Tips for Finding Clearance Jewelry Armoires
Jewelry armoires are large, furniture-sized jewelry boxes that can store a huge number of pieces. If you're shopping for a jewelry armoire, clearance sales can help you save a lot of money. Jewelry armoires are nearly indispensable if you have a large jewelry collection, but they can be quite expensive. Learn how to find the best deals.
How Clearance Works
Armoires are available at many price points. A handcrafted, all-wood, Amish jewelry armoire can easily cost more than a thousand dollars, and a melamine or laminated wood version can cost less than a hundred dollars. If you're able to find these pieces on clearance, you may see significant savings.
You're probably familiar with clearance sales at your local department store. Shopping these sales can help you save on everything from clothing to housewares, and jewelry armoires are no exception. Understanding how these sales work can help you make sure you time your shopping properly.
Clearance sales help retailers clear their shelves of excess inventory. These sales can happen for a variety of reasons:
A line of armoires has been discontinued, so the retailer needs to clear out the stock.
A retailer ordered too many armoires, and they are having trouble selling them.
A store is going out of business, so it needs to sell the armoires at a reduced price.
A big holiday has just passed, and the retailer needs to sell leftover jewelry armoires.
Typically, prices on clearance armoires will be reduced by between 20 and 90 percent. Shopping clearance sales takes a little skill, but it's a great way to save money on jewelry storage pieces.
Finding Jewelry Armoire Bargains
Getting a good deal on a clearance jewelry armoire is all about timing. Here are a few tips for getting the most for your money:
Many people purchase jewelry armoires as gifts for Valentine's Day or Christmas, so it pays to shop clearance sales right after these holidays. Early January can be a good time to get the after-Christmas deals, but you'll probably have even better luck in late February or early March.
If there's a particular armoire you have your eye on, you may want to check the manufacturer's website for new models. When a new model comes out, the price of the existing model may drop significantly. This drop will be even more extreme if the old model is discontinued.
Keep an eye on furniture store sales. These stores often sell armoires, and you can find some great deals in the scratch and dent section at the back of most stores. These armoires may be slightly damaged, but they are usually easy to fix with a touch-up pen or some new hardware. You might save as much as 75 percent off the original price.
Watch your local newspaper for coupons and sale ads from stores that sell jewelry armoires. Sometimes these advertised clearance sales can mean big savings for you.
Peruse Internet sites that specialize in over-stocked or discounted merchandise. You might find an armoire for a fraction of the regular price.
Other Ways to Save
If you're looking for a deal on a jewelry armoire, clearance sales aren't the only way to save. You might also be able to find a used armoire for a discounted price. Look at garage sales, flea markets, and thrift stores for the best deals. Also check out furniture consignment shops and classified ads. Whether you choose to get a new armoire from a clearance sale or buy a used piece, you'll find these items are extremely useful for storing and organizing your jewelry collection. Jared and James Allen Open Concept Store Together
He went to Jared. And James Allen, too.
On Dec. 7, two brands owned by Signet Jewelers, Jared and e-tailer James Allen, opened their first concept store together in Frederick, Md. (pictured).
James Allen, which Signet bought in 2017, is based in Frederick.
The new Jared x James Allen store will occupy 4,245 square feet just outside of the cityâs Francis Scott Key Mall. That is somewhat smaller than a traditional Jared location, which has an area of approximately 6,000 square feet, says Signet vice president of corporate affairs David Bouffard.
The new store features what it calls a âmodern, warm, and relaxedâ environment.
Differences from the standard store include a coffee bar, which also serves treats, and a James Allen Gathering Table (pictured, below) that lets consumers touch and try on replica rings. In addition, instead of the traditional case displays, the new store lets customers walk around the display for a full view from all angles. Jewelry consultants work side by side with guests rather than in the traditional behind-the-case position.

