You've been in Carter family from as long as you could remember. You were a 3 year old kid when both your parents lost their lives in an car accident. Incidentally you were at Carter residence when that happened. You remember Mrs. Carter waking you up in the middle of the night and taking you to hospital for your mum to see you one last time. You were too young to understand the depth of the situation, you only enjoyed living with the Carters.
You grew up having your elder sister Margaret "Peggy" Carter. She wasn't the most perfect sister, not that you had any choice. Peggy being only 2 year and a half years elder than you, so, you always took after her. Her uniform, clothes, cycle, books, stationary etc. You did it because you felt obliged and you never wanted to put Mr. and Mrs. Carter under any pressure.
So now, here you were, wearing the white gown, standing in the alter beside Steven Grant Rogers, the to be husband of your sister Peggy Carter, who's sudden and untimely death forced you to take up after her once more.
Peggy had told no one that she was battling with leukemia. She just left a note for your parents saying you were to marry Steve. They asked you to fulfill wish of their now dead daughter and you obliged, once more. Steve wasn't happy either but he did it anyway.
The look in his eyes told you a million things, including the fact that he would never love you. You looked around and faces of people Steve called his family and they had similar look. Look of disapproval.
✉️
Steve Grant Rogers was an only child of Joseph Rogers and Sarah Rogers. They were a happy family until Steve turned 18, it was then they both died due to an outbreak of influenza. Same was the story of James Buchanan Barnes, "Bucky". They met as toddlers and their friendship blossomed since. After getting in college together, they ended up meeting Tony, Pepper, Sam, Natasha, Clint and Thor. They ended becoming a family.
A family who collectively disapproved of you. Who collectively missed and mourned Peggy.
✉️
Peggy had met Steve during their post graduation. Steve took art history and Peggy took literature. They met in an museum, Peggy was admiring an artwork which happened to be Steve's favorite. Since then they began talking. Peggy would send him write ups over texts, they'd go for coffee, art festivals and what not. Peggy tuned with others as well. With Tony she discussed technology, with Sam she spoke of space and universe, with Pepper she spoke of marketing skills, with Clint she bonded over her love for dogs and with Thor she bonded over love for beer and food. It took her some time to bond with Natasha but eventually they became best friends.
It was Natasha who left the church when you said "I do".
You knew then it was going to be difficult.
They knew you, all of them did, but to them you were nothing more than Peggy's young sibling who tagged around her to be with them.
✉️
The entire ride home Steve was quiet. And when you did reach his house, he sprinted in with your bags and put them in the guest room and closed himself in his room.
You did the same. You saw yourself in mirror once again, this time with your mind in place. Prior to the wedding you were drown in river of emotions you hadn't felt before, fear, worry, grief, excitement, curiosity and what not.
The dress obviously belonged to Peggy, at least her choice, the tailor had it changed to your size, Peggy knew she wasn't going to make it to the wedding. The ring you wore probably belonged to Steve's mum, you remembered Peggy telling you. The stone was heavy with the responsibility. You kissed the diamond, knowing probably this the most closest you'd get to Steve. You closed your eyes for a moment, the only moment of peace you thought. But it was disturbed when there was a knock on your door. It was Steve. You smiled, a weak smile that was filled with a hope.
"I want my ring back." Steve said.
"Oh um sure." You smiled as you handed the ring back.
"I'll get you a different one." Was all he said and left your heart with a crack.
✉️
You never saw Steve after. He'd come and leave whenever he pleased. One morning you saw a ring kept on table, a simple gold band. You wore it and smiled, like you had any other option.
✉️
You'd always try to greet Steve when he returned but he never reciprocated. You'd cook for him, he'd never eat nor acknowledge you. The only time he ever spoke to you was when you were cleaning the door of his room and were about to enter.
"Don't you fucking dare go in!" His voice boomed in the passage making your jump in fear.
"Stay away from my room! You hear me?" Steve walked towards you and clutched your arms, making you wince in pain, "And that..." He pointed to the vase, the one which you had changed the location from table to teapoy. "Never change location of the objects around the house." He shook you painfully. "Never! It's enough I've got to deal your presence." With that he stormed off leaving you hurt, both physically and emotionally.
Bucky was right there in the house, Steve had brought him for some game night, he too gave you cold shoulder when you greeted him. And after your commotion with Steve he witnessed, he too said something that left you with another crack in your heart.
"It is best if you don't do relocations or redecor. Peggy has picked and placed everything around here, don't taint that." With that he left.
You felt like an alien around the house since then.
