On August 22, 2025, Iryna Zarutska, a 23 year old Ukrainian refugee living in Charlotte, was fatally stabbed while riding the city’s light rail. After finishing her work shift, she boarded the train, where a man sitting behind her suddenly pulled out a knife and stabbed her multiple times. She collapsed and died at the scene. The attacker left the train but was arrested minutes later on the platform.

The suspect was identified as Decarlos Brown Jr., 34, who has schizophrenia and a long criminal history with more than a dozen prior arrests for violent and property crimes. At the time of the attack, he was free on cashless bail.

Iryna would have been alive if this sick violent monster wasn't released time after time - the judicial system allowed her life to be stolen when it was just beginning.