If You Buy One Thing Today, Make It These Everyday Hoops
Last Christmas, my aunt gave me a pair of shiny, gold oval hoops from Mejuri. I put them on straight out of the box, and they immediately caught the roomâs attention: Everyone from my (discerning) teenage cousin to my (even more discerning) grandmother began complimenting them. Itâs been nearly one year since I slipped the Mejuris into my earlobes, and Iâm here to tell you two things: (1) the compliments have not stopped, and (2) I havenât taken them off.
In the past, my earrings have typically come from my mother â Iâd âborrowâ (take from her drawer without permission) her special pieces from the â70s and â80s and spend my days worrying about them falling out. Iâve considered splurging on a vintage solid-gold pair from New Top Jewelry or Popular Jewelry, but they were just too expensive â plus, I figured, Iâd worry endlessly about losing those, too. The Mejuris, I realized as soon as I put them on, were the perfect earring solution: They have the look and heft of vintage gold (hence the constant compliments from friends and strangers alike), but theyâre comfortable for day-to-day wear (they are, in fact, gold vermeil, meaning theyâre made out of sterling silver and are coated with a thick layer of 18-karat gold). Plus, theyâre extremely affordable (under $100 even when itâs not a major shopping holiday), which mostly means I can live my life without worrying constantly about losing them.
This Cyber Monday, Mejuri is offering 10 percent off one item, 15 percent off two, and 20 percent off three items or more, which brings the cost of these already attainable hoops down to the low, low price of $63. Itâs also the brandâs only sale of the year, so this is the cheapest theyâre going to be for the foreseeable future. Buying jewelry can be intimidating, but these hoops are absolutely foolproof.

Roll up, roll up for a fun-fair of fine jewellery
Iâm convinced 2019 will go down in history as an especially testing year, and in these times of uncertainty, nothing beats a big dose of fun. I love jewels that make me smile and I admire the designers who prefer not to take themselves too seriously. If I had the choice of owning a pair of huge diamond earrings or a magic mushroom pendant (below), it would be the latter every time.Â
New Yorker Alison Chemla has been a firm favourite with Millennials since she launched her label Alison Lou in 2012. She started out with a cute emoji-inspired collection and has been putting the fun into fine jewellery ever since with her candy-coloured creations. There is a wide-eyed innocence to everything she designs, shot through with a wicked sense of humour. Case in point, her new Pill by the Yard jewels  â a cheeky hat-tip to Elsa Perettiâs iconic Diamonds by the Yard for Tiffany.
To tap into the minds of Millennials, it helps to be one. Bursting onto the fine jewellery scene earlier this year, EĂRA was founded by two young friends who grew up in the midst of the Milan fashion scene. Their debut collection is based on a very simple premise: each jewel features a simple snap hook (above) similar to the one you find on a carabiner, making it transformable. I recommend checking out the neon earrings for a jolt of 80s euphoria.Â
Infused with a happy kind of nostalgia, whimsical jewels inspired by childhood memories are the definition of fun. Brent Nealeâs gem-set magic mushroom pendant, in the palest lavender blue chalcedony, is pure fairy tale, or slip into Aron & Hirshâs mystical circus universe with the Brazilian designersâ prancing pony earrings (top). I was totally charmed when I first set eyes on Alina Abeggâs new Sugar High collection (above), inspired by the designerâs favourite sweets. The orange moonstone lollipop pendant has a carved raised line around the middle, a perfect replica of this most classic of confectionaries. Â And you can taste the nostalgia of girlie sleepovers, accompanied by a huge bag of popcorn, in Luz Caminoâs hyper-realistic stud earrings.
Bibi van der Velden delivers a cuteness overload with one of my favourite jewels featured here â an incredibly lifelike millipede ring (below), with a carved chrysoprase head, that wraps its pleasingly plump form around the finger, its segmented body set with multi-coloured gemstones.
