Marrakech

I can smell again. Warm wafts of diesel fuel, charred, freshly butchered meat, heavy turkish tobacco, cheap tourists, recently tanned leather, and textiles that have hung in place for decades untouched, all the while becoming encrusted in this desert perfume.

Our riad is a paradise hidden amongst and inside a labyrinth of indistinguishable roads, alleys, and walkways all the color of sand. It seems impossible not to use words such as “oasis” as I lay quite literally next to a turquoise-tiled pool, and under a canopy of palm fronds. A family of parakeets quietly peck away at seeds as a solitary turtle, we’ve named him Simon, basks half of his shell under a cast iron day bed. I never imagined this climate to be ideal for any animal incapable of shedding or panting, but Simon seems just fine.

Lets talk sounds. At the moment a tremendous mixture of school children singing on the street below, cats in heat, old model mopeds screaming and weaving around blind corners, and mid-morning prayers being played over what can only be the oldest megaphone still in existence are colliding to create a symphony that I will never forget. I am acutely aware of who I am, and where I stand in this world at this very moment.
