Chicago-based Stacee Kalmanovsky’s Rain installation is perfectly placed below a skylight, showing the beauty of glass droplets that really look like rain. Looking up at it in person is an experiment in vision and perception.

Hesitate by Alexa Meade and performance artist Sheila Vand - [video]
The artist’s statement:
Alexa Meade and Sheila Vand have collaborated on a body of work that explores the fluidity of form in relation to time and space. By stripping the subject of depth and dimension, a displacement of identity ensues, demonstrating the power of context over content.
Meade’s signature style of painting portraits on the body is submerged in a canvas of milk, where Vand’s performance is dictated by the opposing forces of fixed shadows and fluid space. Together, the artists compose an expressive identity for each image, but as the milk interacts with the pre-arranged pose, a new identity is formed that must be constantly re-imagined and re-shaped in the moment. As the paint seeps away into the milk, Vand’s performance must continually shift to accommodate its new context and form while Meade’s photography must capture the ephemeral moments before they de-materialize. The result is an ever-evolving, time-based portrait that includes every layer of the process within each consecutive frame. Each new visual identity is a product of the versions that came before.
The surface of the milk intersects Vand’s body at an uneven and unusual plane, creating a sense of movement and depth beneath her compressed form. This play on dimensionality in the picture plane evokes an optical illusion that activates the viewer’s experience by challenging their common perceptions. The identifiable becomes ineffable, giving the flat photography of the painted three-dimensional space an unsettling tone. By blending the borders between the subject and its surroundings, identity is muted and we’re left with the distilled nuances that shape the space.

"While the pictures describe the vulnerability of our aging, corporeal selves, they also describe the sensual and sexual pleasures to be had in life, seemingly right next to us, just for the asking—kissing, stroking, touching, embracing, hugging, eating, bathing, enjoying sex.
The formation of female identity is another of the book’s themes. We see it in the Snow-White–red lips of Carucci’s mother, the body-binding panty hose, the hooks of a bra across her mother’s back, the bleach cream erasing the dark hair of Carucci’s stomach, a shaved armpit, the plucking (ouch!) of a nipple hair, and a woman’s upper eyelashes being bent by an eyelash curler branded with the name “Revlon”—branding being a fair description of the activities woman engage in to be considered adequately female."

a lot of Angela Strassheims photographed have a very rigid, cold feeling to them and some of the photos from her Family Study remind me of my own family and not so much the subjects but the way their shot. i've been contemplating the subjects that everyone else seems to be working on and i dont know yet that i'm completely interested in delving into the relationship with my parents or where i'm from.
Dear Stranger, by Shizuka Yokomizo
For this 1998-2000 series of portraits, photographer Shizuka Yokomizo left several anonymous letters on the doorsteps of random ground floor apartments that read:
“Dear Stranger,
I am an artist working on a photographic project which involves people I do not know…. I would like to take a photograph of you standing in your front room from the street in the evening.”
The letter specified a certain ten-minute period during which the artist would approach, take the picture, and slip back into the darkness. She would only reveal her identity once her subjects received a print and contact information (so that they could let her know if they objected to their portrait being exhibited).
Yokomizo made sure that when the photos were taken, the light would be too dark outside to see her — it would only allow her subjects to see their own reflections in the window they were looking out of.
Liu Bolin chooses a background before covering himself in paint to ensure he matches it perfectly.So when he is snapped standing against that backdrop, it can be almost impossible to tell he is there.

An installation which explores ideas of the infinite. Constructed out of 150 suspended lights, and mirrored walls which surround a pool of water. The piece creates a space that individual viewers are invited to “transcend their sense of self”.
