up-to-date (2021) guide to trigger tagging on tumblr
WORST:
#cw [trigger], #// [trigger], #[trigger] //, #tw: [trigger], #[trigger] mention tw, #trigger warning: [trigger], #[trigger] trigger warning, or similar formats with different combinations of tw, cw, and slashes or dashes. it’s basically impossible to blacklist every unique format out there, so just use formats that most people will know to blacklist.
BAD:
#tw [trigger] (this one you should try to avoid, but it’s a fairly common format so it’ll at least catch some people’s blacklists) #[trigger] cw (i understand the sentiment, but using cw/content warning instead of tw/trigger warning unless it’s been specifically requested can be confusing and harder to filter)
OKAY:
#[trigger] tw (especially useful for original posts about stuff like certain media or characters so the posts don’t show up in tumblr search) #[trigger] m #[trigger] ment (this borders good and okay, someone relatively new to tumblr may not be aware of it but it’s faster to type and therefore easier to filter)
GOOD:
#[trigger] #[trigger] mention
NOTES:
transmisogyny is spelled transmisogyny with two y’s, the order of y’s and i’s is i y y
trypophobia is spelled trypophobia but it’s also common to tag as #trypo if you have trouble with the spelling
antisemitism is spelled antisemitism with no dashes and one e, the order of vowels is i e i i
posts that may trigger epilepsy should not be tagged #epilepsy, #epilepsy warning, or anything similar. #epilepsywarning is okay, but you can just tag as #flashing, #fast gif, #eyestrain, etc. based on the context.
if you tag nsfw content as anything other than #nsfw, use a common variant such as #not sfw or #nsft and make it clear that this is how you tag
criticism appreciated.
