my hot take on the appeal of adam x fergus is that they’re both objectively awful. 

here are two horrible people in a show full of horrible people, about half of which are 3 blinks away from inflicting grievous bodily harm on all the rest. everyone hates everyone else & it’s almost funny, except. 

except adam & fergus seem to genuinely like each other. in fact, i think they’re the only two characters in the whole show to never actually trade insults. we see them argue just the once, resolve it by calling anybody else incompetent, and then two episodes later adam doesn’t even flinch before planting himself in front of glen & shielding fergus with his body. they gave us two perennial fuck-ups & told us to go ahead & hate them but what i took away instead is that even walking human disasters can share intimacy & affection. 

adam & fergus mean so much to me bc they say: you will be measured & found wanting, and you’ll be loved all the same.

i wish we could expand the definition of characters having a "parent/child relationship" (platonic connotation) to the nastier parts of parenting: the projection, the control, the invasions of privacy, the entitlement, the codependency that sours into mutual bitterness because the relationship is unbreakable and fragile at once. I want to see two unrelated characters have the kind of perversely needy animosity generally reserved for a lonely, angry mother and her kids... i want to see two characters who never once knew each other as kids play out the dynamics of an inheritance of misfortune otherwise reserved by fathers for their children
