I’m back!
Very thankful beyond words for my upcoming full-length opera “An American Soldier”, with a libretto by David Henry Hwang, to be commissioned and produced by Opera Theatre of Saint Louis for the world premiere in 2018 as part of OTSL’s New Works, Bold Voices Series. "An American Soldier" is based on the story of the tragic death of Chinese-American Army Private Danny Chen, who took his own life while stationed in a guard tower at a base in Kandahar province, Afghanistan. Based on the ensuing courts-martial of Chen’s fellow soldiers, "An American Soldier" addresses issues of patriotism, cultural identity, belonging, and otherness. A 60-minute version of the opera was commissioned by Washington National Opera and premiered at the The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in 2014 as part of WNO’s American Opera Initiative. The opera will be expanded into a full-length work for its premiere in St. Louis. Stay tuned …
To you all who celebrate the Chinese New Year: wishing you a healthy, joyful, and peaceful Year of the Monkey to come ... ("Gibbons at Play" by Emperor Xuanzong (1399-1435), Ming dynasty)
*I must say that not too many emperors and kings throughout the history in the world can paint as well and as imaginative as Emperor Xuangzong, from the 15th century Chinese Ming dynasty!
The festival, which will feature 49 performances at seven different venues at Lincoln Center and beyond, will run from July 13 through 31.
Just announced: my new installation opera "Paradise Interrupted", a collaboration with visual artist Jennifer Wen Ma, will open this year's Lincoln Center Festival 2016, receiving its New York premiere from July 13-16. Hope to see you then!
Happy New Year Everyone!

Tonight (Dec. 5), back in the United States, the Del Sol String Quartet will bring my String Quartet No.3: Calligraffiti to the San Francisco audience. Calligraffiti is a hybrid word combining calligraphy and graffiti. Each of them represents the spirit of its own culture. Calligraphy is from the East and Graffiti is from the West. The integration of both art forms not only highlights their own use of colors, and materials, but also features the improvisation aspect that both genres share. Transforming the visual aspect of Calligraffiti into sonic aspect is the crucial point of this quartet. An unbreakable line is formed at the beginning of the piece by all four-string instruments. It ascends throughout the piece, while dropping to the starting position towards the end. This sonic line is also like a mirror, which reflects whatever images surrounding it during its wavy journey. For tonight’s concert, I am very honor to share the same bill with American icon Terry Riley’s world premiere of “Dark Queen Mantra,” composed for the Del Sol String Quartet. http://www.sfgate.com/music/article/Del-Sol-unveils-a-quartet-from-Terry-Riley-6667860.php
Move over Santa Claus, here comes Sinterklaas in Holland! Just arrived on time for the annual Sinterklaas celebration at the Concertgebouw! Kids went wild, eating, drinking (chocolate-milk with whip-cream), partying, and receiving gifts ... What I learned is that, Sinterklaas is celebrated annually with the giving of gifts on 5 December 5, the night before Saint Nicholas Day in the Northern Netherlands and on the morning of December 6.
It is a great honor to be photographed by the world-renown photographer Marco Borggreve for Het Concertgebouw Amsterdam, officially kicking off my new residency here in Amsterdam!
