Summary:
Something is very wrong with Ghost.
----------
Soap stares down the scope of his rifle, picking off the rest of the outdoor guards with Price and Gaz before infiltrating the bunker. If the guards call for backup, the sergeants and their captain are royally fucked. Twenty-five downed men later, and the coast appears to be clear.Â
Price stays behind to watch for movement as Soap and Gaz run down the hill to the entrance of the concrete bunker. Once the sergeants reach the door, Gaz uses his heartbeat sensor to check for nearby hostiles. Itâs surprisingly clear at the entrance.
Soap reaches for the door, but Gaz grabs his arm before he can open it.Â
âHang on, Tav. The lack of bodies is suspiciousâsomethingâs up,â he whispers. âLetâs snake a cam through first. Door could be rigged.â
Shite, heâs right. Reckless fuckin numpty. Whitâre ye thinkin? Couldâve blown the both o ye up wi that behaviour. Gaz places the snake cam at the base of the door as Soap takes a look.
Nothing.
âLooks clear,â Soap whispers. He opens the door. Unlocked. What the fuck? Soap and Gaz step into the hallway. Itâs completely deserted. Soapâs gut twists. He glances over to Gaz, whose expression matches Soapâs concern.Â
Gaz keys the mic on his radio, âCaptain, somethingâs wrong. Itâs too quiet. We need you down here.â
âCopy, Gaz. Still appears clear up here. Heading your way now,â Price replies.Â
The men begin sweeping the rooms. No sign of the slimy mafia gits or Ghost. Fuckfuckfuckfuck. Are they too late? Did they catch on somehow? Soapâs heart begins to thump harder. He sneaks into the next room, finally spotting a guard. He slices the manâs throat, blood spattering across a window.Â
âOh shit,â Soap whispers. Itâs a viewing room. The room on the other side contains a huge light shining directly onto an ancient dental chair caked in blood and vomit. Medical supplies lay scattered across the floor. Fuckin hell.
âSoap? You good mate?â Gaz steps into the room, freezing at the sight of the interrogation room. âBloody hell,â he whispers.
âWhat the fuck did they do to him?â Soap hisses.Â
Gaz squeezes Soapâs shoulder. âWell, we arenât going to make any progress by staying here. Câmon Tav, we should probably check the other rooms.â
Before they can turn around, an alarm sounds.Â
âBoys, weâve got a problem. Someone found the bodies.â Priceâs voice comes in through the radio. Shite. Of course it gets worse. The captain continues, âGaz, youâre on me. Weâre going to prep for exfil. Soap, there are only a few rooms left. Iâm trusting you to get Simon out of here.â
âYes sir,â Soap replies.
Gaz and Price run towards the exit to defend the exfil vehicle while Soap clears the last few rooms. He guns down the few men he spots before reaching the end of the hall.
Soap runs into the final room, spotting three men. Two men in labcoats and⊠Steamin bloody fucking Jesus. Itâs Simon. Soap grabs his pistol, slotting the two scientist-looking men before rushing over to his lieutenant.Â
Shackles chain Ghostâs arms above his head and to the wall. His head hangs low. His clothes are completely missing save for his trousers. Fuck, even his mask is missing. Strawberry blonde curls darkened and matted with sweat plaster his head. Ghost doesnât even seem to acknowledge the bodies dropping right in front of him. âLT?â Soap slowly walks closer to his lieutenant. No reaction. âGhost..?â Still nothing. His breathing comes in slow and deep. Thatâs a good sign at least. Soap kneels down to meet Ghostâs eye level. He doesnât look up.Â
âGhostâSimon itâs me. Itâs Johnny. Can you hear me, love?â Soap desperately attempts to coax Ghost to just look at him. Ghost blinks slowly, but doesnât move.
âJohnny,â Ghost whispers. A response.Â
âYes, yes itâs me, LT! Iâm gonnae get you out of here, but I have to touch ye. Letâs get these chains off of ye.â Soap turns to grab the set of keys off of one of the bodies.
âLetâs⊠get these chains⊠off⊠of youâŠâ Ghost slowly echoes Soap.
âWhat?â Soap turns around. Ghost doesnât react. âGhost? Ahâm gonnae have to touch ye.âÂ
Again, Ghost slowly echoes Soap in broken Scots, but doesnât move. His face remains flat. Soap unlocks the shackles, expecting Ghostâs arms to fall.Â
For a couple seconds, they donât. Then, slowly, the muscles release and his arms fall to his sides. His head still hangs low. What the fuck?
Priceâs voice suddenly comes through the radio. âSoap, we need to leave. Now. Whatâs your status, Sergeant?âÂ
âSimon, we need to leave. Can ye walk?âÂ
Soap attempts to help Ghost stand, only to receive a hard kick to the shin.Â
âFuckin hellâAhâm not gonnae hurt ye, but we need to go. Câmon, big man.â This time, Ghost allows Soap to help him up. His body is unnaturally warm. Shite, does he have a fever?Â
At a snailâs pace, they make it to the doorway. Ghost barely acknowledges the movement.
