I've mentioned I TAed for a European history course senior year. a lot of my students tried to write papers on why the Nazis were bad and when I discouraged that I would often get responses to the effect of "what, you don't think Hitler was bad?" and of course I do, but that's not an interesting historical argument, nor is it a useful one. at best you're preaching to the choir, at worst you're actively harming efforts to understand than answers to more useful questions like how did they rise to power? why and how did they carry out the Holocaust? (yes they hated Jews, no "because they hated Jews" is not a good historical explanation) and so on. because theres a fear that trying to understand the "bad guys" is sympathizing with them. this fear is counterproductive.