Meanwhile, Daniela Villegas, who has a knack for transforming the beastliest of bugs into the most adorable jewels, focusses her attention on birds with her Do Re Mi earrings (below), the name inspired by the stars of the show: two lovable dodos.Â
For a more grown-up take on fun fine jewellery, RetrouvaĂ has blown up a pair of gold XO stud earrings (below) and adorned them with on-trend black onyx polka dots, while Glenn Spiro proves that playfulness is always welcome, even in the rarefied world of high jewellery. Snow set with vibrant pink sapphires, his supersized Clover Leaf stud earrings are crafted from titanium, which means they are light as a feather to wear, not to mention enormous fun. Â

Baselword 2019 Wrap-Up
Breaking Down Baselworld 2019
Each season, Baselworld seems to be shifting just as quickly as the industry at large. In 2018, the Swiss watch powerhouse The Swatch Group announced their exit from the show. In addition, there were a number of brands who opted to exhibit at the SIHH in Geneva earlier this year. As a result, Baselworld 2019 was certainly a bit smaller than past seasons. However, this presented both the exhibition and the exhibitors a unique opportunity to hone their focus.
Despite the constant flux in the industry, thereâs no shortage of fantastic watches debuting. At the end of the day, the watches are what really matter, right? We were excited to see some of our favorite watchmakers continuing to up the ante with their latest creations. Here, weâve rounded up a few of our top brands and the exciting new offerings theyâve presented for 2019.
Rolex
Rolex introduced an astounding number of new releases at Baselworld this year. Here, we saw updated additions to their fan favorite lines: the Yacht-Master, Sea-Dweller, GMT-Master II, Day-Date, Datejust, and Daytona. First, the brand launched a new sailing watch: the Yacht-Master 42, Reference 226659. The model is the first 42mm time and date Yacht-Master to join the family of watches. It also comes complete with an all-new matte black Cerachrom bezel.
Next up is the Sea-Dweller introduced in a two-tone steel and yellow gold Rolesor variation. The Reference 126603 is essentially the same as the Reference 126600 released in 2017 but in a brand new colorway. Then we have two new iterations of the GMT-Master II. The Reference 126710 offers a new style combination with a two-tone blue and black âBatmanâ bezel and a Jubilee bracelet. Thereâs also the Reference 126719, which features a totally new look for the collection. It boasts a white gold construction and a unique Meteorite dial, appearing for the first time on the GMT. This model showcases the beloved, two-tone red and blue âPepsiâ bezel and comes equipped with an Oyster bracelet.
Rolex also unveiled several new iterations of the Day-Date. The next generation is available in either 18-karat yellow or everose gold with distinctive green or brown ombre dials respectively. In addition, thereâs a new Rainbow Day-Date, Reference 128345. Next, we have three new versions of the Datejust. First, there are two variants of the 36mm. They come in a choice of white gold or Rolesor and a black sunray finish dial or white mother of pearl dial with diamond hour markers. Finally, Rolex takes a fresh spin on the 31mm Datejust, also in two options. You can select from an olive-green sunray finish dial with contrasting yellow gold hour markers. Or, thereâs a rose sunray finish dial with monochromatic rose gold hour markers. Last but not least is the latest variation of the Cosmograph Daytona. This ornate model features an elaborate dial with pave diamonds and black lacquer.
OMEGA
Unlike Rolex, OMEGA focused their energy on presenting one showstopper at Baselworld 2019. Here, they debuted the Speedmaster Apollo 11 Anniversary Limited Edition. The model pays tribute to the 50th anniversary of the mission. Gold traditionally corresponds to the celebration of a 50th anniversary. So, it was only fitting the brand make the commemorative model in a new gold alloy theyâve dubbed âMoonshine Gold.â The metal uses additional palladium, which can help to combat the discoloration that sometimes occurs in typical yellow gold. Gold continues to be a theme on the dial, which is also solid gold. Inside, this Speedy is equally impressive. Youâll find the brandâs in-house, hand-wound Master Chronometer 3861 with METAS certification. You can view it in all its glory through the sapphire caseback. Surrounding it is commemorative text along with proportionate renderings of the Earth and Moon orbiting the movement.
Breitling
Breitling also showcased a diverse lineup at Baselworld with new additions to three of their collections. First, they released five new iterations of the iconic Navitimer. The Navitimer 1 Automatic 41 is available in four new references and varieties. Overall, the model has the same aesthetic as the 38mm Navitimer the brand debuted in 2018. However, this time itâs on a larger scale and available in a ton of style options.
