I’ve been HYPED for the @cebleague Summer Series starts up this Saturday (streaming on CBC) and our @ottawablackjacks making their inaugural season debut! To celebrate Ottawa’s return to professional basketball I drew @emk32_ , a player who has a long history with our capital city that includes playing for Ottawa’s last pro team, the Skyhawks! A patriot’s conclusion is simple: Loving a country means you have to be ready to acknowledge its flaws, and embrace its growth. For me wearing this flag is an oath to uphold the freedoms and rights of people from all walks of life. Not just issues that directly serve me. As far as I’m concerned anything less is markedly un-Canadian. Hi, it’s been a minute. I know I owe your all some new art and I’m sorry for that, but if you follow me it’s not for speed really. Present events being what they are have robbed me of my normal creative drive. While I intend to get back to artwork again soon... This is a lot for us artists of colour. So for now, artistically speaking, I need time. However long or short that may be. For those who don’t already know I am mixed black and white, I know that may turn some of you off. The fact is I have been keenly aware of prejudice my entire life. I am just old enough to remember the Rodney King verdict, and the impact of which managed, even, to reach all they way to our little black neighbourhoods in east Ottawa. Images like the ones you are currently seeing are not foreign to us, we grow up with them. We share them, way before social media we shared them. We breathe them. They are indelible, they are a part of us. They are in our eyes, if you choose to look directly. I did not create this instagram to expose or challenge anyone’s privilege, this is where I go to share my random drawings and have a silly fun time with you all. I hope we can continue to do that. But I am proud of my blackness, and that is something I cannot refrain from addressing today. Social isolation has had some negative effects on my creativity, for me engaging with other artists drives me to produce more content. This weekend I painted with real media gouache for the first time in my life while video chatting with friends online.