âSergeant. Status,â Price repeats through the radio.Â
âCaptain, I found Ghost, but somethingâs wrong. Heâs awake but barely responsiveâkeeps repeating my words back to me.â Soap replies. âWeâre going to need assistanceâand a fresh set of clothes. Bastards completely stripped him down tae his breeks.â
Price sighs through the radio, âFuck. Copy, Sergeant. Iâm heading back down, but prepare for exfil to be hot.â
âSolid copy, Captain.â Soap continues down the hallway, practically dragging Ghost along.
Suddenly, an explosion rings through the bunker. The men are knocked off of their feet.
âNo, no, no, steaminâ fuckinâ shite! Ghost, we need to go! Are ye hâ?â Before he can finish the sentence, the ceiling collapses on top of them. Soap pushes the rubble off himself. The cold air bites at Soapâs cheeks. He canât see Ghost. The man had no protection. Heâs probably injured and freezing now.
Finally, he spots Ghostâs hair under a pile of rubble. Soap pulls his lieutenant out, only to spot a nasty gash along his right leg. âFuck, okay. We need to make it to exfil, then we can patch ye up, ok LT?â Soap goes to grab Ghost again, but Ghostâs body refuses to move. Fuuuuuck. Soap hears the gunfire from outside the bunker growing increasingly louder. âGhost, we need tae move. Câmon LT!â
âSoap, Ghost!â Price runs down the crumbling ruins of the hallway, freezing for just a moment when he spots the state of their lieutenant. He looks him up and down, not allowing his composure to slip. âRight. Simon, we are moving. On your feet, Lieutenant.â Somehow, Ghostâs body seems to obey. âSoap, grab his right side. Weâre going to need to carry him.â
The addition of Priceâs assistance makes the dash to the exit significantly faster. They reach the bunker entrance, where Gaz has parked the exfil vehicle.Â
Soap and Price haul Ghost into the back seat, Price slamming the door shut before taking shotgun.
âGaz, floor it!â Price yells as he returns fire through the window. Soap hastily grabs the medkit and works to clean and wrap Ghostâs wound. Once again, he doesnât react, though his body begins to shiverâeither from the cold or the fever, Soap isnât sure.Â
As the bunker slowly disappears into the distance, Soap attempts to coax his lieutenant into a conversation. He tries to joke, to tease, to lean heavily into his accent, anything that would typically result in a reaction.Â
Nothing.
Ghost stares down at the floorboard, face completely flat, as if the rest of the world doesnât exist. Now that Soap has a better look, he realizes that Ghostâs face and body are covered in punching bruisesâsome are days old, while others seem fresh.
Eventually, the men reach the safehouse. Price guides Ghost into the bathroom to dress the large man. Soap follows to assist, but Price shoos him off. He makes his way to the couch, where Gaz sits. They stay in complete silence for a few minutes.Â
âThis is all my fault," Soap whispers.
âWhat? No, Tav, donât do that. Donât blame yourself. None of this is your fault,â Gaz grabs Soapâs hand.
âYes it is, Kyle,â Soap starts to bubble over. âIf I had just paid more attention, I couldâve gotten him out of there in time. If I hadnae tripped on a fuckinâ tree branch and fuckinâ rolled ma ankle, Ah could've gotten back tae him.â
âWoah, mate, slow downââ Gaz starts.
Soap continues, each sentence faster and louder. âIf Ah'd worn the proper gear, Ah wouldnae've gotten ill and we could've gotten tae him sooner. If Ah stayed in the buildinâ, Ah could've helped him fecht aff the bloody wankers. If Ah had shut the fuck up an noâ mentioned Christmas, he wouldnae hae been distracted.â Soapâs voice breaks and his eyes begin to prickle.Â
âTavâŠâ Gaz rubs his thumb over Soapâs hand.
âAhâm such a fuckinâ disgrace, Gaz. Always fuck everythinâ up. Look whit Ahâve done noo. Ma mistakes hae fuckinâ broken Simon.â Soap goes to wipe his face, but Gaz pulls him into a hug. Soapâs failing bravado shatters, and he cries silently into Gazâs shoulder.
âItâs alright, Tav,â Gaz whispers as he rubs Soapâs back. âYou did everything you could. Itâs not your fault. Base should have notified us about Ghostâs files being stolen the moment it happened. Look at me, Tav.â Soap looks. âYou are not a disgrace. You do not fuck everything up. You did not break Ghost.âÂ
Before Soap can reply, Price walks into the room. Soap quickly wipes his eyes, praying that his captain did not just see him greeting like a fucking bairn.
âCaptain, whatâs wrong with him?â Gaz asks.
Price stays silent for a moment. âI donât know, Kyle. Iâve never seen him like this.â
That hits. Price has seen Ghost at his absolute worst, and even he doesnât know whatâs wrong.Â
âSoap, you alright son?â God damn it, Price sees it. Soap doesnât want to say no, but he canât bring himself to lie to his captain right now. Soap feels like sobbing all over again.
âWill⊠will he be okay?â He asks instead. Priceâs mustache shiftsâhe fucking knows Soap is avoiding the question.
âYes, I think he will be,â Price replies, turning his head to look at the bedroom where Simon stands at the edge of the bed, now donning a fresh pair of sweats and a black balaclava, staring into nothing. Price looks back at Soap, âGo check on him, son. He could benefit from the company of his favourite sergeant.âÂ
Gaz scoffs, lightly punching Soapâs shoulder, âGo get âem, Tav.â
Soap complies, walking towards the open bedroom door. Ghost doesnât react.
