(ooc: And that will do it for now. I’ll try to be on Lightning more frequently from now on, but I can’t make any promises. xD I’ll answer any replies I get within the next day or so.)
“That. Was. SO COOL!” Lightning gushed. It wasn’t like him to be so easily impressed, but that display was just... Well, simply put, amazing. He hadn’t seen anything like it before! He had to see it again.
“Do it again! You simply must do it again!”
“Lightning is bored. Care to help me be rid of this problem?”
She'd seen some odd humans in her day; still, none who looked quite like this guy. The armour, the hair... all decidedly unusual. Still, to a dog like her, that was unimportant. The only thing about him that mattered to Angel was that he had food; and whether he was willing to share it with a starving stray. Padding closer, she silently turned her pleading gaze in his direction. Whether or not he'd take pity on her, she hadn't a clue; but at this point, she was desperate enough to chance it.
Since Lightning had no real business to attend to at the moment, he had taken the opportunity to spend some time by himself. Of course, there was only so much amusement that Lightning could get out of a day when he was on his own. He’d opted to stop by a hot dog vendor and purchased a couple of the sausages for his meal. At present, the young Titan was eating one while seated at a nearby bench. The other was beside him in one of those paper trays just waiting to be eaten.
Just as Lightning was nearly finished with the first hot dog, he spotted Angel approaching him. Now, Lightning normally didn’t pay much attention to the stray animals that lived around the area. He either was too busy with Titan duties or off having fun somewhere to really remember that the animals were around. This one was fairly small and young. Honestly, it was a curiosity to the Titan. Where had she come from?
Before he addressed any of his thoughts, Lightning took a quick look around to make sure that he was really the only one present. Apart from the hot dog vendor some distance away, no one else was around for Angel to have potentially begged from. Therefore, there was no one around to see Lightning potentially speaking to her. Of course, that latter thought was just ridiculous. Dogs didn’t talk back when they were spoken to. Therefore, Angel most certainly couldn’t. That was Lightning’s train of thought, anyway.
That didn’t stop him from at least addressing her.
“Greetings, little one,” Lightning said. “You’ve come looking for something from me, haven’t you.”
Lightning didn’t have to be a genius to guess what Angel might have wanted from him. He had food, she looked as though she had no owner or anyone to take care of her, and so it was easy to put two and two together.
talentcd:
That, she most definitely had.
It was with the best wide-eyed begging expression that she could muster that Angel looked up at the adolescent. He seemed alright with her presence - or, at the very least, not as if he’d kick her or shoo her away - but even so, there was a marked caution to the small canine’s manner.
She knew better than most dogs that not all humans were what they appeared to be.
Stopping before Lightning, the little female settled to her rear. Still ready, of course, to leap to her paws and dart back at a moment’s notice if need be; but also to make clear as she could what her intentions were.
She didn’t speak, of course. It was anyone’s guess whether or not he’d understand her, even if she did; but if that was the case, she didn’t want his surprise to deprive her of a potential meal.
And, what was the trick that humans liked…?
Carefully, Angel raised both her forepaws off the ground and into a begging posture, as she looked up at the youth - or, more accurately, at his hot dog -, her silent request very clear.
He just watched to see what Angel would do. Since he didn’t anticipate her being able to speak, he wasn’t waiting for that to happen at all. Instead, he wanted to see just what she would do to win what she wanted. What he got wasn’t too surprising. The little fluffy canine had risen into a begging position, and this did actually succeed in making the elemental Titan smile a bit. She clearly knew how to get what she wanted.
“Heh... All right, all right. I probably would not have eaten both of these myself anyway,” Lightning said. He took one of the two sausages he had gotten and prepared to give it to Angel. Would she be able to eat the whole thing in one go? Judging from her skinny frame, he felt like it was easy enough to answer that she probably would. So, he set the sausage down so Angel could have it and waited to see what would happen.
Though really, he felt like he had a pretty good idea of what would happen already.
(ooc: Just on to do a couple of quick replies. Maybe do an open starter or two in case anyone wants one. Then I have to head back to Vanellope. Sorry for my abundant leaps in activity here. xD; I’m afraid Lightning doesn’t get quite as much attention as Vanellope does.)
(ooc: Just wanted to quickly come on to make a slight edit to my layout. Okay, back to Vanellope.)
(ooc: Might come back to Lightning later. For now, going back to Vanellope.)
