2011 | Noel Gallagher press conference and subsequent events
―July 6, 2011: Noel Gallagher press conference
The press conference video posted on Noel Gallagher's official YouTube account has some parts that were deleted after he was sued for false statements, so here is a summary of Noel Gallagher's claims regarding the breakup of Oasis:
“It all started when Liam launched his own clothing line and wanted to put Pretty Green in the Oasis tour book . I thought it was wrong of him to try to sell his clothes to our fans and we had a huge fight about it. Eventually I asked him how much I would pay him to put Pretty Green in the tour book and he went crazy. It was a slow downward spiral from there.”
“ Liam would claim it was laryngitis, but he missed the Chelmsford show at V Festival because he was hungover. There was a lot of bad press at the time and I think Liam thought I was some kind of puppet master of the British press. When we got to Paris [for the Rock en Seine show], Liam started yelling at me the names of reporters – some of whom are here now and some I’ve never met.”
Using Oasis to sell clothes to fans, and deceiving and disappointing fans with fake laryngitis - both of Noel Gallagher's claims are intentional remarks intended to blame Liam for Oasis's breakup and create the image that he deceived the fans . Despite the fact that these claims have already been proven false not only by Liam himself, but also by the testimonies of other members who had been in Oasis together, and even by Noel Gallagher himself, at the time, Liam Gallagher had to take all the criticism from the public and Oasis fans, and Beady Eye also had a difficult start amidst the criticism and prejudice.
―August 12, 2011: The Japan Times Interview with Andy Bell ⁰¹
One of the biggest differences between the disbanded Oasis and the democratically run BDI was that all BDI members had a say. When asked about the Noel Gallagher press conference in an interview with The Japan Times, Andy Bell said:
“ Noel has lied about a lot of things. The Pretty Green altercation was a lie, the V Festival claim that Liam’s laryngitis was fake was a lie – maybe he wants to believe it. I don’t know what’s going on in his head. I’m not particularly disappointed because I know who he is. That’s just the way he is. I know how Noel manipulates the press. He’s been using the press for years. For us, interviews and press were secondary, but for Noel Gallagher, it was his life.”

―August 19, 2011: Liam Gallagher releases statement ⁰² and Noel Gallagher sues
Liam sent a letter to Noel Gallagher demanding a formal apology for the false statements made in the press conference , but was completely ignored, so he finally took the drastic step of filing a lawsuit. After taking legal action, Liam sent his statement to The Sun. The full text is as follows:
“I have taken legal action against Noel Gallagher for claiming that my 2009 V Festival Chelmsford gig was cancelled because of my hangover. Noel’s claims are false and I want to make sure that Oasis fans and those who attended V Festival know the truth.
I was devastated when I couldn't do the show because I didn't want to disappoint the fans. The truth is that I was diagnosed with laryngitis by the doctor and Noel was fully aware of this that morning.
Noel also falsely claimed that a huge fight that broke out between me and Oasis over my request to have my clothing brand Pretty Green advertised in the Oasis tour program book led to the demise of Oasis. The truth is that there was no such argument or conflict between Noel and me.
I am used to hearing all sorts of things from Noel, and I have said things about him in the past, but this latest outrageous claim from Noel is beyond the realm of rock and roll jokes, and it calls into question my professionalism.
“I have tried to resolve this peacefully, but at this point I have no choice but to take legal action. All I ask is an apology.”

―August 20, 2011: The Sun’s Gordon Smart column “Liam Gallagher: I’m V Sick.”
The day after Liam's statement was released, Gordon Smart of The Sun ran a photo of Liam with fans after his Staffordshire gig on the 22nd with the headline "Liam Gallagher: I'm V-sick " , focusing on the fact that Liam was holding a can of beer.
“When a bad sore throat is tickling the back of your tongue, there’s nothing better than a can of stout.”
“It’s 3am and Liam Gallagher is doing a bit of self-medication with a pint of Guinness in a chilly Staffordshire field with fans. This picture was taken just hours before he disappointed thousands of Oasis fans by cancelling his appearance at the 2009 V Festival in Chelmsford. He was clearly not feeling well.”
The Sun also provided strong support for Noel Gallagher's claim that Liam had been diagnosed with laryngitis, adding, through an anonymous source who may or may not be real, that Liam had been partying all night and drinking heavily, and that "there didn't seem to be anything wrong with his voice. " A footnote to the article at the time was even more blatant and malicious in its attempt to confuse the public.
“The medical certificate… I think Liam’s letter (to the doctor) would have been like this: Doctor, as you can see, I’m not feeling very well. Can you give me permission to rest?”

―August 22, 2011: Noel Gallagher apologizes during a web chat event with Matt Morgan
“Let me be clear, it’s true that Liam has been diagnosed with laryngitis and I have a doctor’s note to prove it . If my comments offended Liam, I apologize. It’s all just getting ridiculous and out of control. It’s not cool.”
Even though he tried to cover up his lies by mobilizing The Sun, Noel Gallagher eventually admitted that it was a lie, and the relevant part was deleted from the press conference video uploaded to Noel Gallagher's official YouTube account. What Liam wanted was an official apology , but Noel Gallagher managed to get away with it during a web chat event with fans, saying that he apologized if he was offended . He even added the irresponsible comment that the controversy would not have started if he had not lied, but that the situation was becoming ridiculous and uncool. Despite this, Liam dropped the lawsuit against Noel Gallagher.
The Pretty Green statement was also buried without an apology as the controversy grew over the lie about the cancellation of the V Festival appearance - which was denied by not only Liam but also Andy, who was in Oasis. In an October 2021 Matt Morgan podcast, Noel Gallagher revealed a completely different story to what he had claimed in 2011.
“Liam had packed us up with Pretty Green clothes, not just for me, but for the band. I went straight to the charity shop and left them on the doorstep. He was furious. He was like, ‘If you didn’t want it, you should have just told me, you punk.’ There was a Pretty Green dress hanging on a mannequin in Barnardo’s a month before Pretty Green opened. That was the beginning of it all. ” ⁰⁴

Many of Noel Gallagher's interviews during the Oasis era were hate campaigns against Liam , and were later proven to be false. The latter half of Oasis and the 2011 press conference statements that are the focus of this article are just the tip of the iceberg. Stories that are intentionally distorted without even knowing whether they are true or not - and to this day, some people use Noel Gallagher's interviews to mislead fans with selective information.
Gordon Smart has revealed that he and Noel Gallagher had a falling out four or five years ago and lost touch. It's a good thing he's been away from the Sun since leaving in late 2016, when he was on Radio X and podcasting, and was busy dissing Liam alongside Matt Morgan. But who will be the next Gordon Smart?
As of 2025, The Sun still regularly publishes tabloid articles citing sources close to the brothers and insiders about the reunion of the band. Not only did they write sensational articles about the reunion, but they also took pains to remind the public of the sibling feud that escalated into a brawl between the brothers. Of course, it’s impossible to say for sure who is leaking information about the truth or otherwise at this point. But it’s important to remember that whenever the relationship between the brothers deteriorates, the tabloids have always played a pivotal role in the relationship, and they are always ready to step in.
As the reunion tour is nearing, I can only hope that Noel seriously thought about what needs to be done to avoid repeating the same past