âUm⊠Ahâm just gonnae⊠shut this door. Give us some privacy. That alright, mate?â Ghost doesnât respond, but his eyes flicker over to meet his gaze. Acknowledgement. Soap shuts the door before turning back to Ghost. God, he looks so tired. His body shivers slightly. He definitely has a fever.Â
âYe want tae sit down, love?â Ghost doesnât move. Soap really wants to take a look at his leg, but he knows better than to touch his lieutenant right now. Instead, he sits on the bed and starts to talk.
âAhâm so sorry, Ghost,â he starts, âThis is all my fault. Ah shouldâve been more cautious. Ah shouldâve paid more attention to the cams. Ye shouldnaeâve been capturedâŠâ Ghost doesnât respond, so Soap just keeps going. âAh dinnae even ken if yeâre hearinâ me right noo, but Ah wish ye would just say somethinâ.â Eventually, once heâs run out of apologies, he just starts talking about everything and nothing. About the snow. About his journal. About how bored he felt while sick. About Gaz cheating in UNO. About how worried he was and how useless he felt.
After around ten minutes of Soapâs rambling, Ghost gasps, eyes going wide. His knees buckle, and he collapses onto the floor. Hard. He winces at his leg.
âSimon?!â Soap shoots down to Ghost, who is gasping on his hands and knees. He tears off his mask, covering his ears with his palms. He starts to choke on his own breaths. His trembling increases. His eyes are wide and unfocused. Heâs having a panic attack. Soap has seen this before.Â
âJohnny, Iââ Simon gags.Â
âWoah woah, hey, Simon! Just breathe, love. Ahâve got ye. Dinnae try tae talk. Can ye look at me?â Soap whispers.Â
Simon triesâhe really doesâbut his gaze flutters back into the middle distance. He clutches at the sides of his hair with his fists. Slowly, like heâs relearning how to speak, Simon struggles through the gasps, âKilled them⊠Johnny.â
âWhat?â Soap doesnât like the sound of this.Â
âTheyâre dead⊠my fault.âÂ
âWho, love? Whoâs deaâoh,â Before Soap can finish the question, he realizes. Of course he blames himself. Bastard torturers probably used his familyâs deaths to get to the poor lad. Simonâs breathing hitches as he covers his face with his hands, nails digging into the top of his forehead. Heâs going to hurt himself like this. Slowly and methodically, Soap pries Simonâs hands from his head and just holds them.Â
âNo, love. You didnae kill them, love. It isnae yer fault.â Soap ignores the hypocritical feeling he gets while trying to convince Simon not to blame himself. Suddenly, Simon folds himself into Soap. The gasps turn into soft, soundless sobs. Thatâs new. Simon doesnât cry.Â
To be completely honest, Soap didnât know he could.
Soap cups the back of Simonâs neck with his hand, using the other to hold Simonâs hand over Soapâs own heart.
âMo chridhe,â Soap whispers. He rubs the back of Simonâs neck while humming a GĂ idhlig lullaby his ma used to sing to him and his sisters on stormy nights.Â
After a few minutes, Simonâs sobs slow and his breathing starts to level itself out. âSorry. Fuck, sorry. âM sorry, Johnny,â he repeats himself a few more times, pain radiating from his chest with every apology.Â
âShhh, yeâre alright, LT. You dinnae need tae apologize. Ahâve got ye,â Soap whispers as he firmly squeezes Simon into him. âHowâs yer leg?â
âHurts,â Simon murmurs.Â
âBet it does. Can I take a look?âÂ
âNo.â A pause, âSorryâŠâ It breaks Soapâs heart, the way Simon keeps apologizing. He seems almost childlikeâas if itâs young Simon, innocent and frailâinstead of Soapâs strong, unmovable lieutenant.
âOkay, thatâs fine, love. Dinnae apologize. Can ye eat something for me?â
â...â
âSimon?â
âOk.âÂ
Good. He at least wants to eat. Poor laddie looks like heâs tint ten kilogrammes in just seven days. That canât be good for a man of his size and muscle mass. Soap attempts to get up, but Simon doesnât move.
âSimon, love, I need tae get up,â Soap keeps his voice low. âDo ye want tae come into the kitchen with me?â
âNo.â
âOkay. Iâll grab something for ye. Letâs sit you up on the bed, eh?â Soap practically carries Simon up onto the bed, where he sits with his hands clasped in his lap. He picks up the balaclava from the floor, gently placing it next to Simon in case he needs it. He then opens the door, noticing the way Simon flinches at the creaking sound and sudden increase in light.
âBe right back, ok?â Soap steps out of the room, leaving the door open so that Simon doesnât feel alone. He steps into the kitchen, where Gaz sits, staring down into a cup of coffee. Price smokes a cigar outside. Gaz looks up, spotting Soapâs now tearsoaked shirt.
âBloody hell,â he utters, concern etched into his face. âWas heââ
âShhh, doorâs open,â Soap whispers. âIâm gonnae fix something for him to eatâdonât think he's had anything since before the mission.â
âNeed help?â Gaz stands, ready to assist Soap with whatever he may need.
âHonestly? Yes. Can ye start the kettle?â
The two sergeants work together in silence, Gaz steeping tea for Ghost as Soap cooks a simple rice porridge. Once the tea is ready, the men switch so that Soap can fix the tea the way Ghost likes. Eventually, Price comes back inside, but he doesnât enter the kitchen.
