Final Idea

SO I finally think I've figured out what I want to do for our second project... POOP!! hehe I am actually going to do how not picking up your dog poop is actually affecting water pollution MUCH more than people realize. I didn't have any idea how much! But this subject actually really works well because my partners are basing their target audience on children for their presentations so I thought making a funny interactive animation that teaches kids how not picking up their dogs poop is harming the water that they drink and swim in.

YAY for POOP! (well not really since it's bad but yay for having a finalized idea! now to go draw and animate...)

User Testing (sorta)

So today i had a few friends try out testing what my ebook will be like, which was sort of hard because it was still in pdf form so they couldn't actually click on things and have things pop up like I want them to, but I explained to them the idea of it and they seemed interested and understood how it would work. I also explained the idea of adding my face illustrations as a kind of side-commentator with all the information and they really liked the idea of that and thought that would be a fun added feature. They did have a few corrections like some opacity and text but the general consensus seemed to show that it would be pretty straight forward to them how the book would work.

So this was more of a beta test as to if they liked the ideas and the concept of how everything will work but once I figure out how to create the pop ups in iBooks Author I can have people actually try out the interactive part of the book.

From what they were able to do, I think the user test went pretty well but I would like to be farther along by friday and have people try out my final design (maybe using more of a think-aloud protocol test without me explaining anything) on the weekend before it's due on Tuesday.

Behavior Change

There's so much that goes into trying to change anything. Change people's minds, change the government, change ourselves, etc. So reading the Behavior Change, you really see how in order to actually change people, you have to almost get them to do it unknowingly (the Dark Arts). By changing something so that it becomes habit or routine, it can really make a difference, even thought the person doing it doesn't see it. And it's important not to dance around the issue and simply address it head on. But by using psychology to help your change, you allow people to do this change voluntarily (with your guidance of course). All of this can be seen in advertising, because why would we want to buy this item when we already have an item just like it? Because I was influenced into voluntarily purchasing a knew item because I thought I needed to (courtesy of the advertising I saw on tv) But being able to use such powers for good, isn't always that common. But by changing this, and introducing more 'voluntary' change, it will become more sustainable in the long run.

Design is a powerful thing because it influences people in ways they don't even realize. Personally when I hear people say that art or design is a waste of a major and that we will be 'starving artists' the rest o our lives, couldn't be farther from the truth. Design is used in EVERYTHING and makes our world function the way it does. Like I said early about advertising influencing us to do things, design does that as well. Designers but buttons where they think a person would look for a button, therefore making the interaction easier and a much smoother process. Same with poster design; a person naturally reads from top to bottom and left to right, so we make sure to put the most important information where people will look first and last because at a glance, that is what people will see. And like the chapter says, there is a lot that goes into the design process, whether it's data gathering or developing a user friendly interface for the right kind of audience. All these measures are crucial to changing how people will be influenced by your design.
