Things typically made for women (ex. high heels, bikinis, mini skirts) are designed to be impractical and humiliating btw. I don't think most people realize how demeaning they look, because we are so used to seeing them on women. We are so used to seeing women in the tiny micro thongs at the beach, having to be careful not to move around too much so that they don't accidentally flash everyone. All while men get to wear the comfortable, covering shorts, that allow them to move as much as they want, climb up rocks, and run without having to double-check whether their fucking balls are hanging out. I remember arguing with this trans-identified female before I was full-on gender-critical. I had asked her why it wasn’t enough for her to just express herself however she wanted. As in, why wasn’t it enough for her to cut off her hair, wear masculine clothing, go by a masculine name, etc. Why did she have to go one step further and misogynistically claim that the aforementioned characteristics meant she was no longer a woman? Because as she had described it, gender dysphoria was indeed an issue of self-expression first and foremost—not an issue of linguistics. 

She responded by saying that even if she self-expressed in a masculine manner, being called a woman would still give her dysphoria due to the stereotype of women being feminine. Essentially, it bothered her that others would associate the word woman with femininity. So then I asked how we would ever deconstruct those associations if masculine women like herself continued to deny their womanhood, and continued to insist that their masculinity meant they were actually men. She never responded after that.

What was most intriguing to me, is that she had no issue acknowledging that her sex was female. With that in mind, I had attempted to explain that whether she called herself a transgender man or a gender-non-conforming woman, in most people’s minds that simply translated to being a masculine female. And again, if she had no issue acknowledging that she was a masculine female, then why couldn’t she just as easily acknowledge that she was a masculine woman? Round and round the questions went.

We need more teachers to shed light on the trends they’re seeing in young girls, good or bad.

A teacher on here said that in her school, girls as young as eleven are now using anti-aging skincare products. Another teacher said half the girls in her class now identify as trans. And I’ve seen multiple teachers talk about how girls are outperforming boys across the board, to a ridiculous degree.

I’m very curious to know what else teachers are noticing.

If you acknowledge that gender is a social construct, you must also acknowledge that your gender identities are entirely contingent on that social construct.

In other words, your gender identities are also socially constructed—they’re not innate characteristics the way being female, black, homosexual, or disabled are innate characteristics that exist independently of any social customs or theories.

So no, trans-identified people have not always existed and will not always exist. Trans-identified people have only existed and will only exist so long as the social construct of gender exists. This is like claiming Christians have always existed and will always exist, when in reality Christians have only existed and will only exist so long as the concept of Christianity exists.

Furthermore, if you acknowledge that gender is an oppressive social construct that ascribes feminine expectations to female people and masculine expectations to male people, if you acknowledge that gender is the reason female people were confined to the domestic sphere and denied their most fundamental rights, if you acknowledge that gender is a system created to reinforce female subjugation and male domination and not just a fun, quirky little way to express yourself, then it’s not hard to comprehend that any ideology which hinges on the continued existence of this sexist social construct is inherently regressive and harmful.

Something that’s crazy about me becoming a TERF is that I was actually trying to become a better trans rights activist.

My family are transphobic and I was not. Some of their questions I couldn’t answer. In particular, the famous “What is a woman?” I searched twitter posts and tiktoks and every TRA definition just sounded misogynistic as fuck. Until I kept scrolling and found posts by TERFs that just clicked something in my brain.

I had also always had views of a gender abolitionist. Combining this with my TRA past I even considered if that meant I was non-binary, because I didn’t match with this socialised version of ‘woman’. But I never felt comfortable with a non-binary identity because I am perceived as a woman, I suffer from being a woman, AND SOCIALISED STEREOTYPES ARE NOT WHAT MAKES A WOMAN.

I couldn’t continue debating and defending trans people and gender ideology anymore as all I could hear was myself as a misogynist. I knew the world would be a better place with gender abolition rather than gender liberation. I came to the realisation that gender ideology enforces the socialised gender binary that was designed to oppress women.

Great post. I had a very similar experience. I just genuinely cared about trans issues and wanted to better understand the arguments. I also found myself completely stuck at the question of what gender is, or what it means to be a women. The idea of gender as identity just makes no sense. The idea of it as social roles is misogynistic. I realized it that it was obvious that we are referring to sex. I too had already encountered and sympathized with gender abolitionism, and had wondered if I was non-binary (under the TRA model). It is crazy that we have had the answers this whole time, but the mainstream distorts them to the point that we are moving backwards.