When Soap returns to the bedroom, Ghost is in the same position, save for the balaclava that he put back on. He stares at Soap as he walks in.
âMade you some rice porridgeâthought that might be easy on ye. Oh and some tea. Earl Grey with two sugars and some cream.â Soap hands the bowl to Ghost and sets the mug on the nightstand. Ghost stares at the bowl, hands visibly trembling.Â
âI canât,â he whispers.
âSimon, I need you to try.â
Slowly, Ghost pulls the balaclava just above his nose. Soap watches as he takes a spoonful of the porridge and eats it. He swallows thickly before setting the spoon back in the bowl.
âI canât,â he repeats. âSorry, Johnny.â
âThat shite, eh? You can blame Kyle for thatâbloody bastard mustâve burned it,â Soap jokes.Â
Ghost hangs his head low. âNo, Johnny⊠âS not shite⊠I just⊠canât.â
âDo ye at least want to try to drink somethinâ? I can get you some water if the tea isnât up to par.â
âThe tea is fine... Thank you...â His voice is strained, like visible cracks along the edges. Soap hands him the mug and takes the bowl.
âIâll, uh, just take this back outââ
âNo,â Ghost grasps at Soapâs arm, missing by a fraction. âPlease stay,â he begs. It hurts to hear him like this.
âOkay LT. Iâll stay,â Soap sits back down on the bed, setting the bowl on the nightstand. Ghostâs shivering is getting noticeably stronger. Soap can feel the heat radiating off of the man, too. His feverâs getting worse.
âGhost, let me look at your leg. Please.â
Ghost grunts.
âSimonâŠâ
âFine. Just⊠please donât hurt me,â he replies.
âWasnae planning on it, LT,â Soap smiles, although it doesnât quite reach his eyes. He helps lead Ghost into the bathroom, where the larger man sits on the edge of the tub. He squeezes his eyes shut as Soap pulls his pant leg up.
âIâm going to unwrap this now, okay Ghost?â Soap asks. Ghost nods his head, though he keeps his eyes screwed shut. Soap carefully unwraps the wound, but Ghost still flinches as the dressing peels off his skin. What Soap sees underneath concerns him. âShite, LT. I think this is already infected. Iâm gonnae have to keep this clean until we can get ye back on base and to medical.â Panic flashes across the visible parts of Ghostâs face. His breathing picks up again.
âNo,â he manages.
âNo what, love?â
âNo medical.â
âSimon, ye have tae. This isnae something ye can just will away. Not this time. Ye need antibiotics.â Eventually, Ghost allows Soap to clean the wound and redress it, although he flinches hard at every touch. His breathing never slows down, either. He needs to rest. His bodyâs only going to get worse if he doesnât. Soap places his hand over Ghostâs knee.
âSimon, do you want tae go lie down?â He asks. Ghost nods, eyes still pinched shut. âOkay, okay love. Hang on, let me help you stand.â Before they can make it to the door, Ghost freezes. He turns back to the toilet, rips his mask off, and starts vomiting. Violently. So much for the tea and single bite of porridge.
âOh shite. LT?â Soap crouches down to Ghostâs side. He rubs the larger manâs back as he continues vomiting. Jesus. Is this why he seems to have lost so much weight? Once he stops, Ghost sits on his knees, gasping for air.
âSorry. Sorry. Sorry. Iâm sorry. Iâm sorry,â Simon apologizes over and over again. Before Soap can chastise him for apologizing again, Simon freezes. He crumples to the floor.Â
âSimon?!â His eyes roll back and his body locks up. He lets out a groan as air forces itself out of his body. His lips start to go blue. Simonâs body starts violently convulsing and he starts making gurgling sounds. Nonononono.
âCAPTAIN,â Soap screams. Price and Gaz rush into the room.
âFuck,â Gaz gasps. Price rushes down to the floor.
âPrice IâI donât know what happened. One moment he was fine and now,â Soap feels like he canât breathe. His heart feels like it's going to hammer out of his chest.
âHeâs seizing,â Price checks his watch. âGaz, call Nik for exfil. Now.â
----------
@sgt-nharper asked me to tag them in this chapter, so here you go!
back on my Simon Riley is scared of hospitals bull shit instead of the nikprice week blurb.
anyway, this idea. Simon scared of being in hospital. Hates the whole shebang. Really only stays unless it's Price seated next to him, making sure the Lieutenant has nowhere else to go. Practically ordered to "lie still and let them take care of you, Riley."
Still, the moment he gets an opportunity he'll flee. Quiet and cold. Like a ghost on the wind. Price knows where to find him, his usual hiding spots, most frequented being Price's flat itself. Price never makes him go back. Just makes sure he rests.
Another brutal mission. Another brutal hospital visit for Simon. This time Garrick's on the bed next to himânasty concussion and broken arm that have left him unconscious for about a day.
Price expects an empty bed when he's finally out of the meeting with command. Instead he finds all six-foot-four of his lieutenant hunched over Kyle's side, Kyle's good arm slung around him, face tucked into Simon's shoulder, whole body shaking.
He doesn't move. Not for a long moment.
He watches Simon ease Kyle back down, murmur something low, tuck the sheet in with more care than Price has ever seen him give anything, himself included. Watches him sit back on the edge of his own bed, back to the door, one hand fisted in the sheet.
