the popularization of the term "cultural appropriation" has done way more harm than good. it's had little or no effect on the behavior it was actually meant to critique, while driving a whole generation of anxious, well-intentioned people into useless moral quandaries over the most frivolous bullshit. your evangelical aunt is still having a Passover seder to feel closer to "Yeshua" while my OCD clients are agonizing over whether it's unethical to study a language.
Andrea Joyce Heimer (US-American, 1981) - A Bear Sighting Was The Most Coveted Sighting Of All, For Its Danger And Hulk, And For Its Rarity. One Night While We Slept In My Grandmother's Tin Can Trailer, A Bear Got Tangled In The Brush Pit For A Time And We Listened To It Grumble In The Dead Of Night. It Occurred To Me The Bear Was Having An Off Day. My Grandmother Slept With A Loaded Gun, But She Always Pointed Out It Was For The Two-Legged Animals, Not The Four-Legged Ones. I Used To Have A Dream Where Bears Clambered Through My Stables. Now, I Have Two Bears Who Come To My Yard. I Tell Them Things And They Go On Their Way, And I Go On Mine. These Are Just Some Thoughts I Have On Bears. (2026)
always having to relearn that the threshold for being important to others is lower than I think. always thinking certain relationships are only peripheral because we don't talk everyday or don't know everything about each other. always feeling guilty, selfish somehow, for not being someone's confidant, not sending each other years of long, soul-baring letters or something. always jarring to find out I matter and exist in others' minds anyway. always surprising how much one conversation or comment can mean. always confusing, how much and how little we have of each other, how transparent and mysterious everyone is. how bare our souls are anyway.
My role on the post-collapse commune is gonna be the guy who points up and says "cormorant" every time there's a cormorant flying overhead

So basically i was discovered as an infant at the bottom of a big sack of oats by an enterprising horse, who spared my life and trained me in the lost arts (falls into companionable silence for a few minutes) Can i ask you something
I’ve been obsessed with this tiktok for days now
Person: "Hello sir." he pets the frog with one finger.
Person: "Have a good day. Actually wait a minute. You missed a bug, but I got you home boy. Hold on." he picks a bug up and throws it next to the frog.
Frog: turns around and eats the bug.
Person: "OHHHHH-" sings high pitched and angelic like he witnessed a miracle.
"The more I made new friends, the clearer it was to me that no one is ever really done making new friends, and very few people are averse to it. I used to assume that people 'already had their friends,' but that was almost never the case. Even when people seem to be busy and social, they're often very open to getting to know someone new.
And people don't stick to their own categories as much as you'd think. You throw a party or start a book club, and people show up, they're curious, they're into it. You go sing karaoke at a bar or go bowling, and everyone is ready to strike up a conversation. They don't care if you're exactly like them. People are friendlier than they seem. It's strange how I didn't understand (or care to recognize) that when I was younger. Interesting people know that interesting people come in all shape, sizes and ages."

i think it would do a lot of people good to remember that Mormons are white supremacists, no nuance, no debate, no arguing how they've gotten "more diverse", their whole belief system is fundamentally rooted in white supremacist ideals