You continued to smile and greet Steve, but your habitat was only limited to your room. You hardly came out and if you did it was just for food and grocery shopping.
You had cooked every other delicacy Steve and Bucky enjoyed. Whenever they were home, you'd make the food and keep it on table for them to eat. But they never did.
You remembered how much both of them enjoyed eating all those years ago. They'd always ask for more. But things had changed since. alas.
✉️
Tony, Pepper, Clint, Sam and Natasha were a different story altogether. They visited Steve but never came home. They picked him up outside the gate and drove off.
Sam had once invited everyone over for dinner, his sister had made him invite you, so reluctantly he did and Steve brought you along. You had made their favorite dessert Cheesecake. But that night, no one ate the dessert except Sarah and her kids.
For the first time then, you had cried. You never wanted to take up after Peggy, but you only did because Mr. and Mrs. Carter wanted you too. This was the only thing they ever asked of you.
✉️
After the dinner though, at least Tony started visiting Steve's house. You smiled and greeted him, he reluctantly smiled.
"We're ordering pizza." Steve announced. "We wish to eat here in the living room." He said looking at you.
You gave a weak smile and ran off in Steve's guest room.
After this event, everyone hung out at Steve's place with you cooped in Steve's guest room.
Steve would laugh and joke around, something he never did around you. You would sometimes peak from the corner just to see him laugh. The same laugh you had fallen in love with all those years ago when you first saw him in the museum.
The longing in your eyes was expressed in the form of tears, a sad smile graced your lips and heart was heavy with love and hurt.
Bucky saw you peaking, he couldn't understand what you wanted, the curiosity in his eyes was caught by Steve who followed his eyes to your form. Your eyes were void and you were too lost to notice the laughter had died and everyone stood waiting for Steve's reaction whose eyes had an unreadable look.
Steve motioned everyone to move out and walked up to you making you jump in realization. If it was physically possible, your heart would've broke out of your ribcage and ran off. But instead you froze on the spot.
"Party is over, you can eat the leftovers considering you look hungry." With that Steve left.
You didn't know what to feel as you kept staring at the uneaten pizza.
✉️
After Peggy's death, Steve was just left numb. Even when she died, she made sure you were taken care of, her baby sister who she loved dearly. Since the college you had always tagged along, always wanting what Peggy had. It pissed him off. Sure he sympathized with you loosing your parents, but that didn't give you any right to be entitled to have whatever others had.
You got everything for free. Everything others worked for. He hated you. If didn't love Peggy, you'd be long gone out of his life. Every one hated you.
They often bitched about you and your deceiving looks. Their longing for Peggy often stem from dislike of you. Bucky especially knew Steve would never take the first step towards divorce, so it had to be you.
There was a reason they hung out at Steve's and the reason was to alienate you to the point you'd leave. Bucky would force Steve to bring you along but in the end they all ignored you and made you feel unwelcomed. They never ate anything you made, never responded to your smile or small talk and excluded you in all their conversations.
You tried hard to do please them. Your smile never deterred. The last words of Peggy always echoed in your ears.
Take care of them. Love them no matter what. You deserve their love and care.
Your dedication and their apathy bloomed from the love you all had for Peggy.
✉️
On another meaningless morning of your life, your phone rang. Nobody ever called or texted you anymore, not since you left your hometown and moved in with Steve in New York.
"Hello?" You responded. The news you got shattered you but at the same time gave you a hope to rebuild your life.
Mr. and Mrs. Carter had passed away peacefully in their sleep together.
You had always looked up at the couple for the dedication and love they had for one another. You wished someday you'd have that. You mourned their death. Packing your bags you decided to go to their funeral. But you weren't planning to return. Your marriage was based on your promise to them, Peggy did ask you too look after Steve but he was well taken care of and everyone including Steve knew that. You also knew Steve wasn't a huge fan of Carters and given a choice wouldn't want to attend their funeral. His ties with them were cut off Peggy died and they insisted him to marry you.
You signed the divorce papers which you had made on the second day after your wedding knowing one day, after your adoptive parents died, you'd walk away.
✉️
Steve and the others were chilling at their usual place, when Coulson, the lawyer showed up with Peggy's Will.
Everyone was surprised. They never knew she left any will behind and even when she did, they didn't expect it to be read after 5 months after her death.
"I'd request everyone whom Peggy considered close, that included her adoptive sister, Steve and her family, Natasha, Tony, Pepper, Thor, Sam, Clint and Bucky." Coulson announced.
They all smiled. They were her family.
"The sister is not here." Steve said.
"Call her, it is important for her to be present." Coulson announced.