Price steps forward, slow. Waits until Simon's head tilts, just barely, a sign he's been noticed, before he lets his hand settle on the nape of his neck. Thumb brushing through the short hair there.
"Everything alright, son?"
He keeps his voice down. Simon's shoulders lift in a shrug. Then his head nods. Then it shakes, contradicting itself entirely, and Price sees the exhaustion in every motion.
"He woke up confused. I didn't know where you were, so I justâ" Simon's head drops into his hands.
Price squeezes the back of his neck, gentle. "You stayed."
A sob breaks out of Simon's chest, quiet and strangled, like he fights the way it tears itself free. Price lowers himself onto the bed, Simon folds into him, near boneless, in a way he never does, not even half-asleep, not even concussed himself.
"Shhh." He keeps a hand moving slowly between Simon's shoulder blades. "He's alright. You did good. Easy, now."
He doesn't say anything else. There's nothing else to say, now at least, and Simon's never been one who needs the words.
It takes a while for the shaking to run its course. When it does, Simon peels off him and lies back down facing Kyle, watching the rise and fall of his chest like he's convinced without him watching it may stop, until sleep finally wins the fight. Price stays where he is, seated on the edge of the bed between the two of them, until his own eyes start to lose the fight.
Even then, he only gets up for a lukewarm cup of coffee.
Soap is soooo chronically online. He knows ALL the internet drama. Doomscrolling short form content has made his attention span 10x worse than it already was. Because of his ADHD, he ends up with a lot of stupid vocal stims that started out as memes from his FYP. He constantly references memes and social media brainrotâsome of which even he finds annoying, but it pisses off the older higher ups and that makes it all worth it. Obviously, his favourites are the Scottish memesââhocus pocus thereâs a pizza on yer focus,â âa kilogramme of steel,â âbye bye driver,â etcâŠ
The young recruits absolutely love him for it. Imagine your sergeant not only being the youngest ever to pass SAS selection (cool points), but also having the same stupid sense of humour as you.
Ghost is⊠chronically offline. Yes, he was a teenager in the early to mid 2000s, but he wasnât allowed to touch the computer in the flat. His all boys boarding school didnât even have computers. That meant no MySpace, no chatrooms, and no email. That wasnât a huge deal to little Simonâhe never really saw the need to touch social media. He was too shy to make friends in person, let alone over a computer.
When Ghost joined the military, he saw social media as a liability. His information shouldnât be publicly available for the world to see. It could end up in the wrong hands.
Around the time other major social media platforms were becoming popular, Ghost was captured by Roba. Once again, he had no need for social media.
He finally got Facebook after Tommy and Beth got married to keep up with them. He never posted anything, but he liked seeing pictures of his brother actually happy.
After their deaths, he shut everyone and everything out. Nearly went completely off the grid. The only reason anyone knew he was alive was because Price forced him to stay on base.
Ghost still doesnât use social media.
The only reason he even knows about TikTok is because Johnny constantly sends him downloaded videos of puppies and kittens wrestling alongside the message âus.â
Ghost doesnât exactly get younger slang. He knows some of the original abbreviationsââomg,â âlol,â and âjk,â but the newer stuff is beyond his comprehension.
Ghost watches the new recruits try their hardest to not break when Soap references some stupid video that apparently everyone and their mum has seen. Of course, there are the few outliers who are not at all impressed by Sergeant MacTavishâs ability to turn everything into a bloody joke. So when Ghost hears one of the FNGs complaining about Soap, he listens to see if they say anything that could give Ghost the ability to kick them out for insubordination (he canât do that). Instead, he leaves more confused than before.
âŠ
Soap sits in the mess hall chatting it up with Gaz, when all of the sudden Ghost appears behind him.
âJesus fuck LT, ye scared the shite out of me! Ye need something, love?â
âSoap. What the fuck is toong toong toong sahur?â
Soap: You're the love of my life and my best friend, I would do anything for you.
Ghost: I want you to eat three meals a day and have a decent sleep schedule.
Soap: Absolutely not.

Summary:
Every night, Ghost is forced to relive some of his worst memoriesâGhost digging out of his own grave. His dad beating the shit out of him for breathing too loud while heâs hungover. Soap getting shot and being hunted by Graves in Las Almas. Simonâs failures. It ends with everything going dark as Ghost has another violent seizure.
Ghost has nearly given up on the thought of anyone finding him. Hell, he doesnât even know where he is. These bastards won't break him, though. He just has to wait for the perfect moment to escape. And then heâll kill them all. Thatâs what he did with Roba and his men.
------------------
âThis is bullshit,â Soap grumbles. As he gets up to prep his gear, Price barges through the safehouse entrance, covered in snow and blood that isnât his own.
âWeâve found him,â Price smiles. âSoap, Gaz, get ready. Weâre leaving in thirty.â
...
AKA Ghost has a Bad Time being tortured while the rest of TF141 prepare to rescue their lieutenant
âDo not get worked up, Simon Riley. We have not even started yet,â the tall man states as he slowly and methodically places monitor pads on Ghostâs chest and head. He places a pulse oximeter on his right middle finger. A soft beeping starts as the man turns the heart monitor on. Ghost stares straight ahead at what is surely a two-way mirror, refusing to give the man even an inkling of his attention.
