The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (DVD / Blu-ray Combo + Digital Copy)

Hunger Games 2 aka the First Rambo? The one where he has PTSD after his unseen first stint in Vietnam. (this is the like 70's style movie Rambo that is kind of underrated except most people get that it is pretty good, just like they forget because Rambo 2 was such a big movie)

There was all of that psychological baggage I was looking for in the first movie.

Wait is she gonna marry the farmer boy? I mean I like him better than Peeta.

Is President Snow related to Jon snow?

District 13 should have its own movie. Also, why treat her like an adult? Bad guys are so bad at these political games.

Also I like Elizabeth Banks. Good for her taking a Chris Tucker in Fifth Element role. I like the intro music for Stanley Tucci's fake TV show.

Oh man, Rue…..was this a pop culture premonition for the Ferguson and Baltimore riots? Peeta is good at politics. But oh man...putting him on his knees and executing him? That is oof.

What is the endgame?

Rebellion is always the best. Stole another thing from battle Royale. Bringing victors back. I mean it is an obvious twist but still. That is cute, I wonder if there are any districts that don’t have one victor of each gender.

Also, ironic that the people who’s fashion sense seems to be derived from transgender tastes that there appear to only exist binary gendered persons. None of the other districts?

Dominatrix styling? Her eye makeup is on point though. She got better at bow tricks. I can’t wait to see her third chosen skill.

Jena Malone is already my favorite, can the series be about her? These wetsuits are pretty awesome. Picking out the bodies with one of those prize pickers.

So now this trilogy is Star Wars...that could be cool

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 [Blu-ray + DVD + Digital HD]

Thoughts as I watch the third movie in the span of a week (this is a really big deal guys, I don't normally get this excited about a series....good job Hollywood?)

I am already really angry about the fact that this is split into two while I am watching the previews.

So now that I have watched the first two movies and am about to embark on the third, my (very silly and actually very minor) concern is the fact that I was planning on reading the books (like they have been sitting on my bookshelf forever, oops), and now I will not be unable to picture the characters in the books without picturing the actors that portray them. Which I mean, vavavoom when it comes to J-Law and Jena, but like ugh, that is kind of one of my favorite things about reading books and then seeing the movie, seeing how much the director matched the picture in your head and then sort of critiqueing some of their choices. I have missed out on that with this entire series. Oops.

Well, that is a disorienting, awfully depressing way to start the movie.

Also, seeing Phillip Seymour Hoffman is really bittersweet right now. Maybe next, I will just watch a bunch of his movies.

Oh man, mass graves? That is Milosevic type shit. What is this rated again?

Also, execution style murders, man, so disturbing...do not like seeing that in a very very popular movie like this. I have weird feelings about how popular media culture tends to desensitize the population against horrific actions...and I really hope that these images were as disturbing to other people as they were to me.

First, I thought I was watching Winter's Bone again….which wouldn’t have been the worst thing, that is a good movie, I guess also maybe why J Law was cast?

Cute farmer boy. I don’t get it, why would the government not let you kill a deer? Is it hunting on restricted land or something? Ugh, it is times like these where I get libertarians and that really just makes me more upset.

What’s up with Peeta? Being kind of a dick dude. I guess he is just trying to learn about shit while Katniss is trying to just deal with the hand she just got fucking dealt.

I wonder if District 1 and 2 have minor league games so these kids have practice knowing what it is like to kill. That is sort of the difference between this and Battle Royale. Here we take for granted that they will do what they need to do to survive, but Battle Royale depicted those who were willing to kill as deviants as psychopaths. I do not like this lack of remorse in this movie.

Seriously Peeta? You are camouflaging yourself as a rock? I thought you were all strong and could throw heavy rocks or somethin at least.

So more or less the plot was an amalgamation of Winter’s Bone, then Ender’s Game, then Battle Royale, then Romeo and Juliet set against a background of politics that is your pretty standard overthrowing of a government. So Suzanne Collins = Tarentino of young adult novels?

Love Exposure [Blu-ray]

This is probably one of my favorite movies ever. I have very strong feelings about how underrated Asian cinema is, but then again, I might be biased. Probably my favorite movies ever are: Infernal Affairs, Battle Royale, Old Boy, Love Exposure, The Host...etc.

Some notes as I watched this:

The depiction of future technology is eerily familiar and seems plausible at worst and likely at best?

The anonymous phone sex scene is first of all funny/disturbing, but then now that I think about it kind of surprising there isn’t some app or some website like it that already exists.

