The worry began to slowly appear inside you when you heard how the perfect sound of silence reigned abruptly in the environment of the big cold house, something that rarely happened since Ralph took care that there always existed even if it was a faint noise, either when he would tear the wall of his room with his knife or wash the dirty dishes or even when he would just start laughing from any location in the house, of course, you were quite used to it.
But the silence had never highlighted the noise in the house, much less completely covered all possible noise. So you deduced that something was happening and it was probably bad.
You stopped your daily reading, rising from the sofa until you were seated, you remarked the page where you had been folding the corner of the sheet gently and you left the book on the small table that was next to the large and comfortable sofa.
When you stood up, you headed straight to the stairs, accelerating your pace when you were going up, making the wood grind under the weight of your quick footsteps, the squeak wrapped around the silent atmosphere, giving a chilling touch to the interior of the house. When you finally climbed all the stairs, you almost trotted into Ralph’s room, which had the door completely closed, making you frown. The android never left the door closed, since he felt the anxiety of being locked up. Clearly you knew him as the palm of your hand, you knew each of his fears and anxieties.
But a couple of weeks ago you noticed how Ralph’s behavior had changed, of course he behaved oddly most of the time, but he was behaving even rarer lately with you. You hadn’t wanted to ask him directly what was wrong, not to make him feel bad or to give him one of his constant panic attacks. You just wanted to help the poor android, it wouldn’t help that he felt badly judged with some of your questions.
You turned the knob of the door and opened it with some speed, fearing the scene that you would find in front of you when you opened it completely, in your head you had imagined the worst, but, seeing really what was happening inside, you felt like your heart was shrinking inside you.
Ralph was lying on his bed in a fetal position, with his back facing the door, his hood was lying on the foot of the bed and his knife was on the floor. You sighed silently relieved to see that the android was completely well physically, although when you heard a sob coming from him, you walked towards his bed quickly but gently. You knelt by the side of the bed and supported yourself with both hands on your knees.
“Ralph?” You questioned his name in a soft tone of voice. You didn’t want to upset him or feel uncomfortable, so you should behave as relaxed as possible in front of him. The android remained motionless, but you managed to hear another silent sob come from between his lips. “What bothers you, honey?”
When he finally turned and let you see his face, you felt as if you were repeatedly punctured directly into your heart. His cheeks were wet because of his tears and his gaze reflected uncertainty, fear and especially lostness. You didn’t know what to say when you opened your mouth slightly. You stood motionless looking at the poor broken android, almost feeling his pain emanating through his eyes.
“Ralph thinks he doesn’t deserve (Y/N).” He mumbled almost inaudibly, but your ears reached his broken voice anyway.
You frowned, but you had to stay as relaxed as possible before him. You didn’t want to make him feel uncomfortable or anxious with your expression. “What? Ralph— What makes you think that?”
Ralph lowered his gaze and rested the side of his face on his hands. “Ralph thinks that (Y/N) is too good for him and that she should be with someone who really deserves her, and not with someone so…” The android sat on the bed, letting it hang smoothly his legs right next to you, being careful so that they didn’t touch you. His LED flashed red for a couple of seconds, worrying you. “… defective as Ralph.”
You decided to go a little closer to Ralph, standing up and sitting by his side, obviously keeping a prudent space so he wouldn’t feel overwhelmed. You interlocked your fingers and laid your hands on your lap, thinking of the right words you would say. “Ralph, you’re the most wonderful person I’ve ever met. I don’t know how you came to the conclusion that you don’t deserve me, of course you deserve me, you deserve all the good things in this world in fact… and please never say again that you consider yourself defective, because believe me, the less you are is defective.” The android didn’t raise his eyes from his hands, although you could notice how his expression ligthen a little up at hearing your words. You raised your right hand and placed it gently on his shoulder, giving him a slow and delicate caress that showed nothing but support. Ralph didn’t seem uncomfortable with your caress, since his body didn’t tense at any time, something you obviously took as a good thing. “I adore you, Ralph. You don’t know how grateful I am to have met you.”
“(Y/N) is everything for Ralph, she’s all he has left.” He murmured softly over the silence of the room. “Ralph doesn’t want to lose her. He’s very afraid of losing her like all the other people Ralph loved.”
Your vision became cloudy and unfocused because of the tears that suddenly gathered in the lower eyelids of your eyes. Again you didn’t know what to say exactly. The words seemed to lock in your throat, like a knot that appeared slowly.
“You will not lose me, Ralph.” The android this time at hear your trembling voice, raised his head and turned to look at you, with a hint of hope reflected in his eyes. “I promise.”
Seconds passed in which silence reigned the atmosphere again. Ralph seemed to debate inside, but his gaze didn’t leave yours. When he finally seemed to convince himself, he approached you and with both arms surrounded your waist, approaching you to his cold body in a soft hug. He placed his chin on your right shoulder as delicately as possible, making you believe that before his eyes you were a delicate crystal doll that would break at the slightest abrupt movement.
At first, you seemed to freeze, not knowing what to do. It was the first time that Ralph hugged you, or at least that he began the hug, because the few times you had shared a hug was because you surrounded his body with your arms first and it was a very short hug of just seconds. But this one seemed to last for hours, not that you complain.
You surrounded Ralph’s shoulders with your arms and also supported your chin on his shoulder, never wanting to let go.
“Please, never leave me.” Ralph’s words made your heart stop beating for a few seconds. He spoke in first person. In all the time you had been living with him, he had never stopped talking in third person for any reason.
Again your sight was out of focus and this time a couple of rebellious tears ran down your cheeks, leaving a wet path under their step.
“Never.” You whispered against his ear, you brought your hands to the back of his head and stroked his hair with your fingers gently.
You were fixing him. And he fixing you.