Flash in the Pan
Brilliant. Completely brilliant, Lightning. You let yourself get so wrapped up in trying to make Slade pay that you nearly lost yourself to that anger! You’re never going to hear the end of it if anyone finds out.
These had been Lightning’s thoughts as he’d gone from his encounter with Slade to looking for some place to get his injuries attended to. For the most part it was bruises and bumps that he was dealing with. The only real issue was his arm, which was hurting considerably and far too much of a hinderance as far as doing much went. He realized it was probably broken in at least one place. Lightning wasn’t foolish enough to think that he could hide that fact, either. Sooner or later someone was going to realize it, too, and he hoped it wouldn’t be too soon.
But what was he meant to do now? He’d just up and left Slade after presumably injuring him to some degree with his electricity, but where did that leave him? What if his opponent ended up coming after him again? Actually, that probably wouldn’t happen. Lightning knew how Slade worked; the man would probably just torment him from the shadows one way or another.
Why had he decided to go after him? It would have been far better for the young Titan if he’d just stayed where he was and let go of that lingering desire. Too late now, though. He had to deal with whatever would come when someone he knew found him.
That is, of course, if anyone came looking for him at all. Lightning knew that he had been absent from his adopted family’s lives for quite some time. Would they even have missed him? Thunder certainly would, but he was his brother. Who could say if Icarus or any of the others would even realize he was gone?
Well, there was nothing for it but to hope that maybe he’d have a few moments of peace before someone questioned him. Lightning had finally made it to a little spot some distance away from where he had fought Slade, and for the most part he felt safe. It was only a matter of time before he was found, though. Then the individual who found him would want to treat his wounds to the best of their ability, and that would lead to asking what had happened.
Those thoughts continued to loop in Lightning’s head so frequently that he didn’t even realize if someone had approached or not.

Surrender Yourself to Vengeance
With his sights focused wholly on his desire to pay Slade back for what he had done, Lightning had set out from the tower without a second thought. Leaving Mjolnir behind probably would come back to bite him in the ass, he realized, but that was the least of his worries. She would be safer back at the tower anyway. That way, there would be no chance that she could get hurt. The little creature could worry about him all she liked, but that was about it.
This was Lightning’s mission. Since he didn’t want anyone else to get hurt while he attempted to get back at the man that had turned him against his brother, he had no qualms with leaving everyone in the dark. The decision to do so wasn’t the brightest, granted, but he didn’t care. As long as he was the only one who potentially got hurt, he wouldn’t have minded.
Like a bolt from the blue, Lightning had streaked through the sky and toward his destination. Honestly, he hadn’t the slightest idea of what the place he was going to was even like. All Lightning knew for sure was that Slade was there. He had to be! If he wasn’t then all of his hard work would have been for nothing. There was no way that he would give up everything he had worked for. Not now that he was so close. So he kept flying faster and faster until he actually could see the island in question. The darkness all around him made it difficult to see, but the electricity streaking behind him did allow him to see just a little bit. Just as he had thought, the island in question looked either deserted or just uninhabited.
Good. It meant that it would just be the two of them. Just how he wanted it.
Lightning flew down to the island and allowed the electricity to disappear from around him as soon as he was close enough to touch the ground. He approached the building ahead of him, fists clenched at his sides all the while, and glanced around briefly. There was nothing to really indicate that anyone was present currently, which might have been good, but he didn’t like it. How long had Slade been here, and for what purpose? Regaining his strength, perhaps? Or was there something else...?
Best not to think about it, Lightning decided. He shook his head and continued walking toward the building. The door marking the entrance point wasn’t even closed, he noted, but his desire to tie up this loose end made him not think too hard about it. The Titan just went straight through the opening and headed further inside. For a long time, silence followed and was only punctuated by his footsteps. The silence was far too uncomfortable, but again Lightning didn’t pay it any mind.
His focus was wholly on his mission. Just as it should have been.
Time passed, and soon enough Lightning reached a room that seemed to hold promise. The room itself was quite large and almost made it seem as though the building had been some kind of warehouse at some point. Strange, but it was nothing Lightning would have been interested in. What he was interested in was whether or not Slade was even around. Just as Lightning was starting to really adjust to the darkness, though, light suddenly flooded the room. This caused the lithe Titan to cringe and shield his eyes until an all too familiar voice reached his ears.
“Hello, Lightning.”