You can choose from stainless steel or two-tone stainless steel and rose gold. There are also silver, blue, black, and carbon dial options in addition to a bracelet or alligator strap in a number of colors. Then, thereâs the limited edition Reference 806 1959 Re-Edition. As the name suggests, this re-issue echoes the design of the model from 1959. Here, the devil is in the details. Elements like the Plexiglas crystal and beaded bezel closely mimic the original. However, there are some modern updates, like the COSC certified chronograph movement and increased water resistance.Next, Breitling launches five new variations of the Superocean. In addition to a similar array of style options, the most notable feature is the range of sizes. The brand is offering the latest Superocean in 36, 42, 44, 46, and 48mm versions. Finally, Breitling commemorates their partnership with the British motorcycle company Norton with the Premier B01 Chronograph 42 Norton Edition. The 42mm model is the flagship of the brandâs new Premier collection. It features a two-register chronograph dial and transparent caseback showcasing the self-winding Breitling Manufacture Caliber 01.
TAG Heuer
TAG Heuer displayed a nice balance at this yearâs exhibition, from a vintage reissue to an updated smartwatch. The brand also celebrates a 50th anniversary this year for the Monaco with a reissue. In addition, TAG Heuer has built out the Autavia line with a whopping seven new references. The all-new Autavia Isograph collection taps into the modelâs aviation roots. It proves the collection is equally capable as a pilotâs watch as it is a racing chronograph.Youâll notice updates like the addition of a seconds hand and the traditional indices swapped out for Arabic numerals. More aviation-inspired features include a bi-directional 60-minute bezel, an oversized crown, and sword-shaped hands. A plethora of style options make up the seven references. You can choose from stainless steel or bronze and a blue, black, or grey dial as well as bracelet, leather, or NATO straps in a variety of colors. Finally, TAG Heuer expands its connected line with the Golf Edition. As the name suggests, the brand has optimized this model for the fairway.
Final Thoughts
Today, the watch industry is changing more rapidly than ever before. In a fast-paced world, watchmakers must keep the pace and keep up with the times to stay relevant and interesting. The annual Baselworld exhibition in Geneva presents a crucial moment at the start of each year. One for us to check in and get a sense of where the industry is heading. A Ruby Anniversary With Emeralds, Steel and Diamonds, Too
ROME â Lucia Silvestri carries a lot of responsibility on her slender, silk-clad shoulders.
At Bulgari, she is both chief gems buyer, shopping for the houseâs spectacular stones, and the jewelry creative director, overseeing the process of turning gems into stunning pieces.
And, at 62, she is celebrating her 40th anniversary with the jewelry house.
Ms. Silvestri followed her father into the company; he had worked closely with Giorgio Bulgari, son of the houseâs founder, on business matters. And she initially worked side by side with three Bulgari grandsons, Paolo, Nicola and Gianni â âmy mentors,â as she called them during a recent interview in her big, bright office at Bulgari headquarters on the banks of the Tiber in Rome.
In 2011, the Bulgaris sold the house to LVMH MoĂŤt Hennessy Louis Vuitton for 4.3 billion euros (now $4.75 billion). But Ms. Silvestri sees her job as âcarrying on the DNA of the family,â preserving and nurturing what Bulgari has done since its beginnings in 1884.
