We are also raising consciousness about the people’s struggle against police brutality, political repression and corruption. Every 28 Hours: Tamir Rice and Sandra Bland Two recent high profile cases of police murder were Tamir Rice and Sandra Bland. Both cases ended with a non-indictment of any police officers involved. Tamir Rice was killed in a drive-by shooting for carrying a toy gun in an open carry state. The officers responsible, Timothy Loehmann and Frank Garmback, were not indicted by an Ohio jury on December 28th, 2015. A week earlier, Sandra Bland’s murderers were also given a non-indictment. Uprising in Chicago and Minneapolis The Chicago Police Department has unleashed police terrorism on poor black and brown people in Chicago for decades. The Chicago Police are known for torture and police brutality. One recent police killing, Laquan McDonald, sparked a series of city wide protests when the blatant coverup by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and State Attorney Anita Alvarez was brought to the public’s attention. In Minneapolis, the killing of Jamar Clark prompted an occupation of the local police precinct by protesters. This occupation was attacked by police and armed white supremacists, causing mass student walkouts from high schools and universities which united with city wide protests that numbered in the thousands. Protesters have resisted and withstood continued attacks and fought back against these injustices.