As his eyes adjusted again, Lightning looked up and spotted a familiar masked man just ahead of him. The same cool, collected voice made Lightning’s skin crawl and caused sparks to flicker around his body as the long pent up anger started to boil at the surface. Slade... He was right there in front of him. Mocking him with how tantalizingly close he was!
“YOU,” Lightning growled. “Do not greet me as though we are allies, you fiend! You made Lightning do terrible things! You made me fight my own brother!”
“Ah, but you did that yourself. You attacked that little girl all on your own, too. I didn’t make you do anything,” Slade pointed out. That was a sore spot in Lightning, too, because the Titan cringed visibly when Slade brought it up. Of course, Lightning wouldn’t give him that satisfaction for too long. He’d long since tired of the man holding this power over him.
“Shut up! I have no time for this meaningless banter. I came to make you pay for what you made my brother and I endure. Starting now!”
Lightning gave no further warning. His desire to see this mission through to the end had blinded him to all rational thought, for he blindly started firing his electricity in Slade’s direction and hoped for the best. Doing so did no good, though. Every time Lightning tried to strike him, Slade would move aside and seemed to be moving ever closer to the Titan with every passing moment.
“You’ve grown rusty, my apprentice,” Slade said. “I taught you better than this, you know.”
“I am not your apprentice!” Lightning shouted. He continued to fire rapid bursts of his power at Slade, only to get more and more enraged as the man continued to move around. He wasn’t getting any opportunities to actually hit him! If things kept up like this, then... No! Lightning refused to think like that. He would beat Slade and finally make peace with this portion of his past.
He would make up for turning against Thunder... The other Titans... Everyone.
Then, Slade struck. Lightning hadn’t even been paying attention to how close his foe had gotten, so he was caught off guard when the masked man simply punched him in the gut. The force knocked Lightning back and put an end to his seemingly endless stream of electric attacks. Before he even had a proper chance to respond, though, Slade was right back in his face and kicking the Titan down onto the floor.
Precious seconds ticked by and left Lightning open to an attack. Slade was looming over him, prepared to slam his foot down on the Titan’s stomach, but Lightning still had enough sense to attack when he had the chance. Just as Slade was about to attack again, Lightning blasted the man with his namesake power. Much to Lightning’s delight, Slade seemed to be wounded by the blast and was knocked back. A sly smirk formed on Lightning’s face as he got up to try and investigate.
“Seems you’ve forgotten things too,” Lightning stated. Arrogance was slipping into his demeanor, but he hardly cared. He was finally getting his opportunity to pay Slade back for what he had caused to happen, and that was all that mattered to him. However, his arrogance was getting the better of him. The decision to try and see what sort of damage Slade had taken led to him putting himself right in danger’s path again. Slade was by no means down and out, and somehow Lightning had assumed he would just take the blast and that would be the end of it. No, the man was able to get up quickly and catch Lightning off guard with another punch. This time, the hit connected with Lightning’s face and caused him to step back a couple of paces.
“Still as arrogant as always, I see,” Slade said. “Never assume your opponent is down just because you’ve hit him. It will end badly.”
Slade didn’t even give Lightning the chance to properly respond. What followed was a flurry of attacks, non of which Lightning could avoid, that resulted in injuries on Lightning’s end. When Lightning did have the chance to respond, it was always with electric based attacks. The fight quickly boiled down to punches, kicks, and general physical combat. It dragged on and on for several minutes, and the longer the fight went on the more blinded Lightning became. He was so focused on his desire that he wasn’t thinking properly.
...And it led to him effectively getting his ass kicked.
When Lightning did get a chance to break away from Slade, which was after many attacks were exchanged between the pair of them, the Titan looked to be a mess. His body appeared bruised and battered, and he himself appeared worn out from the excursion. Sparks were also flickering from around his body uncontrollably and his eyes were clouded by blind fury. Slade, on the other hand, still appeared cool and collected.
No... He couldn’t fail now! Not when he was this close! Lightning had to see this through! He had to finally get his vengeance!
Without thinking, Lightning flew at Slade in one last ditch effort to try and get him with electricity. Unfortunately for him, Slade was prepared to deal with this little attempt. He moved out of the way just in time, much to Lightning’s horror, and when the Titan came to a stop Slade was able to make his move.
By the time Lightning was able to look to see where Slade had gone, the man had moved to tackle Lightning to the floor. He succeeded in pinning him down and grabbed Lightning’s arm to hold behind his back. The result was a great deal of pain for the elemental, which he tried to contain as best he could.
