"oh, buddy." he lets out a soft chuckle, patting ryders shoulder as if something is funny. when it comes to parenting he's not exactly the best, but he does try his hardest. and if there's one thing ted does well it's show up. if one of the kids in his care (read: anyone pete is friends with) is in danger, ted will be there in a heartbeat. "you're pretty predictable." not exactly, not really. but he's just a little like how ted was at that age, has a couple of qualities that ted is very familiar with. ted knows this part of town, knows the rumors that go around, the kind of sketchy parties high schoolers tend to end up at. in truth, he would never step foot on this street if ryder wasn't here. he may be an adult, but he didn't exactly grow up, left with a lingering discomfort around things he'd once been afraid of. "plus, i track all you kids' phones." said dismissively, as if its a totally normal thing for a parent to do. and maybe it is, but ted isnt technically a parent in this situation. liam told him he could do it, if that makes ryder feel any better. "you should not be out here, alright? there are some absolute freaks on this side of town, okay, like, you would not believe. even that homeless guy won't come down here and I've seen him do some fucked up shit."

Ryder is less confused about how @hatchethawked knew where he would be and more confused as to why he would care. It seems like the sort of thing that the older might have encouraged, actually, before he realized that parents-slash-guardians should not be encouraging underage partying and drinking. Still, his expression scrunches up into one of mild confusion as Ted pats at his shoulder before green hues roll at the follow up comment. "That doesn't explain how you knew that I'd be here. Specifically." Ryder himself probably would not have been caught on this side of town if it had not been for Steph inviting him along to this party. Something about enjoying a bit of teenage rebellion or something. It is less of a rebellion on his part, though, since his actual authority figure does not care where he is or what he is doing. But Ted, someone that he has known for only a couple of months, cares enough to come track him down. "You what?!" The shock of the words seems to snap him back to reality as eyes narrow at the other. He is already plotting on how to get ahold of Ted's phone to turn that off. "You're making it sound so dramatic. People are just freaked out by the ghost stories around these places."

It has only been ten or eleven hours since the end of his forty-eight hours shift and the majority of that time is spent asleep. A routine, of sorts, for Ryder after the first couple of months of working at the 118. He always saved that first night after a longer shift ordering takeout before crawling into bed, belly full and body exhausted, to curl up in his comforter and be dead to the world for an unspecified amount of time. It is by pure luck that the sound of his phone chiming (and that he even had the volume on to begin with) manages to rouse him. A hand blindly gropes around his mattress to find where said phone had ended up, eyes squinting against the sudden onslaught of brightness. His eyes barely focus enough for him to make out the message before he is sending out a quick response.

It is funny how things can sneak up on you out of nowhere. The trauma that you swear that you have gotten over, experiences you try so hard to forget, until something happens that makes you realize that you are wrong. That you brain and body are hard wired to react to certain stimuli like it is suddenly a life or death situation now. Ryder cannot help the burning, white hot, sense of shame that festers under his chest beneath the panic as @hatchethawked words break through the animal reaction. It is the sudden realization that he is still not over what had happened at Nightwing despite the over decade and a half that has passed since then.

“I am,” Ryder begins before something seizes the words from him. It takes another moment or so of him breathing before he able to shake his head, figuratively and literally shaking things off, before his focus returns to Kurt. “I am calm now… I just got spooked is all.”