The audio mix of “Samantha” is kind of what makes her the most human for the audience.

I made it through the first eighth of the movie without checking how long it is….new personal record.

I think I remember hearing that there was another voiceover actor before Scarlett, I kind of want to hear it, just to like compare and contrast...she is really really alive in the movie, more so than any movie that I have ever actually seen her in recently (then again the roles: Black Widow, an alien, and a human that can suddenly use 100% of her brain).

There is a bit of coldness that comes with her (lol) and she seems so warm as an operating system.

I like analyzing strangers' relationships as I move through their lives, as they pass through mine.

“Sometimes, I’d be my favorite writer that day.”

Olivia Wilde looks like an alien. Maybe it is a future aesthetic thing.

Throughout this entire movie, I have like that feeling in my chest, like all my emotions balled up in there, the movie is in mem affecting me or something.

The mom game was the best. Details of processed sugar ruining children, beating the other moms and letting them know it, jealousy points for the win.

Scarlett’s sex voice….kind of high pitched.

How is this going to end?

I guess the essence of a relationship is the presence of another. That is probably what is pulling at me from the inside, cause I am lonely :(

Oooooh.

I dunno if I like the idea of the male protagonist accusing the female-voiced OS of being a whore.

Ending was about right.

All in all, I really enjoyed the movie. Good Job everyone involved.

I thought it was in Taiwan? The bad Azn dudes are speaking in Korean.

What is going on with Peter’s dad?

Interstellar

I've been away for a while, but hey, I saw a movie last night, IN THE THEATER and wanted to talk about it. This is the first movie I have seen in the theater since I went to go see SNOWPIERCER, which I should probably review as well (and also tells the creepy hollywood producers that creep on this blog what kind of movie will get a 18-44 year old male with disposable income and technical know-how over to a movie theater and buying tickets instead of waiting for it on Netflix, CATER TO ME).

I want Wooderson narrating Cosmos.

There were some obvious technical plotholes etc, but overall I liked the movie, it was well-paced.

I’m guessing a lot of people are looking up the fifth dimension on Wikipedia. (A WRINKLE IN TIME?)

There was a tesseract reference. (A WRINKLE IN TIME OR MARVEL?)

Cool visuals, man.

Was trying to figure out what was up on the boards in the theoretical physics realm, didn’t look familiar, looked like applied eigenfunctions to matrices/sets? I kinda forget the technical details of quantum mechanics, and I never really studied it beyond the atom model. (GUESS I AM GOING TO THE LIBRARY)

Three hours felt like a breeze.

My favorite part of the movie is the fundamentalist backlash (THE MOON LANDING WAS FAKED) in the face of impending doom. I was having a conversation with a friend (I could say colleague, but I REALLY FUCKING HATE THAT SNOOTY TERM) this week and he was talking about watching Fox News and how it just made him jittery and scared. Not because of the content/agenda, but just like the way everything is presented left a mark on his psyche, it had a physical effect on him.

Oh and the depiction of the fourth dimensional existence was cool, I could live with a Portal-type game that existed in that “space”.

So, I've been kind of holding off on posting anything about seeing Jack White because well, I guess I wanted it to sink in? Also, I hadn't heard the full album until well after the show. Plus, as I have said many times before, this isn't a music blog.

So, to the music, it is pretty gosh darn good. There isn't a single like "My Doorbell" or "Fell in Love with a Girl", but the record is strong. I can hear the "risks" (I mean, really he is a professional musicians, the biggest risk that he could take would be to completely and utterly alienate all of his fans) that he took with the music. Meaning really, I can hear how it is different than when it was just him and Meg. I was reading something from, I think Steve Hyden, where he was lamenting the old Jack White from the White Stripes. His theory was that the restrictions of playing in a two-piece band, made Jack more creative and also focused. It forced him to play at the boundaries, which weren't that far away from the core, so it became music that was accessible, simple, and yet not like the others.

That theory is probably bullshit.

But you know what? I do kind of believe it. I believe in the Jack White ethos that maybe things were better in the past. At least for "White" people (see what I did there?). He's right, put the camera phone down, enjoy the moment, maybe vinyl is a superior medium for listening to music, and maybe the antebellum South, wait nope.

I went to see him and his band play at a smoking venue. I only make note of that because it had been a while since I had been to an indoor venue that allowed smoking. It had also been a while since I had been to a show, period. I'm not really a show person. I don't like seeing my favorite band every single time they come through town (though I have seen Man Man three times). I have a list, it is a private list, of bands that if they are within a reasonable driving distance, I will go drive to see them. TV on the Radio is on the list. Also it is a mental list, so I am constantly forgetting who else is on the list. Also, it is apparently not so private.

