Art Project 5: Sabrina & Corina

Artist Statement: 

In the book Sabrina and Corina by Kali Fajardo-Anstine, the short story I chose was Chessman Park.

I chose this particular story because it showed what Liz misses after living and working in a Los Angeles bank. The intention I made in this piece of art was to portray what it would have looked like from Liz’s mother’s apartment window overlooking Chessman Park with the city of Denver and the mountain range. 

Two key items that I included was a sign that says “Home is where my family is” and a vase of poppies. The reason why I chose that quote instead of “Always remember, this is our home” is because they almost mean the same thing and Liz returned back home in Denver because she “missed her mother and the mountains.” I thought the idea of putting a vase of poppies on the window sill would resonate with the viewer because they are the flowers that are on the cover of the book and they also symbolize peace.

Reading & Response 5: Sabrina and Corrina

Kali Fajardo-Anstine’s narrative book, Sabrina & Corina with eleven short stories, is about a Indigenous Latina family living in Denver who fall into a cycle of violence against women, poverty, racism, and addictions of various kinds, coming together only through ritual. This book and the stories within, show a powerful meditation on friendship, mothers and daughters, and the deep-rooted truths of our homelands. It is also of unrelenting feminine power and an exploration of the universal experiences of abandonment, heritage, and an eternal sense of home.

The insight of a minimum waged barista working a mid-shift. The constant repeated motion of making all kinds of drinks. I wanted to show how one job can create a human robot system. Where the workers know where to step, what syrups to use, and have a understanding of what type of drink is needed. Along with that, the workers know where to move when other workers come down the line without saying a word. We have developed a unique relationship to understand each others body language.

Side Note: Will say the divider that is supposed to keep us workers distant, doesn’t work and it sucks.

I agree after watching the video that, that divider doesn’t work, lol. I don’t work at Starbucks but it does look like a challenging job because you have to know how drink is made with the correct ingredients and make sure to communicate with your employees when making them. Great video!

The making of art is an experimental process. As artists, we constantly test out ideas, mediums, colors, and techniques to get a feel for what works to best to express our intention and… what does not. This project was one such example of this, and an example of how concepts can evolve over time.

Initially, I believed that I had a very solid concept for this project. I created a story board and shot the video. It did not work, but I still believed in the concept and enacted it in a variety of ways in hopes of producing something that would adequately express my initial idea (the clock projected in the background of the video was a leftover of my initial attempts). By this point, I had watched several minutes of video of myself and decided to record myself watching the videos 1) because of the boredom that came with watching bad videos of myself and 2) the intrigue and curiosity about my reaction during this painful viewing session.

Ultimately, I felt that the video of me watching the other video had more to say than the initial video I created for this project.

Lol, that’s usually how I look when I have to do an assignment/project too when I’m reading the directions and wondering if I should start right away or do it later. But very cool how your expressions and body movements change throughout the video. Great video!

I found this project both fun and challenging. As an artist I don’t like to be involved in the viewing of the art, but this was definitely more fun than I expected. I focused on the monotony of the recent few months, and because I work in the service industry I work almost everyday and we’re busier than ever. The last few months it feels like all I do is get up, do school work, go to my job, and then rinse, wash, and repeat. That’s what I wanted to capture in this video. I struggled with portraying night and day because my blinds fail at blocking light in the first place but I think the point gets across. I am not the most confident person, especially in front of a camera so it was cool to push some boundaries with this piece.

We all can relate to this because everyone has a daily routine we have to follow. Its how life works and we have to deal with the ups and downs of it. Nice job having confidence with being in front of the camera and you could experiment and get curtains for your window to see if that helps with blocking light. But overall great video!

creative minds I started with my mind of how I can make creative images and I painted the image that came to mind and to show how people can create there own mind of art and to show that anyone can be a artist and make a art that could be good or not but to know that the work you make can be always the work that made someone who can imagen in their minds of great art works.

One Minute:

For my one minute project i felt like I should do something that i am experienced in and can accomplish under one minute. I chose to do a task at my job, Chicken-N-Spice. Being a shift manager i have many duties in the front line and the back line. This task of making our signature and famous chicken cheese fries is done in our back. I cut up the chicken into bite sized chunks and then drizzle our creamy and rich american cheese over the top of the potato wedges. Adding the 2 together topping it off with a cup of jalapeños. This was a very fun project becuase it allows the artist to create something they enjoy and something they know.

You do have to be fast when making fast food but also to make sure that it looks presentable which you do perfectly. This made me hungry watching and the steps sound simple. Great video!

Art Project 4: One Minute Performance

In honor of the legendary Masters golf tournament, I decided to dedicate this project to the the game of golf. For the first time in history the Masters tournament will be played in the fall instead of it’s usual early April weekend. It is a historical weekend that anyone of the fan of the game looks forward to all year, including me!

Golf is game that requires a great deal from the person playing and can teach you many things of life as well as golf. It is not only a game for guys in goofy pants and a fat ass as Happy Gilmore would suggest. In my years of playing, I can make parallels with personal situations to the game of golf. For instance, I started playing serious golf when I was 25. I was so embarrassed to start and felt I was too old in the game to start playing. I am 31 now and have competed in countless tournaments, religiously playing in leagues and have even made a hole in one! When I contemplated on returning back to school and I was so nervous, I somehow compared it to when I started golf. I was new to that and it took time and practice but the best things in life do. I never found so much solace, frustration, friendship and have found the love of my life in what I have found playing this stupid, addicting game. And now I am finding that same enjoyment and achievement being back in school.