Steve nodded and dialed your number. He tried again and again and again, only to hear the number you're calling is out of reach.
By the time he called you for a millionth time, he was fuming. "Why can't we just go ahead without her? If there's anything Peggy left for her, I'd give it to her."
Coulson who had been patiently waiting for over 2 hours nodded and began to proceed.
To my dear Y/n,
I am so so sorry. You didn't deserve whatever I threw at you. I was so pissed when mum and dad told me you would be living with us. You got all the love and attention, you new toys, everything brand new. So I despised you. As we grew up I just wanted to be the first one to get it all. I know you felt it. You were too kind to say anything.
I'm so sorry about Steve. I know you fell in love with him when you first saw him at the museum. And like a childish idiot I wanted to take away that from you too. And I did. I'm so so sorry baby. I never thought it would go as far as marriage. I just wanted to take his first kiss and leave him tainted for you. I wanted to leave him in the alter and run away, knowing our parents, I knew they'd force you to marry him and I knew you would.
I paid my price. Karma truly spares no one. I couldn't have said all of it without crying and I knew you'd forgive me even before I finished, so here I am writing a letter awaiting my death like a coward. I'm so sorry baby. I'm extremely sorry. I hope you forgive me.
Love Peggy.
Coulson folded the letter neatly and took out a locket which had a note tucked with it.
I brought this for both of you. It is locket that opens, it has picture of you and Steve. This is the one thing I don't want to taint. It is all yours, brand new.
Coulson handed the locket to Steve who ran short of words. He looked at the smiling photo of you. A smile he had painfully taken away from you.
"There is another letter addressed to you Mr. Rogers. Shall I proceed?"
Steve could only nod.
Steve,
I have lost the right to call you dear or all those loving names a long time ago. That wasn't even my right to begin with. I never loved you, it was Y/n. The write ups I've ever sent you were written by Y/n, those delicacies I've ever cooked was Y/n. The bonds of our friendship was all Y/n. Y/n was interested in everything you all were into. I just was determined to take it all away. There were times I'd make Y/n chat with you on messages while I was doing something else. It was a painful reminder for her that you were mine and she was just a shadow of me. I took advantage of her kindness, her obligation towards our parents and her love for you.
I can only apologize now. I cared for you yes, but it was nothing more. Every idea I've ever came up for our date was all Y/n. I forced her to hangout with us because I was no one without her. Everything was built because of her. And I wanted her to be something she always was afraid of being, a burden. I wanted her to be a shadow. The truth was and till the day is, I was a shadow of Y/n.
I am truly sorry Steve. I know saying this is irrelevant now, I know all of you are already showering her with love and you'll know how amazing she is, but I couldn't die with the guilt. I hope you forgive me.
Peggy.
"That's all there is. I trust you to give the locket to Mrs. Rogers." Coulson smiled and left the room heavy with silence.
Steve read the letter over and over. The locket in his hand felt heavy. Everyone else was left shocked, hurt and guilty. Bucky approached Steve and kept his hand on Steve's shoulder knowing he is broken.
"I'm going home." Was all he said as he left.
✉️
Steve didn't know at point but he was crying on his way home. The memories flashed before his eyes. All of them. With every memory he could now see longing in your eyes. He remembered how he cracked opened your heart intentionally and unintentionally. He of course knew the dinners and Bucky's idea of alienating you. He knew Bucky did it for him and Steve let him.
Reaching home he frantically called for you. The walls chanted your name but you were nowhere to be seen. His panic filled gaze fell on the table. There were papers, a note and a ring on top.
It doesn't feel right to not tell you, Mr. and Mrs. Carter passed away. My obligation and burden on you ends here.
Sorry for the inconvenience I've caused. Hope you find your happiness and live your life on your terms. I wouldn't want anything more than you've give me. Thank you. Maybe one day we can meet again under different circumstances.
Y/n.
You had signed the papers. It explained your phone not being reachable. He didn't know where you went as he remembered Peggy telling him about immersing her parents ashes somewhere peaceful, a place only her and you knew.
Steve knew even if he flew down at your hometown, it would be too late. And that you would have left. Not knowing how to process the events that were spiralling around him, he sat there in the darkness with a heavy heart.

“A’right,” Steve’s voice boomed through the microphone. “We have a new drummer.” He gave the crowd in front of him a very big smile. “He’s new into this, but he’s got all the qualifications we need.” He could see the audience talking to themselves, asking whether they kicked Bucky out of the band and hired a new drummer or not. Steve’s smile widened. “Ladies and gentlemen,” he said. “I present you, Miles Barnes!”