That starts with buying remarkable stones, and Ms. Silvestri is one of the few female gem buyers at this level, traveling the world from India to New York to find the best and the rarest. Nine of the 16 people reporting to her are on her gem-buying team. And, she added, she still practices a business lesson she learned from the Bulgari brothers: âDonât buy a gemstone until you know how you are going to use it.â
And, he added, he really likes working with her. âThe collaboration with Lucia is very informal, direct, friendly, joyful and balanced,â he wrote. âAlthough I am not a creative person myself, I love sharing my ideas, which I have to say are always welcomed with great openness by her and her team.â
Other jewelry experts agree. Judith Price, president of the National Jewelry Institute in the United States and an adjunct lecturer at Parsons Paris, said, âFine jewelry is not only her talent but her true passion.â
And, while Bulgari â like other high jewelry houses â refused to identify its gemstone suppliers, it did offer one dealerâs comment about Ms. Silvestri: âEvery time we show her a new gemstone, she has the excitement of a painter who has found the right colors for his canvas.â
Color is one of Bulgariâs signatures. It is known for a deep, rich palette, but Ms. Silvestri recently came up with plans for a necklace that she described as âthe shades of the sea: green, light blue and intense blue.â
Standing behind her office worktable on this particular day, she pressed loose tourmalines, aquamarines and emeralds onto a wax tablet, picking them up and then pressing them back into the wax surface until she was satisfied with the arrangement. Then the design and the gemstones would be sent to Bulgariâs high jewelry atelier on the outskirts of Rome to be transformed into a piece of jewelry.
She also looks for new materials and, in recent years, has produced pieces from wood, ceramic, steel, bronze, titanium and marble, all materials not normally associated with fine jewelry.
Ms. Silvestri tries on each and every piece from the high jewelry collections to be sure it feels right, and is as finely crafted on the back as on the front, so it is smooth against the skin. âAs a woman, I like jewels that are flexible, that arenât rigid,â she said.
And, after all these years, does she have a favorite Bulgari piece? She said there were too many to choose just one, listing Elizabeth Taylorâs sapphire sautoir, the Monete collection featuring ancient Roman coins, a necklace with a 24.46-carat Colombian emerald from the Cinemagia collection and the Flamingo necklace from the recent Wild Pop line.
This year, in celebration of her anniversary, Ms. Silvestri began bringing her gem table to events around the globe, including recent gatherings on Capri and in China, so Bulgariâs V.I.C.s â Very Important Clients â could select stones for custom pieces.
But even as the house continues to acknowledge its traditions â like the recent exhibition in Rome that showcased what Ms. Silvestri called Bulgariâs ârecognizable styleâ: the reptilian scales and snake heads of Serpenti, the coins of Monete, the flexible links of Tubogas â it has been working on smaller, lighter and less-expensive versions to capture the next generation of customers. The Serpenti snake, for example, now appears in hoop earrings and ear cuffs, while the Bulgari Bulgari line sells single ear studs, suitable for personalization.
The efforts appear to be paying off. While LVMH does not break out revenue by brand, the 2018 annual report praised the house for gaining market share, and noted that the new Fiorever jewelry collection, designed around a central diamond, was âexceptionally well received.â
It is a different company from the one Ms. Silvestriâs father knew. âWhen my father worked at Bulgari, there was only one store,â she said. And when she started, she said: âThere were three or four. Now there are 250.â
She does remember those early days fondly: âI used to go to Sunday dinners at the family villa outside Rome, since I was 6 or 7. It was all very elegant.â
While she worked at some part-time administrative jobs at Bulgari while studying biology in her late teens, Ms. Silvestri was not officially employed there until she was 22. But, she said, those initial jobs were pivotal: âI would wake up in the morning so happy thinking about gems.â
At the end of each work day, the Bulgari brothers would invite her into a room where tables were laden with jewels. âTheyâd say, âPlay with the stones, play with combinations, put smaller stones with gems.â So I put turquoise with rubies, amethyst with emeralds.â
They liked what they saw. âThey realized I had an aptitude for stones,â she said, and as more stores opened and they needed more inventory, they had her create combinations of precious and semiprecious stones. âThe brothers were interested only in the big stones,â she said.
She began traveling with them and, while she could make selections, âwhen I started to talk price, theyâ â the suppliers â âwould say, âWe want to talk with Mr. Bulgari, not you.ââ But she persevered, and soon was handling negotiations with what she considers her signature style: âIâm sweet but tough.â
She is proud to have flourished in what was a manâs world. âIâm a business woman, and Iâm a creative woman,â she said. âI can be an example for other women that you can be creative and a business woman in a manâs world.â
But some things never change, and one is the continuing inspiration of Rome, her hometown. Bulgari has long had a strong connection to its city. In 2016, for example, it financed a $1.7 million renovation of the Spanish Steps.