I was there with a friend, slightly older, who had also missed every opportunity to see Jack White, in his life, up to that point. We both would've preferred to see the White Stripes, but understood the unlikeliness of that proposition. We drank beers out of plastic cups, watched younger people misbehave, talked shit, as I like to do. The opening act was fine, if a little boring. The main act was loud. It was a show. It was planned, choreographed, with planned improvisations and a dropped note/line/act or two. It was great. Technically proficient, sustainably loud (fuck you Chrome, Sustainably is a word), and well, no one can say that they were disappointed.

I think the biggest difference between going to a show now and back when I used to go to shows regularly is the way we interact as humans. Back then, maybe it was my youthful ignorance, but it was fun with strangers. Now, people are afraid to touch each other. It felt like being in a room with hundreds of individuals rather than a club where we all liked rock music. Anyway, money well spent, I am pretty sure there is something wrong with my left ear, it wasn't this show, it was a series of shows (but really it was probably that Boris show), but I am not going to get it checked out. Because knowing is half the battle and I don't want to fight.

Spaten beer girl

My roommate during grad school (who was not a grad student, lucky him) introduced me to this beer. We call it the shovel. We liked pretending to be (because we were still basically kids) continental and refined as we drank these by the 12 pack while grilling meats and watching soccer.

I was an asshole back in those days. I was selfish. I didn’t understand how the world worked. I like to think I have slightly improved on all those fronts. I think I can say that I’ve improved because I recognize that I was those things. I am a bunch of other things as well, but I like to focus on the things that have shaped my current existence. If I weren’t those things, I would be in a very different existence currently.

We always got excited when the oktoberfest came out, me because I was attempting to appropriate hip, white, upper middle-class culture, he was “going back to his German roots”. It was a totally excellent (I wrote godsend here originally, but we all know that I don’t believe in god, much less that he would send something, I might as well write Santasend) occurrence when Sam’s Club would stock these so that we could buy these in bulk and for a lower unit price.

I don’t shop at Sam’s Club anymore because a) I don’t have a membership b) I can’t get with corporate ethics. By which I mean the fact that corporate culture is so far removed from their consumers that they can make decisions that reinforce their god (profits) without worrying about any of the consequences. They aren’t individuals, they are just numbers, emptying their wallets at your pyre.

I am trying to find a way to end this post in a meaningful manner, one that wraps up and connects to what I wrote at the beginning. I have a vauge recollection of writing about being in grad school. What I can say is that this piece mirrors my time in grad school. I have something to show for it, I probably learned some stuff, I drank some beer during the time that it occurred and I am still not sure how it added any kind of meaning to my life. Good night.

I promised to not really write too much about music on this site, since well, then it would just be music (I know, it seems like this site is pretty much just movies anyway), but for simple record keeping purposes, I figure I need to write out some comments with regards to this list. Not that I care with or agree or whatever with the particular order or ranking or existence of an album on this list, but ya know, posterity and shit. (Posterity is awfully close to posterior, think about it) So, I own/bought 6 albums on this list. Which out of 75 would seem to be, I dunno, a small number, but considering that the writers/editors of this site felt the need to even narrow down a 6 month's batch of albums down to 75 and actually order them is a sign of the times. There is so much goddamn media to consume. In addition to the 6 albums that I currently own, there are 2-4 other albums on the list, that I have been debating whether or not I want to purchase. There presence on this list kind of pushes me, a little bit, in the direction of wanting to purchase the album. But, I dunno, I try to not let others' opinions influence me too much with this shit. I have enough shit on my plate. Oh what are the albums? The Death of a Rave, Moodymann, In Conflict, Singles, St. Vincent, I Shall Die here. The ones I am thinking about? Pinata, Burn Your Fire For No Witness, Once more Round the Sun. Maybe To be Kind. I mean shit, it is number 1 on the list. Ok, back to living life, not posting.

Broad City

Um, I may have watched the entire first season in a single day. I was bored and the episodes were about the expire on Hulu. It was hilarious. Well most of it. A lot of the humor that didn't work for me was mostly of the "oh, this is so awkward and horrible that it is funny" kind of humor, and for me, it got overwhelmed by my stupid empathetic nature and I just felt horrible for the character.

That said, "Who shit in my shoe?"

Also, I want it to be noted that Hannibal Burress is the best.

Also, it seemed like they were running out of ideas towards the end of the 1st season, which may not bode well for the 2nd season.

