We all want to believe that we would always do the right thing, whether it’s standing on the front lines at the Battle of Hogwarts, signing up for the DA, or just telling off someone who used the word “mudblood.”

It’s easy to make ourselves believe that if we were in that world, we would make the right choices and choose the right side.

And it’s equally easy to condemn Ron as weak, selfish, and unworthy of Hermione and Harry’s friendship. How dare he doubt Harry? How dare he think about his stomach when there are horcruxes to hunt? How dare he succumb to his personal insecurities? Can’t he see the bigger picture?

Ron isn’t perfect. He can be insecure, insensitive and obtuse. He talks with his mouth full and isn’t at the top of the class.

But maybe deep down, we worry that Ron, despite all of his flaws, might still be a better person than we are.

Maybe we worry that we wouldn’t have done this:

Over and over again, Ron is faced with a choice between doing what’s right and doing what’s easy. And despite the accusations of laziness and selfishness from his critics, Ron chooses what’s right. Over and over and over and over again.

Sometimes he’s jealous. Sometimes he’s obtuse. But I can only hope that someday I can be as brave and loyal and strong as Ron Weasley.

JK Rowling did something incredible with Harry Potter: she presented grey characters to a young audience. The series has an obvious good x bad dynamic, but some very important people are grey: James, Sirius, Dumbledore, Snape. You can get angry and call me names all you want, but it’s a fact that the four of them did very good and very bad things in canon. Some did more bad, others did more good, but they’re neither angels, nor devils, all of them. And there’s a great lesson in this that, based on some confessions, many clearly don’t understand yet. That life is complex. Everyone is multidimensional. In real life, everyone is grey. The people you love, your favorite people they can also do wrong, commit crimes, they most likely already did hurt someone real badly some day. And this should help you learn not to completely vilify people, because you don’t know what they’re going through and how they got where they are, and because in most cases redemption is possible. Learning and changing is possible. I’m not saying that hurting people shouldn’t be frowned upon, it should, it has to be judged and fought against. But UNDERSTANDING the context, the people involved is so important. This is why we don’t simply kill off everyone that makes a mistake. Yes, we all have light and dark inside us. Going between them is a matter of choice, but note this: some get that choice easily delivered to them, while others struggle. Learn to understand the struggles. We don’t get the same conditions in life.
