Finally got it off the floor.
When life get complicated I look to the philosophy of AC/DC to guide me.
Project 1 of 7 complete... it will be a long weekend for sure, but worthwhile and rewarding in the end.
Spinning some Brick - Good High today. Many thanks to my friend Liz.
Cultural Archeology
In basic terms I am an archeologist and anthropologist.
Digging through the dusty bins of discarded gold, hunting for treasure others have tossed aside like common refuse.
The record store is my excavation site, the crates of old vinyl are the sarcophagi of forgotton wisdom, and the records I bring home are the cultural artifacts. My music room is my museum.
I perform the ritual.
I power up the system, flip the turntable's dustcover up, slide the record out of the sleeve, place it on the platter, gently toggle the start switch, watch as the record begins to spin and the tone arm lifts, sways left over the empty groove before the first track and watch until just before the needle kissses the groove.
I close my eyes.
Then the sound. A sound like no other sound in the world. The sound of the needle making contact with the record. Some people say it's a pop, some say a thump, some say it's a pop-grinding sound.
For me, it is the Tibetan Singing Bowl, indicating the start of my twenty minute meditation.
I sit down, put my feet up and listen. Sometimes I close my eyes, other times I just sit, looking at nothing.
The music starts and my mind empties, filled with the empty spaces between the notes. The rhythmic beat of the drums, the pulse of the bass, the melody of the instruments lay out the canvas for the lyrical poetry that will be painted. The speakers pulse, in and out in rapid cycles. But its not hertz I hear; its a rythmic chant, a pray set to music.
I listen, I interpret, I relate... the music comes in, twisting its way through my brain, knocking loose memories. A cleansing ritual washing the stresses of the day away.
Music centers me, shows me the way, brings balance; both ying and yang. I am not a record collector. I am a collector of cultural artifacts... a meditator on music.
The two newest additions... both of The Dead Weather albums, used but pristine condition.
A little birthday loving from my friend Kavin... Raconteurs, second album first pressing. Gonna spin this first thing in the morning, when I'm not at the end of a long day running on three hours sleep.

Jack White is a dick... but I think I love him.
So last night, before the concert I purchased his Lazarrato album, on vinyl. I got home late last night so I didn't get a chance to play it.
But first thing this morning, I delicately open it, place it on my turntable, fire up my amp, drop the needle on side one, track one. The needle moves into the groove and proceeds to play this sound in a loop.... like a legion of demons screaming.
After 30 seconds of this, I pulled the needle off, grabbed the record, visually inspected it, outside of a small warp, and the label on side two being off center, I see nothing visually wrong and spend another 40 minutes trying to figure out what is wrong with my turntable.
I then log into third man records website and ask for a replacement... as my turntable plays other records fine. I'm still waiting for a reply from them. And I waited.
Then I got bored this evening.
So after troubleshooting for the last 30 minutes, placing the needle in the middle of the album and listening to play normally and then the demonic screen again as the needle is at the beginning of the record. I am stumped as to what is causing my turntable to do this.
So try again and I look at the needle after a song plays and the needle is moving from the inside out putting it at the beginning of the album again.
Turns out the album is cut with a reverse groove, playing normally, but from the inside out. No warning on the record that this is the case.
Ultimate prank. Good one Jack... Dick.
Album sounds great though
Those early days... damn.

I love it.
I miss the 70s. Simpler times.
Seventies... back when vinyl wasn't retro-vintage.
