Cain’s grin curled up at the edges, almost predatory in his delight. Not malicious, but a hint too wide and with a hint of too many teeth. His eyes sparkled something fierce as his all but son struggled against the attention.

He moved his hand up to try and ruffle the teen’s hair, something almost affectionate in the gesture. Empty, like a hollow echo where once there would have been a genuine emotion. A well that had once fueled a village, now run dry and the houses long abandoned, its pail rocking forlornly in the dry breeze.
