The Internet - “Girl” (Prod by Kaytranada)
[2015]
Dat’s .... da yute’n’em... *DMX voice*
This Tyler, he gets it and he’s working.
“I loved music. I loved it more than I love it now. But I think that can happen with anything. You can live in New York for 10 years and say, ‘I now want to move to San Francisco.’ It's just harder for me to do music now, period. It's easier for people who focus on it all day and who are younger in their concept of what they want to do with it. I am not what I would consider truly a musician. I am an inventor. I am an innovator.”
Kinda gives me the sads when Kanye says stuff like this. I guess there’s not enough time in the day to be a groundbreaking musician whilst being a Dad, Husband, burgeoning top-tier clothing designer, aspiring Walt Disney/Steve Jobs-level innovator... But good for him, exploring and creatively building in other lanes.

At 6:30 pm today I had a full-blown meltdown in public watching this. So spot-on. Ira Glass just became an inspiration and a gas station to me.
I hope no one saw me. Pretty sure someone saw me.
See you at HeTellStories on Monday. New work on the way.

I've been thinking a lot about my job as an entertainment journalist and cultural critic. I've been asking myself, "How do I feel about criticizing art? What does that do for me? How much energy have I wasted on talking about things I don't like?"
I've never met a new person in real life, realized I didn't like them and then gone on Twitter or a major publication to write about how terrible a person they. "XYZ has seven teeth, an ugly spirit and doesn't live up to who I thought they are." Nah, that's corny.
But I've done that with movies and albums. I know for sure that I've hurt major artists' feelings by bashing their projects. And in retrospect, I'm not really proud of any of those slam pieces--not even the ones that got heavy traffic on websites or that racked up favorites and retweets when I shot them out of my 140-character cannon. With art--fashion, music, TV, film, paintings/sculptures etc...--I'm on a new wave. If I like/love something, I'm going to spread the sentiment. If I don't, it doesn't exist. I'm not hating on art. Come on, it's art! We're not talking about politics or justice. It's starting to feel silly to me.
I like looking at this like old heads used to say the best way to deal with bullies is: ignore them. If I stop addressing people that make art I don't like, maybe they'll just shrivel up and stop. Or even better, maybe they'll try harder to make a positive impact and move their listeners/viewers to say great things next go 'round.
This could all just be wishful thinking. Whatever. I'm just starting to feel like putting down art isn't a purposeful existence. I'd rather make a "Best Albums/Shoes/Movies of the Week" or something list and "diss" by omission. Kind of like when you don't invite someone to a party they'd probably like to attend. But I'm not going to write an essay or review about why I didn't let them in anymore.

p.s. - i used the picture above of kanye west's new adidas sneakers, because i think they're dope AF imho. they're getting a lot of attention. much love and much hate. i'm over here like, "why waste your hot air on hating, bruh?"
