Plot: Mandrake bothers you while you hunt
You were as still as the morning snow you hunted in, eyes clear and focused on your prey: a black capped chickadee nestled in the crook of a tree. Pulling your bow taut, ready to let loose your arrow at a moments notice, your breath coming out in bouts of fog, you narrowed your eyes and stretched your arm back.
An arrow whistled through the air, feathers bursting as the poor songbird shrieked and fell to the ground. But it wasn’t your arrow, still nocked between your fingers.
Your face and arm fell as you snapped around.
His stupid grin was looking down at you from above and he waved. “Well fancy seeing you here,” Mandrake smirked, tilting his head with his hand on his hip.
You dropped the arm holding your bow, “Really?”
He gave you a charming smile and darted off to the forest floor on his bird, but you could only bristle and clench your jaw as he swooped down to collect what should have been your catch.
Mandrake held up the dead bird with a smile, turning back to look at you with pride. But even from this far away, he could see your glare, and you turned away, storming off.
The pride he felt in his chest faltered and his smile dropped, brows furrowed. What was up with you?
Three hours. It took you three hours to track down any sort of life in the dead of winter and your beautiful idiot of a husband took the only game you’ve seen all day.
Sulking, you stopped by the edge of the frozen over bog that surrounded the north-eastern side of Wrathwood and crossed your arms, tapping your foot impatiently.
“Honey?” You stifled a groan and rolled your eyes as you heard Mandrake and his grackle land behind you. “Aren’t you going to come eat? It’d be a waste of good food.”
Oh his voice was getting on your nerves. He sounded almost amused by your frustration.
You scoffed, turning your head away.
“What?” Mandrake chuckled, coming up beside you, leaning in as he tried to get a good look at your face. “Baby, come on, look at me,” he gently took your bow from your hands, wrapping an arm loosely around your cloaked shoulders. “Did I…do something?”
“Did you—oh come on, you know what you did!” You huffed, swatting him away. “That was the only bird I’ve seen all day!”
Your husband. Your darling husband, your darling, beloved and stupid husband, laughed. “There it is.”
Upon seeing the murderous glare in your eyes and the tight scowl on your face, Mandrake’s mouth sealed shut and he shrunk back. “Ah…you’re actually upset about that…”
You huffed sharply, snatching back your bow.
He held up his hands in surrender, smiling sheepishly.
“No,” you held up a hand in his face, turning and walking away from him, “I’m mad at you.”
“Y/n, come on—!” Mandrake laughed, following after you. You gave him the cold shoulder, sticking your nose up defiantly.
He huffed, sighing as he watched you. Always so stubborn you were. Oh but he loved it, he wouldn’t have you any other way.
You stood at the edge of the bog, watching the way the bare trees and brambles creaked in the cold wind, arms crossed.
Mandrake came up behind you and wrapped an arm around your shoulders, making you bristle. “Have I ever told you how beautiful you look in weasel?” He asked with a charming smile.
You eyed him with a raised brow. What was he up to? “What?”
“I mean it,” he said, nuzzling into your shoulder, fingers playing with the tufts of fur that made up your cloak. “The soft brown fur…it really brings out your eyes…”
You glanced away, but that didn’t hide the way your cheeks flushed.
“Ugh,” you said, trying to shrug him off, “shut up…”
“I mean it,” Mandrake laughed, wrapping the wings of his bat cloak around you, pulling you against his chest. He looked down at you with a soft smile, nuzzling against your burning face. “Any animal would be lucky to have someone as exquisite as you wearing their skin.”
You couldnt help but chuckle and gently push him away, cracking a smile. “Mandrake,” you laughed, now smiling.
He snickered, leaning down to your level again. “Still mad at me?” He asked, his yellow eyes soft and warm as he looked at you, contrary to the freezing cold.
You hummed, turning around to face him, arms wrapping around his neck.
“Mmm,” you hummed, quirking a brow. “Not as much…but you still owe me.”
“Oh?” He smirked. “Do I now?”
“Oh yeah,” you scoffed. “After all, you stole my kill.”
He cringed visibly. “Right…sorry about that,” he said with a sheepish smile. “Not the best call on my part.”
You scoffed, tugging him down. “No, no it wasn’t,” you snorted, and your lips pressed against his.
Yes, it was cold, and yes, you were still annoyed. But you had to admit, standing there in his arms, there was nowhere else you wanted to be.
