1% is the estimate, we believe, for diagnosed DID!
That doesn't count undiagnosed DID, nor does it count OSDD (or other kinds of plural-leaning dissociative disorders), non-disordered systems, plural but not quite a system folks, etc. So yeah, the number is definitely higher when you take into all kinds of plurality and systemhood.
And even if it isn't-- you're right on the money otherwise. Think of all the trans and nonbinary people you know. Guess what. Allegedly, trans and nonbinary people make up 1% of the world population. (That's also higher in reality, let's be serious, but still.)
That's why this "ugh if you were REALLY a system you wouldn't be on social media" or "DID is soooooo rare, you wouldn't ACTUALLY see this many on tiktok" garbage is... well, garbage.
Twitter = 368 million users globally.
If we apply the 1% statistic, that means Twitter has 3.6 million users who are systems. Tumblr, 1.3 million systems. Tiktok, 20 million systems.
The population of Trinidad and Tobago is roughly 1.3 million; the population of Georgia (the country) is 3.6; the population of Chile is around 20 million. For US folks who wanna go by cities? Dallas, Texas, has a population of about 1.3 million. Chicago, Illinois, is only around 2.7 million people-- and LA, California, is a bit over 3.8 million. The largest city in the USA is New York City, New York, and that's only a little over 8 million. To get to 20 million, we have to go with an ENTIRE STATE. The entirety of New York is 19.8 million people. The next largest state is Florida, at a population of 23.3 million.
There are more plural folks on Tiktok than there are people in the entire state of New York.
There are more plural folks on Tiktok than there are people in the Netherlands, in Cambodia, in Cuba, in Sweden, in Hong Kong, in Ireland... Let that sink into your head for a minute. And that's with the lowest estimate.
We're everywhere. And there's a LOT of us.