During the interview, Ms. Silvestri was wearing a Divaâs Dream necklace, whose scalloped motif was based on the tiles in the Baths of Caracalla. And she pointed to a sketch of a choker in rubellite and tourmaline rendered in a series of arches, like those of a bridge. The piece is called Ponte di Roma.
âRome is a very important part of me,â she said. âTo be here, to see the colors of the buildings, of nature, I take inspiration.â

Beware the Evil Eye. Or Buy One, Just for Kicks
âFrom the disease of conceit/Give ya delusions of grandeur/And a evil eye...â
â Bob Dylan, âDisease of Conceitâ(1989)
Search the phrase âevil eye jewelryâ on Etsy, the e-commerce website for handmade and vintage items, and more than 71,000 items appear. Itâs a staggering result, but not so surprising when you consider how many people, well, acknowledge the evil eye.
Throughout history, across cultures and religions around the world, people have feared the malevolent gaze of someone who envies anotherâs good fortune and wishes him harm.
Their defense? Charms like the evil-eye amulet, a bead or disc with a rendering of an eye â sometimes with a bright blue iris, sometimes with a black iris surrounded by circles of white and deep blue or aqua. Any visitor to the bazaars of Greece and Turkey or the shuks (covered markets) in Israel will be familiar with the myriad ways that those blue, white and black glass beads can be incorporated into necklaces, bracelets and other adornments.
So the allure goes way beyond high school backpack charms or something for Coachella.
In fact, when Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, was seen wearing an Alemdara evil-eye necklace and then a bracelet during her trip to Africa this fall â the latter (was it deliberate?) on the day when the public learned she had filed suit against a British newspaper for publishing a private letter â it became clear that the style had entered the fashion mainstream.
A Bit of History
The desire for protection against the evil eye is nothing new.
Amulets in the shape of idols with incised eyes made by the Mesopotamians were discovered during excavations in Syria and date to 3300 B.C. In âThe Evil Eye: The Origins and Practices of Superstitions,â written in 1895, Frederick Elworthy said, âIt is firmly believed by all ancients that some malignant influence darted from the eyes of envious or angry persons, and so infected the air as to penetrate and corrupt the bodies of both living creatures and inanimate objects.â (He also wrote of the ancient Egyptians and their use of the Eye of Osiris, one of their gods, in amulets to protect them against evil magic, both during life and in the afterlife.)
Belief in the evil eye is said to be strengthened among followers of Islam by verses 51 and 52 of the Al-Qalam Surah in the Quran: âAnd indeed, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes when they hear the message, and they say: Indeed, he is mad. But it is not except a reminder to the worlds.â
And the Old Testament of the Bible refers to the evil eye in Proverbs 23:6, cautioning, âEat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats.â
Glass beads appeared in the Mediterranean in about 1500 B.C., as glass production became more sophisticated, and evil-eye beads became popular among the Phoenicians, Assyrians, Greeks, Romans and Ottomans. Many historians have theorized that, as dark-eyed people were the norm in the region, those with blue eyes were considered most skilled at using the evil eye, likely leading to the prominent use of blue in protective amulets.
But the evil eye also appeared in both Celtic and Polish folklores. âThere is nothing more dreaded by the people, nor considered more deadly in its effects, than the Evil Eye,â Lady Jane Francesca Wilde (the playwrightâs mother) wrote in her 1887 book, âAncient Legends, Mystic Charms and Superstitions of Ireland.â
And Today
There is no way to quantify how many evil-eye amulets there are in world, but it is hard to dispute their popularity.
During Mariella Tandyâs first pregnancy, her Turkish mother-in-law gave her what she described as a âbeautiful, historicâ evil-eye bracelet. It became the inspiration for Alemdara, her fine jewelry e-commerce business, and its Didem bracelet, (275 pounds, or $355) is a reproduction.