As far as the whole "larger meaning"-thing. It is great that there is a sitcom/sketch comedy show that has female main characters and all that jazz. I've never really been a fan of affirmative action in this way, but I do get why it kind of needs to exist. Without it, appropriately diverse pop culture/academia/society would take unnecessarily long to get to its natural balance. Because people in power want to stay there and will stop at nothing to maintain their grip on their position/status. So when they claim that "Oh, those people didn't deserve to be in our club.", just remember that they are distracting you from the real issue. Which is "Why is it a fucking club? Why isn't it just open to everyone?"

BFGoodrich Long Trail T/A All-Season Tire - 265/65R17 110T

Haha, so as I left the theater for X-Men: Days of Future Past, I had a flat. I didn't even notice until I got into the car and started it, and saw a piece of paper in my windshield. I thought it was a ticket, it was a note from someone letting me know that my rear passenger tire was fucked. Thanks rando stranger, I wouldn't have known until I started driving. You gotta be fucking kidding me.

It took me a while, but I changed the flat with my full sized spare. Nobody offered to help, I probably didn't look like I needed help, this was the 2nd time in 4 months that I've had to change a flat. So, I did it and drove straight home.

The next morning, I spend 700 dollars on new tires. It's funny cause, I have been hemming and hawing about getting a new laptop for the past 6 months, but I threw down for the tires immediately.

I have spent a lot of lot of money the past couple weeks. Flights, new tires, parking for the job and insurance. Like damn. Need what we need, I guess.

X-Men: Days of Future Past

First of all, Best Comic Book cover ever?

Second, I'm gonna talk about the movie. It was really good. I really really really liked it. Probably my favorite comic book movie since 1999, and I really really liked Avengers and the Dark Knight. So first of all, why did I go see it? Why is that a relevant question? I rarely go see movies in the theater. Or at least, that would be accurate to say about my recent relationship with movie theaters. But, the roof in my apartment was leaking, I was bored and I dunno, I wanted to see the storyline play out on the big screen. So I ran a few errands and headed over to the Drafthouse. First of all, greatest theater chain ever. Great service, decent food selection and I dunno, comfortable. It is about the movie there. I saw it in 3-d and goddamn if the special effects were fucking awesome in 3-d.

The only thing that bothered me was the non-canonical Kitty Pryde powers. Otherwise, good shit. Good action, good choices of using Warpath and Blink and Bishop. The Sentinels were appropriately designed. Oh, one other thing that bothered me, the obfuscation of the link between the idea of mutant DNA and robotics. Boo, bad movie science.

So I ate a veggie plate with hummus. It was delicious and I drank a Negroni. The worst thing was when I left, I had a flat. Which, fuck. I'll talk about that in my next post.

I missed the after-credit sequence (I had to pee), but I read about them and well, hmm, interesting.

Citizen Men's BM8180-03E Eco-Drive Canvas Strap Watch

This is my weekend watch. I tend to wear it on the weekends and because I know it is an Eco-Drive, I normally let my arm hang out of the car, while driving, so that it can get the sunlight it needs. This behavior has followed regardless of whether or not I am wearing this watch.

As a result, I have the trucker tan. Which is different than the farmer's tan, which I also have. I didn't notice I had the trucker's tan until I was hanging out in a "colleague's" office. Under the artificial fluorescent lights, it is super noticeable. She was being nice, she asked "do you normally drive with the windows open?". And I was very confused because that is not at all a normal topic of conversation. And then I looked at my arms and, welp, there it was.

I like this watch. I have even gotten a compliment on it, which felt good. I rarely get compliments on my fashion choices. Hm.. I am not sure if that is a good thing/bad thing or if I care. I just kind of said it. I am going to think about that, maybe sleep on it and decide how I ultimately feel.

New Belgium Brewery Gift Set (Set of Four)

I remember being really excited in anticipation of New Belgium being distributed over to the East Coast. And then it happened. And then I was able to continue to live my life and it turned out to have very little effect on the way I lived my life even if you just consider my life drinking beer.

It is amazing how much the fact that I couldn't have it (legally, sort of) really had an outsized effect on my desire for that product. Well, I guess it isn't amazing, it is pretty standard.

Anyway, the end result was that the New Belgium beers are pretty good, but like not the pee your pants good that I was expecting. Which is funny, to me. This one in particular was an OK drink, but I find that drinking a six-packs worth is pretty overwhelming nowadays. I'd rather just have 2. So, I go to World Market and build my own six-packs now.
