How Much Do I Love Thee, JB?
Let me count the fanfics!
The last few days have been challenging as a writer of Jaime x Brienne fanfic. Between keeping track of reports filed with AO3 against the writers (yep, it wasn’t just one) concerned and restricting access to my works, real life demanded attention too.
There’s been a lot of nastiness going on with particular factions in the JB fandom. Whoever’s reading this, if you’re as active in the fandom as I am, you know what I’m talking about. You would think our love for the characters should make us at least nice towards each other, even though we only know each other through forums and fanfics. But some, out of jealousy, perhaps, have eventually turned people off from the fandom. Another problem is there is hardly any JB fanfic worth reading, except for those I mentioned in a previous post. I say that honestly, and I know I sound like an asshole because I’ll be talking about my fanfics. It’s not even a matter of taste, guys. It’s just…bad. You can’t help but wonder where the creativity went, if the writers who write the same JB crap over and over again can still claim to love the characters, whether in the books, the show or both.
I’m dealing with the crisis by reminding myself why I started writing JB fanfic in the first place: I love the characters, especially Brienne. No plagiarizing bonehead (I know who you are and YOU’RE CREEPING ME OUT with your lurking in my Tumblr–I’d report you because you’re practically stalking me here) can ruin it for me.
But because of what happened, I’m currently restricting access to my works. Who knows, maybe when the dust settles and all I’ll change my mind. Questions were raised– those who copied me have AO3 accounts and will still have access to them. Yes. You’re right. And yeah, what I’m doing doesn’t make a lot of sense. But because people will still copy and can just get another account should they get banned, at least exercising more control with the availability of my works makes it easier for me to claim plagiarism in the future. Because I don’t believe for a fucking second that these TWO AO3 fanfic writers could argue coincidence. I know how they write–I was a fan before I saw them COPYING SCENES from my previous works. I refuse to hear another weak-ass defense about coincidence in the future because, come on. Let’s not bullshit each other.
Their smut was alright. I’d even say good, so WHY rip off smutty scenes from me?
Now that, awesome people, makes fucking zero sense. Somebody pass the tequila!
And if they wanted more followers, again, they get a LOT MORE kudos and comments because they’re quite active in a group. Their involvement alone gets them more than a leg up, so to speak. Really, why copy from another writer who gets only half (hell, even less!) the kudos and comments they get?
They will always copy. Unfortunately. But they can’t take away that I wrote the stories they copied first. No one (hahaha!) will ever rob me of the fun I had in writing the following Jaime x Brienne fan fiction:
1. Loving Harder and More
The very first JB fanfic I wrote! I was soo nervous after posting this because, really, it doesn’t compare to the fanfics I love by Ellaria, Roseheart, SigilBroken, to mention a few. But I couldn’t get this out of my mind so one day, I sat down and…wrote. Holy fuck, was I a mess. The anonymity should make me more relaxed as well as years of writing but this different.
This is the first story written in The Lannisters Are Coming series, which will end this year. There are only four more left. Maybe. Could be fewer.
For the record, I did not set out to write a series. I thought this was the only JB fanfic I’ll write.Oh, and I love that some people HATE that Jaime and Brienne have six children over the course of this series YET are obsessed with a joke from Nikolaj Coster-Waldau about Jaime dying of old age surrounded by Brienne and their ten kids. Perhaps if people knew I possess a jaw that could cut glass and I’m a Danish, six-foot-two hunk they’ll be giggly over it too.

2. Westeros Central Agency
Alias is one of my favorite shows EVER. So, I was inspired to write a fanfic where Brienne is a black ops agent (The Golden Company) and Jaime is a scientist who weaponized Wildfyre. Bananas, right?
Believe it or not, the scenes I enjoyed writing are the ones involving Brienne with her mom. I won’t tell you who her mom is!

Oh. My. God. This is my favorite series. Jaime is the lead singer of Kingslayers, the biggest rock band in Westeros. His addiction gets him kicked out of the band. Brienne is his band manager who’s desperate to put him back in the limelight.
This was inspired by my favorite pair in Love Actually, Billy Mack and Joe!

This is the hardest I’ve written after Westeros Central Agency. It was fun in that I was challenging myself in including issues of emotional abuse, infidelity, statutory rape, incest and commitment in my stories in the series. Yeah…controversial topics don’t scare me.
I know for a fact that some people hated that Brienne was cheating.
Maybe instead of despising my experiments, haters can try experimenting. Challenge yourself once in a while. Challenges can be fun!

6. Lion, Maiden, Wildling
I liked writing this but it was so fucking hard! A gift to @elenatria and @artfilmfile
I write smut all the time and it makes me happy when people say they enjoy it. But it’s hard, guys. What made this threesome fanfic of Jaime, Brienne and Tormund difficult is…the logistics of a threesome. There’s a lot of clarification from all involved, first, and also the nitty-gritty regarding boundaries, getting cleared, safe words and such. And the sex itself! As I complained to these two ladies, there were so many arms and legs it’s a wonder no one got knocked out. I also had to research on sex positions. It’s not just a matter of adding one more person, believe it or not.
I honestly can’t imagine doing another threesome fic again. Definitely one of the hardest, if not the hardest I’ve written. But the love from these two ladies and the readers were worth it!

I was fascinated with the idea of Brienne being Sansa’s bodyguard and both of them getting hurt. Brienne is also having a secret affair with Jaime, Sansa’s brother-in-law. The assassination attempt forces Brienne to confront the depth of her feelings about Jaime and to realize that darkness is never a hindrance to love.

8. Now I See You
Oh, this one! I loved it! It was so timely that I posted this maybe just days before the Harvey Weinstein scandal broke out. While the story doesn’t directly deal with harassment of women in the entertainment industry, Brienne, who’s an indie film director about to have mainstream success, had to work and fight harder for equality and yes, she experienced harassment.
This is also the first fanfic I wrote where Jaime is crippled and his anxiety about being returning to the big screen after a life-changing accident propels a series of events that leads to love.

This is the third installment in my ongoing Blue Awakening series. This is not easy reading for anyone. I was very careful in writing the chapter where Brienne does a rape kit after her sexual assault.
Why would I enjoy writing this thing? What’s liberating about fanfic is despite conventions, it’s basically your show. You can do whatever the fuck you want, and there’s something about the characters of Jaime and Brienne that, for me, works in the contemporary situations I put them in.
At this point, you can see that I hardly write fluffy fic. It’s not that I can’t do it. It’s just that around twenty people in AO3 write fluff. I know some of you absolutely detest non-fluffy or angsty stuff while waiting for Season 8 and that’s your right. But don’t impose your taste on everyone.
I write not to get kudos and comments. I write because it’s fun.
