Maiden spirit mask (agbogho mmuo) of the Igbo people, Nigeria. Carved from wood and decorated with white paint. Artist unknown; 19th century. Now in the Brooklyn Museum. Photo credit: Brooklyn Museum.
The people were not ready to open their eyes or minds to information that challenged the viewpoints of powerful religions which completely dominated their thinking. It was quickly learned that the people of Earth were too insecure in their spiritual development to take responsibility for themselves. They found it easier to cling to myths, or folk stories of gods who would take care of them, providing an excuse for the many difficulties and problems in life. Humans must learn that never can a “god” control the destiny or fate of the human being.