âMy girlfriends all loved her bracelet and asked me to please get them one,â Ms. Tandy said. âI couldnât find anything but very cheaply made items, but my friends were still interested, so I thought Iâd create bracelets for them and the business grew from there.â
Her customers range from age 2 to 94. They include 20-somethings who buy the jewelry, made by skilled Turkish artisans, as bridesmaids gifts and older women who choose them for pregnant friends.
âTheyâre often given during a happy time in life for best wishes and good luck,â said Ms. Tandy, adding that once the duchess wore her jewelry, sales grew 25 times compared with the same period last year. âA lot is made of the negative aspect, but in my experience, it has always been a happiness thing and an insurance policy, just in case.â
In Africa, the duchessâs choices were a turquoise version of the Didem bracelet and the Altan necklace (ÂŁ450), which has both a small diamond pavĂŠ Hand of Hamsa and an evil-eye charm on an 18-karat gold chain.
In Toronto, Jessica Handelman, owner of the online fine jewelry site Jessica Jewellery, echoed the idea that evil-eye jewelry purchases from her line are increasingly fashion statements rather than responses to superstition. âEven a few years ago, the evil eye was more of a religious symbol that people wore for protection,â Ms. Handelman said. But âin the last two or three years, it has become more of a trend and a fashion statement than a meaningful symbol for a lot of my clientele.â
âI think it appeals to people because itâs unique and a pop of color,â she said. âThe designs these days vary a lot and there are so many different ways to present an evil eye: an eye, a circle, and with or without lashes.â
Most of the women who buy her evil-eye pieces are 20 to 35, said Ms. Handelman, who, in a nod to Jewish tradition, has pinned a blue bead to her infant daughterâs stroller for protection.
Even the Aga Khan Museum gift shop in Toronto sells both evil-eye jewelry and evil-eye objects for the home. Shoheb Gwaduri, the shopâs senior retail operations manager and product development specialist, said Western customers âwant the typical evil eye that doesnât cost much to put on their luggage or wear as a fun thing. People from the Eastern world want something more elaborate or intellectual that they can discreetly bring into their home.â
For instance, the shop carries limited edition jewelry by Nadia Dajani, who is of Palestinian descent, and her pieces always contain one turquoise bead symbolizing the evil eye. âPeople often ask if itâs a mistake,â Mr. Gwaduri said.
Tradition
Sabine Main, 46, a daughter of Lebanese emigrants to Canada, was given her first piece of evil-eye jewelry at her baptism. âIt was a tradition in my family that when a child was baptized, she was given a gold necklace with charms and one was the evil eye,â she said. âTheyâre keepsakes and Iâll pass it along to my niece one day.â
She views them as symbols of religious belief and considers herself too pragmatic to wear an evil eye. But Ms. Main bought her sister what she described as a âsuper-trendy necklace with an evil eyeâ as a Christmas present recently because, she said, her sister is much more attached to tradition.
âI donât truly believe an evil eye is going to protect me,â Ms Main said, âbut when I see one, it definitely tugs on my heartstrings because itâs part of the culture.â
Helen Lasthiotakis, 57, is the daughter of Greek immigrants. Although she always knocks on wood when she praises someone, she said she had never worn an evil-eye ornament until last summer when her daughter, a graduate student, gave her a bracelet: âMy daughter and I were each going through a rough patch, and she saw the bracelets on sale at the airport in Greece, so she got a couple and said we should each wear one.â
Ms. Lasthiotakis said she put the glass bead bracelet on her wrist and has not removed it.
âItâs not as if Iâm an avid believer,â she said, displaying the bracelet. âItâs not something I would have bought for myself, but itâs protection channeled through my daughterâs love.â
It is not only women of a certain age who have evil-eye jewelry in their collections. Rachel Frydman, 29, received an evil-eye bracelet as a gift from a friend. The Toronto social worker, a grandchild of Holocaust survivors, said she is not superstitious about the piece, âbut it is a very casual, noncommittal way to connect to Judaism and Jewish tradition.â
âI know that evil-eye jewelry is trendy and fashionable,â she said, âso Iâm not surprised to hear that the Duchess of Sussex wears it.â
