence, so use it wisely, for once it is lost IT is never found again.

This project, “Portraits of Tomorrow”, explores the connection between identity, nature, and time. As we are natural beings exploring the inherently surreal world of humanity, there are often amazing and disturbing moments that define our duality. The human forms matched with natural plants and insects whisper of our existence and demise. The bright colors and natural greys hint at the end. Are we natural beings or are we more? Is there more to us then decay or not? I started this process by looking at classic portraits and re-imaging them without the pure human element. Connecting classic portraits with natural decay. I tried to have my process be my concept by starting with a human image and then taking it away piece by piece.

These collages kinda remind me of those paintings of the seasons were the painter made portraits of people using fruit. Very cool.

Artist Statement

What is implied time? Implied time can be represented in the captured moment, an illusion of time passing, or the evidence of time already past. 

Football uses time, from running with the ball to kicking the ball during the game. I used three specific Broncos players that I thought would relate to time to express my idea and make it look like the image was moving across the page. I was influenced by my disappearing acts where I cut out Peyton Manning from the images and thought what if I used two other Broncos players with different forms of repetition in each collage to show what it would look like if time slowed down during a Broncos football game? I bet I could make something pretty cool and to my surprise, I did!

I like the first image, it actually inspired me for one of my images to use a motion blur type effect to show motion. Very cool.

Artist Statement: This project displays time through the concept of movement using repetition. When scrolling through nearly 50 Rolling Stone magazines from 2009, it’s hard to keep composure. I was flipping constant nostalgia. Attempting not to read the articles and find common themes. I realized that 2009 could have been the beginning of looking through less of our eyes, and more through a screen.

I love the milky getaway because you can really feel the motion within the image because of the curved lines and the fact the car is nearly leaving the picture. Good work.

I love the mixture of nature with the other elements as if everything is rotating around the tornado or hurricane. Very cool.

Implied Time: Fallow Garden

Fallow Garden: Letting a garden go fallow for a period of time gives its soil opportunity for restoration and regrowth. The theme of this project, as well as the implication of time, is personal growth (specifically my journey towards personal growth). We begin with the photos of vintage gardeners. The black and white images represent the past me – black and white split thinking and singular. The modern homes represent new ideas, expansiveness, and sustainability. The plants are the bridge between the past and the present. They are a literal representation of the “growth” that it has taken to move from old ways to new.

You can definitely feel the sense of transition within these collages, I love the use of the striped lines as well. Almost kinda like stairs as in you’re moving on up.

When starting to think about my collage for ‘implied time’, I couldn’t help think about the ‘time of my life’ and how my most adventurous moments are such a strong memory for me that will always feel frozen in time or stuck in the moment. I enjoy traveling and anything that gets my adrenaline pumping and those moments I am lucky to catch on film or camera. So for my project and my first big Adobe project, I used all my own photos of places I’ve really been crossing them with activities I have done. It was fun to use these photos for something and to relive these memories. I can close my eyes and be at any of these places anytime I want because I have been there and that to me is a mystery of time.

Mother Nature Shows no Mercy

Mother Nature has not held back this year. With so many tragic events going on its hard to not forget the smoke that soaks into my clothes. Burning, itchy eyes, a stuffed up nose, a cough here and there, and a confused mind on whether the symptoms are from allergies, the sad notion of Covid, or from the burning ranging forests. I have seen how deadly Mother Nature could be on the news, and from social media but I never wanted to live through it. A few days before completing this project I went outside to see the forbidden snow that started to drift down onto my car and I looked up into the sky to see the sun look like a bright red target warning us that it is not over.

In A Puff Of Smoke- Art Project 1: Implied Time

This project was admittedly very hard for me to be inspired by. The concept of implied time feels too vague to me and I guess my brain has just been conditioned to create from very tedious and specific prompts. This prompt gave me a lot to think about because what really is implied time? The best way for me to answer that was to just play around with the shape and movement of images and run with it. The first thing that came to mind about implied time through movement were dancers. They always seem to flow effortlessly into their next move and I think that was the reason as to why I melded them with smoke clouds. Smoke moves however it wants and dancers seem to have that sort of flow, even though I know that most of them train for hours and hours on end to appear effortless. I had some issues with the program I was using at first because I was trying to import all the images in a way that would always make it crash. Eventually, I figured it out and it was smooth sailing from there. I think I could have put more thought into my composition but overall I’m really proud of how they came out!

Each of my collages have meaning to me. I enjoy everything that I input into my artwork. My first collage describes me because i am from Chicago and I enjoy the 3 teams I tried to connect. My second picture is called “childhood” because of the sports and activities (football, baseball, snowboarding) you may have grown up doing and it may take you back to the good ole’ days. Lastly the “king of the jungle’ represents many different breeds and food chains in the world. The lions left eye is a owl, which represents knowledge and wisdom, the right eye belongs to a viper which represents stealth and patience, and the pigs nose represents the fear of not getting dirty and not being afraid behind the massive body of the this beast.

Reading Response

I had no idea that .gifs could be considered art, to me they have always been the alternative to communication or a way to make a funny video. I find the concept of having a .gif centered art exhibit and actually selling digital properties to be very interesting. I would much like to go to one of these exhibits one day, because now I realize that .gifs are just another medium that artists can use to express themselves with. I really enjoyed the artists that made .gifs for the fashion community in one of the videos.

Artist Statement: These three pieces are all pieces of time traveler’s from movies of my childhood thrown into the world of the Greeks. I attempted to show movement using repetition, using images that imply action, and blurring effects. Every time I mulled over the idea of this project about time in my head, I always came back to the idea of time traveler. Which brings the train of thought to the station of nostalgia where childhood favorite movies reside.

The Secrets of Collage

I found the article on collage making to be interesting. Seeing how each artist finds that medium to be useful to them and what they use it for was enlightening. Tya Alisa Anthony has some great examples of collage in her portfolio. One work that I particularly enjoy is “Two of Cups” from her Organic Tarot series. Putting the archived images of ex-slaves into a brighter light with the images of gold paint and plant life. Kelley Duffield’s work is all enjoyable. The simplicity of it all being juxtaposed with the chaos of the images is nice. One image that I enjoy is Untitled XIII, 2018 because I find the imagery of the skydiving woman with the zebra mask and the herd of giraffe looking at the viewer to be interesting. Mario Zoots makes some interesting pieces as well and I enjoy his use of primary colored shapes along with old photos.