That attempt fails when the man pulls out a medical-grade IV needle. Ghostâs breathing picks up. Fuck, he hates needles. The heart monitor is beeping faster. Simon is slipping through the cracks.
Maybe Ghost canât go through this again.
âScared of needles, Simon Riley?â The man sneers as he holds out Ghostâs arm, tying a tourniquet just above the vein. Ghost tries to fight, to move, to do something, but his body wonât listen. He attempts to brace himself instead. The man cleans the section and inserts the needle. Ghostâs vision goes dark. He feels dizzy and nauseated. The man pulls the needle out, leaving only the plastic catheter in his arm. Ghost might puke.
âSee? I told you not to worry. I am professional, after all.â
Ghost glares at the man, tempted to use the nausea as an excuse to puke on him.
The man ignores Ghost shooting daggers at him with his eyes as he pulls out an IV bag full of some green looking liquid. âThis, Simon Riley, is why we use heart monitor,â the man begins. Why does he always call Ghost by his full name? Why does he keep saying it like that? âThis is memory serum. It targets hippocampus. Brings back worst memories. The only issue is that too much stress can cause seizure. We do not want that. So we monitor. What are your worst memories, Simon Riley?â
The man starts the line, squeezing the bag slightly so that the serum enters his bloodstream faster. It stings as it runs up his arm.
âFUCK!â Simon screams. In his peripheral, he hears the heart monitor beeping faster. He closes his eyes, hoping, noâpraying it doesn't work.
âI hear you had bad time in Mexico, Simon Riley. Maybe we start there,â Ghost can hear the smirk in the manâs voice. Nobody knows about Mexico. Not even Soap. How does this bastard know that? What intel does he have? The man runs his finger down one of the scars on Ghostâs abdomen, tracing where the knife flayed him open all those years ago. Simon opens his eyes. Heâs no longer in Romania. Heâs laying on a gurney, being sliced apart by one of Robaâs men. Someone barks an order in Spanish.
Simon flails and squirms. He squeezes his eyes open and shut. The hallucination stays.
This isnât real. This isnât real. ThisisntrealthisisntrealTHISISNTREAL. He knows it isnât. These men are dead.
So⊠why can he feel every cut?
Simon bites the inside of his cheek hard so he canât scream. He canât do this again.
Simonâs vision warps. He's outside. Itâs midnight. A man stabs a hook through his ribs. Simon screams as the men hang him from the tree. Roba laughs. He watches as the cartel executes his remaining teammates. Fuckfuckfuckfuck. Simon gasps for air. Something feels off. Heâs shaking. Violently. His mind is full of static. His vision blurs. He canât hear anything. Canât see anything. Canât feel anything.
Everything goes dark.
âŠ
Ghost wakes up in a semi-abandoned Soviet-era bunker that feels uncomfortably warm, especially for the middle of fucking December.
His head is swimming and everything fucking aches.
He scans the room, checking for hostiles, abandoned weapons⊠anything that he could use to make his escape. To his right, he spots a downright ancient furnace that isâwait.
No.
Heâs been here before.
This time, though, his body is cuffed to a wheelchair. The IV catheter is still in his arm, connected to a line of saline. This is the fourth day he's woken up like this after seizing from the âmemory serum.â Itâs the fifth day he's woken up in nothing but his boxers. The fifth day heâs had to stare down at his bare skin. His scars.
Every nightâaround 2100, Ghost has deducedâthe tall Romanian man enters, checks his vitals, and asks him a billion medical questions as if he thinks heâs still a doctor. Ghost gets a punch in the face if he doesnât answer. Once the man is satisfied that Ghost wonât keel over, he wheels him into the makeshift interrogation room, chains him to the dental chair, and injects the memory serum into Ghostâs IV.
Ghost looks down and notices that, once again, he's puked on himself. The sickly sweet smell of rotting vomit makes him want to throw up all over again. He hasnât eaten since before the mission, though, so the only thing that would come up is stomach bile.
Ghost has nearly given up on the thought of anyone finding him. Hell, he doesnât even know where he is. These bastards won't break him, though. He already has nightly terrors of these memories. In fact, these sedative induced naps have led to some of the best sleep Ghost has had in a long time. He just has to wait for the perfect moment to escape. And then heâll kill them all. Thatâs what he did with Roba and his men.
He just hopes that they didnât find Soap. He could hear his young sergeant running back to him through the comms after everything went to shit. Ghost never turned his radio off. If the men had been paying any attention, they would have realized.
He doesnât know what they would do to Soap.
After the first nightâs fiasco, Ghost pushed Simon even further down. Locked him in a box and threw away the key. He thought that would helpâthat it would protect himâbut now Ghost is realizing that he feels too. Maybe not as dramatically, but enough to fall into a spiral if he isnât careful. There isnât much he can do to distract himself, either.
So fucking hell, now heâs alone with his thoughts, worrying about whether his sergeant made it out okay or not.
Ghost stares at a spot in the floor, burning a hold into it with his eyes. Itâs been 3 hours since he woke up, meaning itâs probably around 1300.
The tall man barges into the room, unscrews the saline line from Ghostâs IV, and pushes him into the interrogation room. He didnât even stop to check Ghostâs vitals. He seems rushed. Ghost says nothing.
