in all this negativity, I do just want to say that in my opinion Gaten, Caleb and Sadie gave incredible performances and donāt get enough credit.
Last season the Duffers hyped up Finnās performance in the love confession but (and I donāt mean any offence to Finn here) Gaten, Caleb and Sadieās performances in the finale were much more impressive.
And really if it was anyoneās season this season, it was Gatenās. I hope he stays booked and busy
Duffer Brothers managed to fuck up this show so bad that people genuinely believe the finale was a fake out and that they will have a secret episode 9 which will change everything.
If i was the writers of this show id kill myself knowing i let people down enough to the point of delusion
I wanted to point out some of Mike's reactions throughout the whole time he was at the hospital.
In this scene his voice shakes. He is clearly frustrated, angry about everything that is happening, confused.
Mike is clearly in shock after what happened. We can see it in his facial expressions, the way his eyebrows move, his body language. He is feeling so much.
He is trying so hard to keep composed.
He is swallowing and there are so many microexpressions of distress and worry as Nancy explains how they could have done something to keep their family safe and how Vecna had already told her all of what was happening would happen. He is in distress. He is so scared.
He is so happy and relieved when Karen wakes up.
And he keeps looking worried and concerned throughout the whole scene.
He can express so much without words. It has already been pointed out how amazing Finn's acting and microexpressions are. In previous seasons too, the both subtle and non-subtle emotional cues are there. He conveys them so well.
We have seen how he can portray Mike having a mental breakdown in season 2. It was such a raw and heartbreaking scene and you can feel Mike's pain.
In season 5 Mike mentions how he also gets scared to Holly.
"So whenever I'm feeling frightened or nervous, I just imagine that he's at my side, and I feel better."
He gives Holly her own Holly the Heroic miniature for when she gets scared too which is an amazing and beautiful scene of bonding between the two. He is trying to share with Holly what gives him strength in the face of fear.
"But Mike the Brave is never scared."
Even though he is scared, Mike is trying to not show it as much as he can and he has been trying not to for years. It is not only the trauma but also his role as the leader of the party. He is the heart. And he feels a responsibility to protect others, to be there for them.
Mike is severely traumatized. He has been through so much at such a young age. He wants to protect others, he is deeply empathetic, he cares deeply for people and he has also been through the trauma of almost losing people he loves in previous seasons. Everything that has happened in season 5 so far with the attack on his parents and Holly triggered that trauma, all that fear once again.
We are certainly going to see him reach a breaking point in season 5, after such a long time without seeing his POV and the full range of his emotions and as his character arc develops even more. It is going to be so heartbreaking to watch him break down and also knowing the signs he will get vecna'd (his trauma, internalised homophobia, fears and insecurities being used against him) are there. So much can happen in the next episodes that could inflict even more trauma on him.
There is also the possibility there could be a fake death scenario involving Will like some other people have speculated and it could parallel Will's fake death in season 1. We are going to be able to see so much of Mike's emotions this season after they have been repressed for so long and I just know I will be an emotional wreck when he has a mental breakdown after so long.
He has been carrying so much weight on his shoulders from a very young age: his trauma, dealing with almost losing people he loves, internalised homophobia, living in a conservative town where he has been bullied his whole life. He won't be able to keep all his emotions repressed for much longer and so much in the following episodes could make them come out in full force.