 Title: “From 0 to 100″

I had a hard time thinking of an idea for this project but I decided to do a drawing type of video. The video includes 3 of my drawings that I’ve made and it’s supposed to demonstrate a drawing from sketch to final drawing in a instant. I learned this trick from watching some of my favorite artists and they reveal a new drawing sometimes in this way and in my opinion I think it’s a cool transition technique.Characters are from an anime called Demon slayer!

4D One Minute Performance

I wasn’t too confident about posting this project if I’m being completely honest. I’ve always had issues with my appearance and sometimes my body just doesn’t look right to me. Sometimes my hands look too big, sometimes my face looks too long, and sometimes everything just looks alien to me. Even with those thoughts I chose to stare at myself in a mirror for this project. I think it’s important to look at yourself and see what your reaction is from time to time. I mean, we’re in this body until the day we die so we might as well live with it right?

I too have had some issues with my appearance and how my body looks but it doesn’t mean that we should be disappointed in ourselves on how we look because there are ways we can improve our appearance, for example wearing makeup and working out. We were all made to be unique in our own way. Yes, I agree that it’s important to look at ourselves in the mirror and see what our reaction is from time to time. Great video!

Ariella’s Deep Breaths

Breathing is an involuntary, automatic, and biological response of everyone’s body. One does not survive without it. Time only moves forward. The inhale is only followed by the exhale, in and out, over and over again. Repeating until the end of one’s physical time. Take time to turn this vital bodily function into a voluntary, (say) manual, and controlled internal movement, make it a point of focus, a point of return, a stable base - breathing is our haven to thrive rather than just survive. It is so basic in nature, yet so complex and crucial to one’s health. These are mental health reminders; to inhale the present moment, and exhale to the next present moment. To take a deep breath.

           Randomly over the past couple of weeks I have recorded myself taking a single deep breath, with this performance art project in mind. My lungs are charred with carcinogens from being a former smoker and not leading a healthy youth lifestyle, let alone the pollution and poor air quality we live in. I took for granted my inherent ability to breath, but I choose now to practice breathing deeply, taking control of my body’s health at the basis of my own molecular levels. Through practices such as yoga, meditation, and physical training I am learning to breathe consciously, to use my breath as a tool for recovery, physically and mentally. The Deep Breaths shown in my performance are the ones I took consciously without practice. My reminders that I am completely alive. Some were silly, some felt awkward, some were forced but they all did the same thing for me in those moments. They centered me, and they got me closer to the next present moment.

Art Project 4: Performance Art

I took a couple American Sign Language classes back in high school, so I decided to dedicate this project to the beauty of Sign Language. Sign Language isn’t a very common thing you see on a daily basis. Sometimes at debates or political talks or other types of performances, there is usually a person who is signing what the speaker is saying for those who are hard of hearing at the event.

American Sign Language (ASL) is a complete, natural language that has the same linguistic properties as spoken languages, with grammar that differs from English. ASL is expressed by movements of the hands and face. It is the primary language of many North Americans who are deaf and hard of hearing, and is used by many hearing people as well. I am not deaf or hard of hearing but learning this type of language back in high school was pretty cool because I got to experience what deaf people have to go. If you ever want to learn another language, I would suggest learning Sign Language because this is one that beats all others and a great learning opportunity. As the years go by, I have forgotten how to do most of the signs I learned in those classes but one that stuck around was the alphabet.

So, enjoy my one minute performance art of me signing the alphabet in Sign Language and then at the end, I spell my name.

Reading Response 4

Roselee Goldberg- Performance: A Hidden History: Performance Art is an important art in our time. It has been around since the 19560s and is still a popular thing that people do and go see today. It’s different from other forms of arts because it has people acting rather than looking at a painting that is hanging on the wall. Roselee Goldberg explores performance art all the way back to the historical backdrop of Futurism and World War I. She states the issues that it had before and how it was resolved over time.

Coco Fusco- The Other History of Intercultural Performance: Coco Fusco investigates the history of public performance. In 1992, she created in collaboration with Guillermo Gomez-Pena called “Two Undiscovered Amerindians.” where they spent three days in a golden cage performing the piece. ‘This performance was intended as a critique of the contemporary art-world, whose shallow redemptive multiculturalism often sidelined important issues of racial difference and radicalized aesthetic perception.’

I saw a video of memories and a music about good old days and when I put them together and to show what I see of how someone’s life can go and start to remember the life you had when you were with someone that is a family, a friend, or someone you care about in your life and we learn to never forget the one memory of happiness.

Supercut: Time Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about time. About how precious it is, how I’ve taken it for granted, how fleeting our days and hours and minutes and seconds can be and how they can change in an instant. And, about how this year has gone by so fast, yet it has also been going. by. so. slow. How do we frame time? What does a year mean? How and where does (or will) this fit into the spectrum of our lifetimes. How will we (or I) reflect back upon this time? On a time when our mountains are burning and our city is disappearing. What will I make of this time? How resilient am I, and how will this change me?
