Why My Origins Are Not Your Concern: Navigating the world of the white gaze can be a terrifying one. With a skin tone many shades removed from the coveted hue of fresh snowfall its difficult to travel the paths of Boston without sticking out like the proverbial sore thumb. Often the line between partner and prey becomes blurred. I look into the eyes of potential paramours and must ask myself if my allure is rooted in my narrative or the one they have written for me. A fictional piece of violent travels to the free world, passionate romance while surrounded by the backdrop of the amazon, and explosive deliveries of my native tongue which boom louder than the tropic thunder and yet silently enough to be sequestered by the uproar of Latin America's political turmoil. But my speculations don't linger for long; the answer often presents itself within seconds. "Soooo where are you from?" That xenophobic desire to recognize as you as "other." A foreign navigator of a land that clearly cannot be your home. At first I try to be optimistic. I think to myself, "Maybe there is a genuine interest here for my ancestry? Perhaps this individual has a keen desire to explore the beauty of the land that carved the journey that has brought me to where I am today." I respond the way I always do. Clarifying that my family's origins lay in Colombia. As the words escape my lips I can already anticipate the responses. "Hey Papi!" "I love Latinos." "You know I once had a neighbor who dated a Colombian." After squirming for a few minutes under the spotlight of their lustful eyes I hope for more; some follow up on my history but those hopes often conclude in disappointment. The damage in these questions and its variants is in its basis. As POC we're asked our origins not because our white counterparts want to know our background but because they have already created one for us. What they want, better yet what they need, is for us to play into the roles that were assigned to us. In this case that role requires a clarification that one is Colombian or Korean or Sudanese and not American. Some white individuals may roll their eyes at such a statement but let me ask you this. When was the last time you met a white individual and began a conversation with "Where are you from?" and then not only expected a response but a reply that clarified a NATION of origin and not a CITY or STATE. Despite living together in a land historically based on the glorification of European immigrants and slaughter of indigenous communities we often blind ourselves in an illusion that European and American are synonymous and non-European and American are antonyms. Like the stigmatizing scarlet letter this question functions as a marker to label and separate. It holds the power and capability to function as a tool of segregation. Once a certain answer is given we instantly associate certain behaviors and patterns to it and declare that all individuals who give the same answer in turn exhibit these conditions. Examples include the "labor working Mexican who steals jobs," "the coke dealing Colombian," "the sketchy, promiscuous Dominican." Furthermore, this behavior gives POC a one dimensional identity and blinds people to the nuances in our experiences and the vast complexities of our livelihoods. This is not to say that one cannot hold genuine interest in a partner's past. Rather this is a reminder that when we ask for tales of origin we must step back and analyze the foundation of such a question. What is it that I'm trying to learn exactly? What is my intention? Am I hoping for a certain answer? If so, why? A refusal to analyze intention is to declare innocence in motive and we have learned time and time again that the pervasive hand of oppression masquerades in less visible forms. Allowing it to expand without hostility. Body Landscapes and the Politics of Self Love:
Today I woke up angry with the reflection looking back at me in the mirror. I cringed and scowled as I squished the pudgy flesh that had made my abdomen its home for so many years. Seconds felt like hours as I scoured the curves of my body like a battlefield. Desperately, I tried to look for a weak point; a spot where I could zone in my crunches and scorch my fatty tissue. Plotting how I could turn my core into a replica of Ryan Gosling's chiseled physique. After about 5 minutes of desperation I renounced defeat and sought comfort in a glazed ridges of a pumpkin doughnut and layers of fabric from Express.
Today was no anomaly. It was a day of frustration with my body for being far removed from social media's paradigm of an ideal physique. This morning felt like an augury signaling a lifetime of self-loathing and shame. However, I also know that tomorrow will be a new day, a better day. I know that tomorrow I'll be back to my vain, narcissistic self. The arrogant fool who strikes poses in the mirror and half jokingly compares himself to a heartthrob. I'm not saying these days of body shaming won't exist in the future but I acknowledge that they're the exceptions and not the rule.
In order to advance forward in the plight toward self-love we must remind ourselves that sometimes it is okay not to have all the answers; it is okay to not always be defiant against societal norms. We are human and are susceptible to mainstream desires just like everyone else. What we must learn to do is not simply accept these difficult days but ask why we have them? What triggers them? What do we desire? And do these desires align with our body politics? For that last question the answer isn't always one we want to hear but its one we must hear. We have to remember that the revolution toward body positivity is an arduous one and that losing a battle every now and then does not mean we will lose the war. Do not belittle yourself for having days where your confidence isn't always sublime. Instead opt to engage in self care. Rock that fuzzy sweater that makes you feel a little more comfortable. Binge eat that Ben & Jerrys. Call Nick at Dominoes and tell him you'll be ordering the usual. Remember that every day is a new day and sometimes the short term benefit of self care and forgiveness opens a new path to long term self-love.
In speaking about trans/nationalism and the privileges of white FTM in comparison to TPOC, poet Janani Balasubramaniam says "your bodies may have not always been yours but they have always been beautiful." I want to echo those lines now in a different capacity. I want to reinforce the conviction that beauty is a subjective perspective and the only view about our bodies that matters is constrained to the first person. Unfortunately, society may insist that beauty has a single definition: it is white, muscular, contains a single digit body fat percentage, and glistens in the morning sun and demand that we abide by these guidelines. Know that your radical resistance does not have to be a solitary one. Love yourself enough to know that it is okay to sit in the bunker during this body image war and allow your comrades to hold down the trenches until you can recover. Your bodies may not always be the ones you desire, but they will always be beautiful.

Transgender survivors of sexual assault – who make up approximately half of the trans community – face unique healing issues. To help meet those unique needs, FORGE is proud to announce the publication of“Transgender Sexual Violence Survivors: A Self-Help Guide to Healing and Understanding,” available today! You can view or download your copy athttp://www.forge-forward.org/sv-selfhelp-guide.
This 132-page document is densely packed with information specifically for transgender, gender non-conforming, and gender non-binary survivors of sexual violence.
In a reader-friendly format, the guide covers substantial territory, presenting readers with core information about the impact of trauma and its aftermath, as well as providing resource information on options for healing, and self-help techniques on a wide range of topics that often affect survivors. A section of the guide is devoted to the unique intersections that trans survivors face which often lead to challenges in accessing services and delays in healing.
Three appendices provide information:
1) For trans people who have just been assaulted;
2) Tools for assessing if your current relationship might be abusive, and
3. new federal non-discrimination protections for trans people.
The Self Help Guide for Trans Survivors of Violence is the second of four guides to be issued this year. The first Guide, “Let’s Talk about It! A Transgender Survivor’s Guide to Accessing Therapy,” released in May 2015, is available at http://www.forge-forward.org/therapy-guide. The additional two guides, “A Guide for Partners and Loved Ones of Trans Sexual Violence Survivors,” and “A Guide for Support Group Facilitators”will be issued this fall.

Using my Blackout post as my Coming Out Day (yesterday). My name is Bonita. I use they/them and identity as a genderfluid femme trans boi/fag. I call also myself queer but dont really have a sexual identity, i just like people and fucking. I love who i am, my name, my body and all I have been done with it to create space for all the trans weirdos, the try to hards, the your pronouns are hard, the you can’t be a fag because you are trans n Blacks. All of this matters. I’m gonna try to move on with my life day to day and keep reminding myself I’m not an accident.
