"Got a light?"
Yes?
"I am sorry to hear that. If there is anyway I can lend a hand in helping to turn your weak around, please, don’t hesitate to let me know." Portia offered him a warm and gentle smile before nodding her head. "It would have been very distressful for me, but thankfully that wasn’t the case, and for that I am grateful."
"I thank you for the concern, but I likely am merely in need of a little rest. Fortunately that should be available with the upcoming holiday." He shook his head. "You are quite welcome." His glance took in the bar. "If I might, however, you may wish to be a trifle more cautious here. Many of these...persons would have little respect for the written word."
Once again, she leaned closer to Connor, but this time, she didn’t touch him. It was cute to see him, the ‘all serious and proper one’, trying not to smile. “You’re smiling.” Isabelle whispered in his ear, before she stepped back in order to answer his question. “It’s been hell. I don’t know how am I ever going to survive another day without you, Connor. If you have any survival tips, I’m all ears.” She said, in fake exhasperation.
Connor ducked his head, doing his best to repress that smile wanting to slip through. "Now, Miss Isabelle, let us not overstate things," he replied before shaking his head at her follow up comments. He played along however. "And I recommend British television. I doubt it shall completely make up the difference, but you will find some wit there and at least they generally speak with the correct accent."
"See, this is why I like you." Isabelle smiled, feeling more at ease with his presence now that she was out of Adam’s house, than she ever had before. Leaning in, she rested her arm on his shoulder and continued. "You know exactly what I’m capable of. It’s good for the ego." Belle smiled and pecked his cheek, before she stepped back. "Good thing that you miss me."
Connor raised an eyebrow at her actions, though his lips twitched in amusement. No wonder the woman got along with Lucas so well. "It may indeed be good for the ego, Miss Isabelle, but it is fact, and I prefer to stick to those whenever possible." He shook his head, one corner of his mouth lifting in a half smile. "And how do you manage without our scintillating wit?"
Portia happily took the book from Connor’s hand offering him a kind smile. “That is quite alright, no need for an apology, really. Thank you for handing me my book though. I was afraid that I had lost it. Are you having an off evening?”
"It has been a long week, Miss DeRavin," Connor replied. "And you are quite welcome. I understand the distress the loss of a favorite book can bring."
Adam waived the man’s apologies away. “Been there, done that.” Although when he snapped, he did it so much more angrily than Connor had. “What’s got you so drained? Take a break. It’s Christmas. But do so after this weekend… I must ask you for yet another favor.”
"Merely not getting enough rest." Connor shook his head. A break would do him good, though it might be the holiday itself before that happened. A curious eyebrow went up. "Of course. What do you need?"
"Just wondering if you by any chance new any good Italian restaurant around here?"
"Authentic Italian or the average version people tend to call Italian?"
"Sounds like fun."
"And are you volunteering for that hit list?"
"It was only a question man, you don’t have to stop the world just to answer me"
"Very well. If you would be so good as to repeat the question, I shall do my best to provide you an answer."
"I left my book near where you are seated, pardon my interruption, but it’s a book I actually enjoy reading." Portia simply pointed to her book to show the reason for her interruption.
"My apologies, Miss DeRavin," Connor tilted his head and picked up the book. He turned and offered it to her. "I am afraid my manners are not what they should be this evening."
Fair enough. Save your apologies, Walters. No harm’s been done.
It was unbecoming to snap without first ascertaining as to whom I was snapping at. It has been a long week.
I’m not really sad to disappoint you, so… I wasn’t going to talk to you. Just order a drink.
Thank you. I find myself quite gratified to hear that.
"Define ‘emergency’."
"Is someone I should be concerned about dead, dying, or on a hit list? Is the place about to come down around our ears? If the answer to both is no then it is not likely an emergency."
"I do love challenges." The brunette teased, offering him her most innocent grin. "Will you make it hard for me Connor?"
"I would certainly hate to disappoint you by not doing so. To not make it difficult would be quite the insult to your skills and intelligence, Miss Isabelle. Perish the thought."
"Not particularly. I was just trying to make conversation. Didn’t realize that your drink required your undivided attention."
"I should not have been so quick to snap. It has been a long week."
