Song was surprised by Paigeâs decision, not expecting to find the woman there at the table in the dining room looking over articles and help wanted posters scattered atop it.
With Eri napping soundly upstairs, Song finally had some time to take a breather and so she had made a pot of tea to share with Paige and now she stood there beside the sofa where she sat, the tea tray in her hands and a proud smile gracing her face.
âYou know⊠I think that is a wonderful idea.â Song had always been supportive of Paige, and this time was no different as she sat the tea tray upon the table and sat beside her, picking up some missing person flyers and looking them over, a look of sadness in her honey hazel eyes.
âSo many have gone missing, most never found and itâs such a tragedy. These people need hope⊠and I think this will be a good area of work for you. You have done so well in your recovery, Paige, and I think you are ready for this. People out there need you. With the Shining Blade swamped as it is with things stirring the way they are, Iâll do what I can to aid your search.â
She lowered a flyer and looked to Paige, searching her friendâs features sincerely, âRegardless of your choices, you will always have a home here, Paige. We love you. Surely you know that.â
Graceful hands moved to the teapot, steam gently wafted up from the spout as Song poured a cup for her friend and then herself. âIâm proud of you. Itâs a noble decision and certainly not an easy one.â
Paige smiled as they sat down to drink tea together. It was a small ritual, but one Paige had come to truly enjoy with her friend. She sipped at her tea, looking out the window.
âI know,â she said quietly. âAnd thatâs why I hate to leave, but also why Iâve gotta leave. If I stay here, Iâll be safe, but I donât know if Iâll be happy. I need to put some good back in the world. Too much bad has come about because of me.â
She reached out and took Songâs hand, smiling at the woman. âI know youâll always be here, always be my family that loves me. And that means more to me than anything. Itâs also the only reason Iâm strong enough to go out on my own. Because I know I have a home to come back to.â She chuckled and shook her head. âI havenât had that, not a real home, since I was a child. Thatâs kinda messed up, yeah? No wonder Iâm a bit off.â
Leaning back, Paige gestured to the pages on the table. âThereâs a lot here. And I know thereâs going to be a lot of lost causes. Lots of people are dying out there and Iâm not going to be able to save them. But I thought Iâd start looking through them, find one or two promising leads, and then follow them out to Lake Doric.â With both hands, she sipped the tea again. âItâll probably take me a day or two to sort through all this. Then Iâll head out there.â
Paige was tempted to apologize, to keep explaining, to try to make sure Song knew that she wasnât running from this new family, but then she looked at the womanâs soft, proud smile, and she realized she didnât have to. Much as they had been strangers a year before, they knew each other now. Or at least Song knew her. Sometimes it felt like the woman could read her mind. And that was a blessing most of  the time.
âIf youâve got anything pressing, I can stay here longer and look after Eri. Weâre going to the park tomorrow and thatâs a date Iâm not missing out on,â she grinned. âAnd Iâm not gonna stay for months and months. Maybe like...a couple of weeks. If I canât find someone in that time, theyâre probably dead or beyond my reach. Then I can come back and rest for a while before I go out again. Does that sound...reasonable?â
