Viren is intriguing as a ‘villain’ and all that, but what’s interesting to me is his dynamic with Harrow

I’m not gonna do any analysis though because I’m tired. Except to say that Viren had a very ‘making excuses’/‘I thought of this on the spot’ sort of tone specifically about the word brother

Long story short, I think Viren had a lot of unspoken feelings for Harrow, specifically not brotherly ones, and that’s part of why Viren and his ex wife used to argue; he thought he could hack it with her, but it was clear to her that he didn’t love her the way he loved Harrow

I’ve definitely wondered about that! He launches season 2′s flashback with this:

he was a beautiful, young king--UHWITHABEAUTIFULFAMILY!

as though he’s been fixated on this guy since like forever.

If he’d been straight up a terrible parent, I suspect his wife would’ve taken the kids, but Claudia’s line about her mom wanting to find her own happiness makes it sound a bit more personal, like the weight of Viren’s feelings eventually became too much to bear.

Well, now he has more time to hopelessly pine... Not that Harrow’s disinterested:

Harrow’s been trying:

H: Viren, didn't I tell you if you ever woke me up this early again... I'd have you executed?

V: [clears throat] I'll give you a moment.

Here’s a Sarai-approved Violent Pickup Line if I ever heard one! This gets a choke and faint blush from Viren--a personal moment Viren quickly recovers from out of misplaced propriety (plus, there’s elf business).

Viren’s self-worth is terminally low; the idea that Harrow could want him for more than his basic usefulness and unwavering loyalty is inconceivable. This misunderstanding builds into the high-stress argument before the assassination: Harrow wants to spend his last hours with Viren, while Viren is still hung-up on his magical machinations.

Harrow didn’t flip his late wife’s picture face-down so he could look at a literal snake in a basket... but he also hadn’t been very clear about his desires and expectations up to that point, either.

My guess is that Harrow got a hold of himself and apologized after we cut away from their fight. This would renew Viren’s belief that Harrow is a king worthy of admiration, and might contextualize Viren’s now near-feverish commitment to preserving Harrow’s legacy in regards to Katolis (and the human realms).

so i’m watching avatar the last airbender again because of fucking course i am and after zuko beats katara at the north pole he tells her “you rise with the moon. i rise with the sun” so now i’m convinced zuko is the most insufferable morning person ever and katara makes coffee at 9pm.
