the popularization of the term "cultural appropriation" has done way more harm than good. it's had little or no effect on the behavior it was actually meant to critique, while driving a whole generation of anxious, well-intentioned people into useless moral quandaries over the most frivolous bullshit. your evangelical aunt is still having a Passover seder to feel closer to "Yeshua" while my OCD clients are agonizing over whether it's unethical to study a language.

always having to relearn that the threshold for being important to others is lower than I think. always thinking certain relationships are only peripheral because we don't talk everyday or don't know everything about each other. always feeling guilty, selfish somehow, for not being someone's confidant, not sending each other years of long, soul-baring letters or something. always jarring to find out I matter and exist in others' minds anyway. always surprising how much one conversation or comment can mean. always confusing, how much and how little we have of each other, how transparent and mysterious everyone is. how bare our souls are anyway.
