I hate that trans allies are told that asking someone what their pronouns are, or having people state their pronouns in a group, is a good way to be an ally. If you aren’t 100% certain that you’re in a trans-inclusive space, then don’t ask. It forces trans people to do one of two things: 1) out themselves, which can potentially be life-threatening or 2) force themselves to lie about what their actual pronouns are + what they’re actually comfortable with is. Forcing trans people to choose between those two things is not what an ally should ever do.

If you want to be certain that you’re using the right pronouns for someone, the very least you should do is ask them in private and ask them what pronouns you should use around other people, in case they’re not out to everyone. Additionally, if trans people don’t tell you their pronouns for whatever reason, you should never try to force them to tell you or get offended when they don’t.

Oh shit I’ve created a whole society that allows the systematic oppression of cis people to exist? That leads to cis people conatntly being murdered and abused into suicide, just for being cis?

I’ve created a medical hellscape of gatekeeping that keeps life-saving treatments away from cis people, just because I don’t think cis people should be trusted with the power to define themselves and know what is best for themselves - and they should instead only be defined and “diagnosed” by me and people like me and only be approved for treatments if they are cis in the way we think they should be?

Did I literally just create a whole social norm of coercively misgendering cis people from the day they are born, consatntly and consistently putting them through emotional trauma that will give them issues for the rest of their lives?

Have I really treated cis people the same way that they treat trans people?
