“ugh i want a sitcom of them pre-crash” it’s not funny even pre crash. nat has substance abuse issues and blames herself for her dad’s death. lottie is on a carousel of pills and never sees her father, dont mind the kleptomania. jackie and shauna’s friendship is going to end in a big fight, whether it’s because of the cheating or brown or the jealousy or jackie reading the diary that shauna brings with her everywhere. tai is already ruthless and will do anything to win, including keeping van a secret. misty has something deeply wrong with her which is already showing signs (a drowning animal is just there to witness) and will only get worse. travis and javi see the strains of their sibling bond already. shauna and nat and tai and lottie plan allie’s “freezing out” in the first episode the same way they plan the hunts in the wilderness, all with their team captain jackie entirely unaware.

it was always going to end violent and bloody and messy. the wilderness just spend it up by a few years.

This is Lottie’s mental health finally being given the depth and gravity it deserves. Lottie’s mental illness has often been treated as a punchline this season, but this moment finally gives proper weight to how deeply painful, complex, and real it is. This is Lottie’s recognition of what awaits her in the real world: a life of being sedated, controlled, and institutionalized. Lottie knows deep down that she is “unwell.” Lottie is spiraling out there, she’s suffering from intense psychosis and she needs help, but it is also the only time she has ever felt free and authentically herself after years of suppression.

It breaks my heart knowing how right Lottie is here, because the moment she gets back she is locked in a psych ward, heavily medicated, and forced to undergo electroshock therapy instead of getting the help she really needs. And even after she gets out, she will spend the rest of her life being afraid of her own mind, constantly at war with herself.