“You’re a fool, Lightning,” Slade said. “You only came here on some foolhardy assumption that taking me down here would allow you to move on from what you did. It won’t change that you turned against the Titans, that you fought your brother, or that you worked for me. Even if you do manage to defeat me here you’ll still carry the guilt of what you did. And I’ll enjoy every second of watching you squirm because of it.”
With every second that passed, Slade forced Lightning’s arm into an increasingly uncomfortable position. Pain seized Lightning and he was having to fight himself to keep from giving in to how much he was hurting. Sparks surged around him, and as something in his arm snapped a sort of switch was flicked. A powerful surge of electricity came from Lightning and struck Slade, forcing the man to let go of his opponent as pain seized him. As Slade surrendered to his pain, Lightning did as well and the pair’s cries of agony mingled for a moment.
...Then, the electricity ceased.
Lightning forced himself to his feet and stared at Slade, paying no mind to the injuries he had been dealt. As he looked Slade over, the weight of what he had done seemed to sink in at last. He'd let his desire to get back at Slade take over him completely. At first it had been to make peace with his past, but the second he’d seen Slade he had lost that aspect. It had simply been about pounding Slade into the ground just to make him suffer.
It was wrong. So very wrong. He had gotten back at Slade, yes, but at what cost?
He didn’t wait to see if Slade would get up from the ground. Whether or not Slade was conscious didn’t matter to Lightning anymore. He just had to get out of the building and to someplace safe. So, in spite of the pain in Lightning’s arm, he bolted from the building and into the night once more. He didn’t even know where he was going and wasn’t terribly concerned with what would happen now that he had openly attacked Slade. All that mattered was getting away.
He’d have a lot to think about while he recovered from his injuries.
(ooc: Also, icon change. Because I can. >:D)
Tying Up Loose Ends
Ever since the mission to bring Orcus back, Lightning had been left to his own devices. As soon as he had situated himself back in the life of a Titan, he’d thrown himself into a sort of personal mission. There was a part of his past that he couldn’t let go of yet. What he had done to Thunder and the others had been forgiven, he knew that well enough, but Lightning still couldn’t settle down. He had a loose end to tie up whether anyone else liked it or not.
For months, Lightning had been trying his hardest to track down one individual in particular. This had been done while also handling missions and patrols, so balancing the tasks had proven a bit difficult at first. Once he figured out how to distribute his attention, though, it worked itself out. The hardest part, Lightning discovered as the months crawled by, was finding a lead.
What had happened to his target after that ‘Phantom’ had shown up?
It had been a question that plagued him for far too long, and it had bothered him. He remembered the Phantom, and the flash of light that had engulfed his target, but then there was just the Phantom. Needless to say, Lightning found the situation infuriating. How was he meant to give anyone a piece of his mind if he didn’t even know whether or not they were alive? How?
Well, one way or another he was going to do it. Lightning would find Slade and make him feel the pain he had felt when he’d been made to fight Thunder. To some, this was a mission that should have just been forgotten so Lightning could get on with his life. He couldn’t just let it go, though. He had to make peace with this part of his past before he could move on with his life. So, the Titan had thrown himself into his mission. There was no convincing him to put an end to it, either. For one thing, none of the other Titans knew exactly what it was that Lightning was trying to do. For another, Thunder wasn’t around to keep tabs on him. As long as Thunder wasn’t around and the others didn’t question him, Lightning would be fine.
Late one night, though, Lightning finally hit upon something. He had been staying up and working on the tower computers, hoping beyond hope that something might turn up, when a blip finally appeared on the screen. The lithe Titan had been distracting himself momentarily with his Blitzle, Mjolnir, when the sound alerted him of something happening. In quick, hasty movements, Lightning set Mjolnir back onto the floor and turned his attention to the giant screen in front of him.
“So that’s where you’ve been,” Lightning growled. The flashing light on the screen that indicated his target’s presence was settled in a distant location. One that, to anyone else, would have appeared to be either abandoned or just too small to inhabit. His gaze flicked to Mjolnir before he spoke again.
“If anyone asks,” he told her as he stood up, “tell them not to worry. I will be back.” Lightning’s expression hardened into a look of determination. After all this time, he finally was going to put an end to this. There was nothing to stop him now.
“You’re mine... Slade.”