âYou are tough man, Simon Riley, but we need you fast. It is time for more⊠drastic measure,â the man speaks as he starts the line. The familiar burn prickles up his arm, making Ghost feel dizzy and sick. His head spins and his vision starts to blur.
âNow, Simon Riley, it is almost Christmas. Something happened to you on Christmas, didnât it, Simon Riley?â
No. Fuck. Not that one. Please, not that one. Ghost tries to fight it, but he fails.
He blinks and is back in that small Manchester flat. Itâs Christmas Eve. Beth had just baked gingerbread. Little Joseph was gawping at the twinkling lights on the tree. Even Tommy and mum seemed happy.
And then everything went wrong.
âI hear, Simon Riley, that your family died that night.â The lights go dim. Suddenly, the man is in the room, walking towards Simon. Heâs holding something in his hand. A gun. Is he going to kill them right in front of him? âI hear, Simon Riley, that you killed them that night.â He places the pistol in Simonâs hands.
What? No. No. Sparks and Washington killed them. Simon still realizes thatâŠ
Doesnât he?
Simon looks around. Blood spatters paint the flat a deep red. He walks over to the Christmas tree. A gunshot wound pieces the front of little Josephâs skull. Simon collapses to his knees.
âI hear you killed your nephew first, Simon Riley.â
âN-no. No, I didnât,â Simon shakily replies. The gun in his hand is suddenly smoking though, and it is strangely pointing at Josephâs little body.
But Simon knows he didnât kill him⊠he thinks he didnât kill him.
âI hear you went for your brotherâs wife next, Simon Riley,â the manâs voice sounds from behind. Simon turns around and shoots the man. The body that falls is Bethâs.
âNo! Fuck!â Simon screams as he rushes to Bethâs rapidly cooling body. Blood pools behind her head.
Simon didnât kill Beth. He didnât.
Did he?
âYou killed your poor mother next, Simon Riley. She didnât stand a chance, did she, Simon Riley?â
Simon looks over at the body right next to Bethâs. Itâs his mum. Her terrified, lifeless eyes stare accusingly towards Simon.
âAnd then, Simon Riley, your brother walked in and saw what you did,â someone grabs Simonâs shoulder. He instinctively turns and shoots. Itâs Tommy.
âYou killed him, Simon Riley. You killed your entire family.â
No he didnât. No he didnât. No he didnât. No he didnât. No he didnât. No he didnât. No he didnât. No he didnât. No he didnât. No he didnât. No he didnât. No he didnât. No he didnât. No he didnât. No he didnât. No he didnât. No he didnât. No he didnât.
Maybe he did.
Simon looks around the room again. His entire family is gone. Itâs his fault. He crumples to the floor, squeezing his eyes shut and covering his ears. His breathing picks up. His heart rate spikes. The manâs voice persists.
âYou covered it up, Simon Riley. But you cannot run forever. What will your fellow soldiers do when they find out what youâve done? How will they react when they find out you killed your family, Simon Riley?â
Simon gasps for air, but it doesnât come. Itâs just a hallucination, he tells himself. But the gun in his hands feels so real. The bloodâtheir bloodâis hot and sticky on his skin.
Suddenly, heâs in the Credenhill interrogation room. He has no mask. The man walks around the room, continuing to mock Ghost. The one-way mirror shuts off, revealing the rest of the SAS base. Price, Gaz, and Laswell stare at him, disgust plastered on their faces. SoapâJohnnyâstands in the corner, eyes full of fear as he looks at the monster cuffed to the table.
In the center, though, the rotting corpses of the Rileys stare back at him.
Ghost feels himself starting to convulse. Heâs seizing again. His vision swirls and starts to darken. At least it will be over again soon.
-------------------
Itâs been seven days since Ghost was taken, and Soap has spent six of them stuck in the safehouse, delerious and bedridden from a fucking cold of all things. Not to mention his rolled ankle. Yesterday was the first day he could stand and walk around the room without feeling like he was actively dying. Heâs so fucking pissed about it. Soap never gets sick. Why now, when Ghost needs him? Fuckinâ useless piece o shite. Why wid Ghost need you? Itâs yer faut heâs been captured in the first place. He probably fucking hates ye.
Gaz and Price are trying their best, but so far they havenât found anything that could lead them to finding their lieutenant. Yesterday, Price even seemed like he was close to giving up. Soap is pissed about that, too. If he had just ignored his captain, he probably would have found Ghost already. Itâs not like Soap is unfamiliar with the concept of insubordination. In fact, heâs kind of known for it.
Itâs 0900, and Soap is feeling much better todayâso much so that heâs ready to go searching for Ghost himself. As he walks into the safehouse kitchen, he spots Gaz mulling over some papers.
âWhatâs this?â Soap asks as he pulls up a chair.
âWell good morning to you too, sleepyhead,â Gaz replies without looking up. âBack with the land of the living, eh?â
âOch fuck off, mate. Iâm fine. Whatâre ye looking at anyways?â It looks like the schematics of some buildingâpossibly a bunker.
âWell, while you were on your death bed, Cap found the mole. He interrogated the fucker early this morning and got⊠these,â Gaz gestures to the schematics and hands Soap a manilla folder.
Soap takes the folder and opens it. What the fuck..? Inside is a whole bloody fucking dossier on one Lieutenant Simon Riley. The folder includes his entire military historyâincluding a very detailed, very disturbing section on his capture in Mexico and the aftermath. Steaming fucking Jesus. Betrayed by his own team, tortured for months, raped, and buried alive? Soap feels his pulse ticking in his neck. He knew Ghost had a rough historyâSoap just always assumed it was because of his fatherâs abuse.
Then he sees it. Fucking Christmas Eve.
âBleedinâ Jesus, did anyone know about this?â Soap asks, but it barely comes out as a whisper.
âNoânot even the higher ups knew,â Gaz replies darkly. âThe only person besides Ghost who knew the whole story was Price. He was fucking pissed when he came in earlier. Went through six bloody cigars in an attempt to blow off some steam.â
âHowâd they get this?â Soap mutters.
âSeems like we had more than one mole,â Gaz states. âSomeone broke into Priceâs office and copied Ghostâs file just after we left. Bloody bastard was caught for breaking in, but they never found the copied records.â
Soap stares at the folder. Ghost lost his entire family in one night. No fucking wonder he seems to hate the holiday.
WaitâŠ
âIf those bawbags know about Ghostâs history, who fucking knows what theyâre doing to him now,â Soap growls. âWe cannae let him go through that again, Kyle. We have tae find him.â
âI know, Tav. I know. Thatâs what this is for,â Gaz points to the schematics. âThis is an old Soviet bunker just outside of the town we passed a few weeks ago. Price suspects theyâre keeping Ghost there.â
A lead. Thatâs a lead. Why are they waiting?
âWell, what the fuck are we still doing here? We know where Ghost isâwhy arenât we going to get him?â Soap shoots up from his seat.
âWoah, easy mate,â Gaz grabs Soapâs wrist. âWe canât just run in there. We donât even know if thatâs where theyâre keeping him. Price is doing recon nowâhe should be back in a few hours. For now though, we wait.â Gazâs voice softens, and he gives Soap a knowing look, âWeâll get him, Tav. We wonât let these bastards break our lieutenant.â
That doesnât make Soap feel any better, but he pretends it does for Gazâs sake.
And so they wait.
âŠ
Itâs nearly 1300 and Soap is getting antsy. Price still hasnât returned. Soapâs leg is bouncing so hard that it hurts. He and Gaz have already played through the Uno deck that Soap had brought. Soap had tried to draw in his journal, but nothing looked right. Now the floor is littered with crumpled sketches.
Realistically, Soap knows that reconnaissance can take a while, but he knows that Ghost is in that building. He knows that Ghost is suffering. Theyâre torturing him somehow. Soap needs to get him out of there.
âThis is bullshit,â Soap grumbles. As he gets up to prep his gear, Price barges through the safehouse entrance, covered in snow and blood that isnât his own.
âWeâve found him,â Price smiles. âSoap, Gaz, get ready. Weâre leaving in thirty.â
Soap feels like all of the air is sucked out of him. They found him. They found Ghost. And based on Priceâs reaction, heâs alive.
They spend the next twenty-five minutes gearing up and replenishing their packs. Price explains the plan. The bunker is underneath a country cottage just outside of the city. Itâs mostly abandoned, save for a few members of the local Romanian mafia.
âWe need to be careful, Sergeants. These men have strong connections to the local government. If they call for backup, weâre in deep shit,â Price explains.
âMafia? I thought we were dealing with terrorists,â Soap asks.
âWe are,â Price states. âTurns out itâs all connected. The mafia and their connections here are a part of the same terrorist organization that you and Ghost were tasked with gathering intel from. Itâs a lot of bio-medical bullshit. Right now, theyâre harvesting and trafficking organs.â
âFuck,â Gaz whispers. âDo you thinkâŠâ He cuts himself off. Price shifts but shakes his head. âNo, Kyle. These wankers want to use him. It wonât work. We know thisâheâs been through this before,â Price scrubs his face with his hand. âBut boys, I need you to prepare for what you might see in there. They had Simonâs file. We donât know what these bastards are doing to him.â
Soapâs jaw ticks. He keeps his mouth shut and stares a hole into the schematics. He doesnât trust himself to not blow up on his captain. He knows he shouldnât be angry. Price made the right call. And then thereâs the cold and the rolled ankle, which were both 100% Soapâs own fault. He would have died if he stayed out there overnight.
But stillâŠ
They continue preparing, Price continuing to go over the infiltration plan. Soap can feel his heart rate increasing. What if ye fuck it aw up again? What if they catch on an kill Ghost before ye get the chance tae get him oot? Soap bites the inside of his cheek hard enough to taste blood. He shouldnât be this nervous.
âAlright boys, our entry point is here,â Price taps his pen to the bunker entrance. âIâll stand back for overwatch until we can guarantee the outside is clear. Once weâve picked off the guards, weâll use a heartbeat sensor to check for hostiles inside. Gaz, I want you to clear out as many rooms as you can, but watch your fire. We donât know where they're keeping Ghost. Iâll be on your six the whole time.â Gaz nods while staring intensely at the schematics, mentally mapping the bunker and all of its possible danger spots. Price continues, âSoap, Iâm trusting you to find Ghost and⊠just make sure heâs breathing. Once we clear the bunker, Gaz will prep for exfil while I head to wherever you are for assistance. Are we clear?â
